      I played a Summoner with a demon Eidolon. I wanted to give the character some sort of "Snow White and Rose Red" flair, thus I had the Summoner be the "snow white" while the Eidolon looked like Succubus in order to be the "Rose Red".

      Yes. Dragon and fey. Because they feel so different and are both really cool. Dragon is going to be the up close fear causing martial style. While the fey is going to lean heavy into caster.

    4:20 I would almost call Summoner the reverse Witch. Instead of the character themselves being the combatant and the familiar being just the companion, now you got the character themselves being the companion and the Eidolon to be the actual combatant of the relationship. (And depending on your feats and spells, can go really deep into that and have only the Eidolon fight, while the PC is a pacifist and hides in combat. Or even heals as a divine caster

    To use D&D terms the classes from Secrets of magic are basically Gish classes, a blending of martial and magical power. Not really as magical as a full caster, but also not as martially powerful as a full martial class. But there's a huge amount of flexibility there. It's a very good class for enormous flexibility in odd ways. An Eidolon can do a lot of things a typical character can't out the gate. Furthermore with all the size shifting an Eidolon can do it means there's a lot of weird things you can do.
    A plant eidolon that can shrink down to tiny well melded with it's summoner can get into and out of places that very few people will expect. Especially if it suddenly if it grows to massive size and starts thrashing around. Not bad for a sunflower.

    What I like most about the summoner is how different they can be from each other. I have a Construct summoner who uses the Merge power to have a suit of power armor(hoping they give better options for a full synthesist build later), a Angel Summoner with Champion Archtype to be a front liner, and a friend of mine plays a Halfling Devotion phantom summoner to emulate the creepy twins from the Shining.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG

      That's a great character idea! (The Shining)

    • @jand.4737
      @jand.4737 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      same. I hope there will be archetypes to buff the Eidolon further. I once wanted to do something like what you did with the construct summoner (just not with a construct, but an Angel), but since the DM allowed for the free archetype optional rule I struggled on that part. Champion archetype would have been great ... if I could keep it during the merge, however I don't. The Eidolon has no access to my archetype feats. So, the highest heights you can get is a Draconic-Merge with the Elementalist archetype, thus having an elemental spell list going along with the dragon#s element. Then you take the evolution feats that grant your eidolon access to your spells.

  • @nicholasromero238

    I'm actually making a character concept that's an Aasimar Android (the soul powering her body is actually the spiritual essence from a slain celestial) who was an archivist, and her eidolon is going to be a construct eidolon so I can make it a giant Guardian Scroll that has a written record of all the knowledge she collected in her past life, and she actively inscribed it with the knowledge she gains during her adventures.
    Cool Flavor aside, I really like the two floating feats that can be reconfigured with a day of downtime. I tend to gather information before my adventures, so it lets me customize a bit beforehand to get the best tools for the job.

    Up front: Love your content, love the Summoner.
    Re: Two topics regarding the Devotion Phantom. On the topic of increased mental defenses for the Devotion Phantom, there seems to be a notion that spells with the Mental trait are mainly concerned with taking control of the target- for the most part, they inflict debuffs and penalties. Since the Summoner and the eidolon are both affected by the most severe version of any penalties the two of them take, avoiding these whenever possible is very important, especially if your eidolon is serving as a front-line fighter. As for the mind control thing, sure the Summoner could keep control of all three actions and deny them to the eidolon, but that does still deprive you of about half your tactical options.
    Less importantly, I believe the glowing blue spectral humanoid illustrated in the Summoner section is a Devotion Phantom, and the red one next to it is an Anger Phantom. Not huge, but that was my take on it.

    I am right in the middle of building a Kitsune Summoner with a Fox Fleet Beast Eidolon. After a bit of mental wrestling I decided to have the eidolon with both the spellcasting feats so that it gets one spell per level up to 7, and the character going for legendary summoner with effortless concentration and ostentatious arrival. So the summoner would mainly summon big stuff in a very sparkly way, and the eidolon will have a bunch of "battle form" spells and such, to be a real danger in combat. Pity I will never get to play this but it's a fun way to learn the rules as I need to read a lot of the manuals for the builds 😅

  • @Kain_Hywind

    The only advantage, I can see over the mental defense is for it you use merge feat with it. Since you can't take any actions while merged expect to dismiss it or unmerge with it. It will prevent that Eidolon attack your allies, or you having to waste a round unmerging from it and/or dismissing it.

