( www.TFLcar.com ) The refreshed 2020 Honda Civic Si is still great fun for under $30,000 to start, but it only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. That's a rare thing these days, so should you buy one now before the manual-only option goes away?

I had a 07 and have a 2013 now. While the HP numbers aren't much different, the torque numbers are where you notice it. Also going from the 2.0 liter to the 2.4 liter you can tell. The 2013 has enough power you can pass someone on the interstate without downshifting outta 6th (though it's not as fun).

Plain and simple, a car like the Si does not need a "Info-tainment" system. Also 99% of people hook their phone to the car, so it didn't fail based on normal use case scenario. The reason we need all these rediculous extra "safety" options in a car is because of unneeded things like Info-tainment systems that only cause more distracted drivers. If you need DVD/bluray players and flashing lights and large screen displays then you are not a driver, you are a passenger. The Si is a driver's car, not a movie theatre. It's meant to be a fun, "sporty" purpose built driver's/enthusiast's car. After getting T-boned by a 60 MPH car I will never own a coupe. Sedans are usually much safer, have more headroom, and are much more usable. The only thing that keeps me from buying a Si is that I prefer the hatchback, and Honda keeps failing in their decision to not offer it in the Si model.

If you have to ask yourself if you should buy the car because it’s manual you very likely shouldn’t buy it. Manual driving is a full time affair. You have to love it or leave it alone. If you’re a lackadaisical driver that can’t handle being aware at all times and things like using indicators is too much work just get auto.

Having bought a 2020 Civic Si recently I can honestly say its one of the most fun cars I've driven. And if you are thinking about buying one, do it. The torquey engine is more fun and usable to me then the previous high revving engines. Final drive gearing was revised for 2020 for better acceleration in all gears, the Si's 1.5L has forged rods and other upgrades in the engine you won't find with a regular civic (making it prime for upgrades and tuning), the transmission is amazing and shifts great. No understeer even with all season tires, this car actually produces an oversteer-like affect youd expect from a RWD car (when pushed at the limit). Interior is nice, android auto/Apple carplay works pretty flawlessly when phone is connected (unlike this video). I drove all the competition and none of them communicated through the tires and steering wheel the way this car did. If you're thinking about autox or track days this car should definitely be on the list.
Also you can push the button on the end of the left stalk to engage the right mirror camera instead of turning on the turn signal
Having a car with lane keep, adaptive cruise, automatic braking and etc with a manual transmission is the best of both worlds for me. I'm not a big automatic/dct fan so having all the safety with a manual trans was a big plus

Thanks for the well written review. My wife owns a 2018 Si Coupe, and I Own a 2013 Mustang GT. I get to drive both often, and they make for a great contrast. When I start thinking the Si is feeling kinda slow, I jump in the Mustang for a week. WHen I start feeling like the Mustang is too clumsy for traffic and corners, I switch back to the Si. (Having both cars available during lockdown has been fun). Both cars are very fun in different ways, but it is amazing to drive.
I think the value of the Civic Si is amazing for everything you get. And our 2018 doesn't have any of the electronics.
It is also amazingly easy to drive. I ended up teaching my wife how to drive a stick shift on the Si, and it's such a light little clutch that it's easy for a beginner to learn.

To be fair, saying "if I'm being honest", is more of a way of declaring you don't intend something as an insult.
Example. If your girlfriend/wife asks, "Honey do I look good in this dress?". With you then saying "if I'm being honest...I don't like it". The implication isn't that you were going to say no and lie, but that you want to give the unabashed truth without shaming/insulting her.

I know if I wanted a 95 era civic for 5 grand start to finish i could smoke a most v8 'gt' cars. I hopped out of my Fiesta ST and into a new SI to test drive, and was immediately disappointed. It may have five more horsepower, and only a couple of hundred pounds of extra weight, but all the excited puppy dog characteristics of the fiesta were gone. It just wasnt as fun, and 100% less communicative.
That being said for its price it is one hell of a nice car inside. The quality is better, Electronics are better, it's more comfortable and the seats are excellent.
It was tempting, and i work for Honda, which is a good company, but its just not go-karty, like my FiST.
Which might bite me in the ass one day since Ford's are not super reliable nowadays

Yours is actually not faster. I'm gonna tell you why. The gearing of the newest generation forces you to shift twice before reaching 60 mph. It also has a wee bit of rev hang. So though the 0-60 numbers are not that impressive, the actual torque, while in the gear's sweet spot, is. Cars that you will lose to 0-60, you will beat 0-70. RE: the "it's only on when doing a right turn" camera [or, you can turn it on/off using the button on the end of the stalk]: My 2016 Pilot has the same, and I really LIKE it. I don't need a camera on the left side of the car, as I can see what's there way easier -- I need it for seeing on the RIGHT side, as the view there is more "obstructed."
I also use the 3 "distance lines" on the camera to judge how far I am from cars on the right of me when I want to move over to the next lane on the freeway, or to make an upcoming exit lane. If cars are at or behind the 3rd line, I can move over without cutting them short...so they don't feel I'm driving "unfriendly" -- helps prevent Road Rage incidents. ;-)

Couple notes: having the car in sport mode makes the cabin louder and suspension firmer, which throws off your bump test and nose test. Second, you’ll get more headroom if you lower the driver seat by using the front adjustment lever (just push it down several times). And lastly, the si doesn’t have navigation so it wasn’t going to give you navigation instructions when you asked it.

  • @holdensagan

I love you, guys, but you really shouldn't do 0-60 tests that far above sea level(even with a disclaimer)and without explaining that the Si requires a second shift to achieve 60 mph. The time it takes to shift gives an unfair impression of the car's actual acceleration/torque and could actually lead to lesser sales. I think it's strange that Honda hasn't picked up on that when you consider the importance put on that 0-60 number.

  • @Ironfangzu
    @Ironfangzu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Just wondering. If you take a car capable of going 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, and you do a launch, and you do it in about NINE seconds, what does that tell me? It tells me you are a very poor driver who is barely able to manage a manual transmission. In other words, what are you doing giving us a review of this hot little performer when you can hardly drive? That's like a golfer with a 40 handicap giving me a review of Augusta. "Wow, this course is hard! This is the fifth time I've driven my tee shot into the woods and this is only the third hole!". Thanks but no thanks. I ended up getting the Type R and no regrets at all so far! It is strange, but so far it seems like SI holds its value better on used market for a 1-2 year old models then Type R which makes a used Type R a real bargain to consider.

Add a PRL CAI, PRL Downpipe and front pipe and get Ktuner on that. Waaaaayyy different car afterwards. You can easily hit 450WHP for about 6K in this car.