    My favorite 3e class was the psionicist with the creation specialty. The main reason was the summon astral construct power. This seems somewhat similar, but not exactly the same as it seems it has to be sentient and really is its own creature, but being able to customize it is similar. The construct option seems the closest, got to say given how limited spell casting is its a hard sell though, 5 spells at level 20 is rough.

    When Secrets of Magic comes to Fantasy Grounds, I wonder if they will automate the outcome of simultaneous area damage to summoner and eidolon. In other words, if a fireball hits both the summoner and the eidolon, and the fireball hits summoner for 12 and eidolon for 16 hit points, only the higher damage of 16 points is subtracted from the shared health pool.

    For eidolons unarmed primary stike, Secrets of Magic pg 58 says that the damage dice is 1d8. Would you also add the Strength bonus to this damage roll as you would for any other character. So for example, the psychopomp has a strength of 18 that give +3 as a bonus; therefore resulting in a damage roll of 1d8+3. Is this correct :-) ?

    At 11:35, you say that you can upcast *any* spell you know, which is not true. You have to know the spell at a specific level to cast it at that level, and it is only the signature spells that you can upcast (and downcast as well) freely :o

      It is true, however, with all Summoner spells, because all Summoner spells are treated as Signature spells due to their Unlimited Signature Spells class feature. (By RAW it could even extend to "all" spells learned via archetypes but that's probably not intended)

    One comment regarding 10:19 : sharing saving throws isn't a general rule, meaning the multi-class archetype doesn't get that as far as I know. That and they also share languages with the summoner ("Your eidolon doesn't gain any additional languages based on its Intelligence modifier, but it can speak all the same languages you can."). So yeah, nothing major there but might be worth knowing.
    also, can someone point me to how one would manifest and then attack with the eidolon in one turn??? act together has the tandem trait, so it shouldn't work when summoning it right? ("You can't use a tandem action if either you or your eidolon can't act, if you haven't Manifested your Eidolon, or if you've...")

    I find having a spell repertoire of only 5 too limiting to play a summoner. It locks you out of using utility wands and scrolls to supplement your limited pool without having to rely on a RNG Trick Magic Item Check. I have to disagree with the 4 actions for Act Together. The specific examples show only a total of three actions being used, not 4. I cannot find anywhere in the summoner that explains Act Together giving a total of 4 actions. It reads more like splitting the three actions between Summoner and Eidolon.
    Please explain this better.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lightblckknight It is this text from Act Together: "Either you or your eidolon takes an action or activity using the same number of actions as Act Together, and the other takes a single action. "
      So if your eidolon spends 2 actions to do Act Together, you two get to do EVERYTHING stated under the ability. This includes 3 actions: the eidolon taking 2 actions, and the summoner taking 1 action. Then, after Act Together, there is your remaining shared 3rd action.
      I deliberately say "4 actions" early in the video as a shorthand to avoid having to get into the weeds while giving a glimpse into the class.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lightblckknight Two paragraphs before Act Together, it merely says that the summoner and eidolon "work together" and share 3 actions. This doesn't reference Act Together. Then the next paragraph says "You coordinate your actions more efficiently when you Act Together." As in, more efficiently than normal.
      Act Together is not merely restating how you "work together." It is its own self-contained action/activity. It uses a variable number of actions. Because Act Together says the summoner or their eidolon uses an "action or activity using the same number of actions as Act Together," AND says "the other takes a single action," Act Together effectively gives you +1 action. When you use the 2-action version, one of you does a 2-action activity, and the other uses 1 action. This cost only 2 actions, and there is 1 action remaining.
      Act Together is a self-contained action/activity. It can be the first thing the summoner+eidolon do on their turn, or the last thing. Even the middle thing, with 1 action preceding it and 1 action succeeding it.

    • @lightblckknight
      @lightblckknight 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again I say, i have to disagree with your assessment. “Coordinate your actions more efficiently” makes it sound like further explanation of how you use the three actions given as it does not come come across as a “self-contained action/activity.” You see it that way, but due to the rest of the context of everything around it, I don’t, and such context is important.
      Again: Unfortunately, this needs greater clarification from Paizo to be understood the way it is being run.

      Act Togehter can be used as a 3-action Action, and due to the wording of Act Together, the other one (summoner or Eidolon, depending on who did the 3-Action) still gets a single Action.
      If you would be able just to split your 3 actions each turn, Act Togehter with 3 actions wouldn't be possible, since the other NEEDS TO make a single action
