    Hi Pat, Just watched this with my dad, who fired steam trains on this line in the 1950's. He said they always went through this tunnel at speed. He calls the refuges the walls 'Man Holes'. Brought back some memories for him. Thanks.

    I worked on the Haddon Hall estate for a few months after I left school in 1985. Never knew about the tunnel. Great explore!

    Nice video Pat. Amazing tour of our history. I love the 'haunting' sound of the steam engines too! Those engineers really did a 'proper' job in those days and how hard it must have been. Thanks for posting mate and enjoy your attention to detail in your videos.

    Wow! What a great video! Adding the steam train sounds, was the perfect touch! So the owner didn't want to see a steam train go through his property!       Hi Kathryn the photos worked out better than I expected, it was pitch black in some areas and massive so a flash would not of provided enough light, very satisfying when you see the finished results, like anything you may take 6 photos and just one is the shot you were after.     Another great tunnel tour loved the lighting Technic for the pictures I got a sense of what it was like running a train through there. Shame so many of these tunnels are not used and left to rot. Keep them coming.

      Hi Paul first time I had tried the light painting, spent 6 hours in tunnel and took dozens of shots, then picked the best just trial and error until you get the amount of light right, thanks for comments all the best Pat

      Hi and thanks for watching, a lot of the still photos were taken by lightpainting giving very detailed shots even thought it was pitch black. The photo at 14.44 i took on a 60 sec exposure , I had to stay perfectly still and at the same time wave my torch about in front of me to light everything up and form myself as a silhouette.       David Howard Thanks David, started out mostly wild camping but like to vary the vidios, hence the exploring, great places to go in poor weather and a different but interesting type of photography. The light painting certainly provides some great photos, I amazed myself with the detail they provided, all the best Pat

    I recently subscribed to your channel and have been enjoying it very much. It's amazing these places you go exploring are accessible to the public. Here in the US there are No Trespassing signs everywhere. Also, I really admire the brickwork those men did so long ago. When I was younger I would admire the brick streets in my hometown and think how sad it is that so many beautiful brick streets have been paved over.

    I would re-install a railway line and have it running around the estate or at least some type of line. Then get hold of steam locomotive and so on. Great for tourists and visitors to get a ride and history lesson. Also talk about bragging rights, to have your own steam locomotive, railway line and real proper old tunnel to run the train through. Great video with great pictures.

    That was so interesting, thanks for posting Pat. I was in the New Forest at the weekend and discovered an old railway line. After a bit of research it was the Burley to Holmsley leg of the Castleman "Corkscrew"

    That was an excellent watch, Pat. Thank you for sharing. I have never seen the shafts from above.
    Always been interested in tunnel architecture and my Dad took me up to Haddon in 1970 and we walked in from the Bakewell end to shaft 5. I was scared to death!
    As I say, brilliant piece of work. Well done.

      Hi Ian once inside the tunnel it was the sheer size that got me, probably all that brickwork done by hand such a impressive piece of Victorian construction. the air shafts on the surface also interesting although a bit overgrown and forgotten in places, thanks for watching Pat

      Hi Mick must admit I had not seen it Julie, s railway walks. I always thought door was locked but looking at other explores it must of been open for well over 5 years. It did cross my mind what would I do if someone decided to lock it while I was in the tunnel but the door is strained and does not line up with the locking hasp so should be OK once in. Well worth a visit, all the best Pat

      Yes will deffo be giving this a visit somepoint very soon but will not get photo's anywhere as good as yours. Well done again and looking forward to more films its great to get away on the moors and I too am very lucky to be only 40mins from the Peak District. I was up on Winn Hill 2 weeks back and had the entire mountain to myself Fantastic !

      I think that program was further up the line and the tunnel was at Monsal Head. That tunnel is now fully open and certainly worth a look if you haven't already been.

      Hi the tunnel was massive inside and I new a flash would not light it up, I had read about light painting but never had opportunity to try it so this was the ideal location and yes the photos worked out better than I expected, thanks for watching Pat

    Excellent video. After watching it I also viewed "A Railway Walk, Rowsley to Haddon" and was surprised by how much the access/undergrowth seemed to have changed (plus by that point I knew what to expect at the end of the other vid). Your photographs were superb.

    The light painting technique takes me back to the mid 70's I was a photography student and we were taking pictures of the ABC cinema prior to it becoming a bingo hall - using the same technique but using commercial flash heads to paint with. some good photography there Patrick - ATB

    Pat your videos are very informative and done so well, I do filming of wildlife ( mainly reptiles ) out in Derbyshire so know what it takes to do it , the tree camping was astonishing and the patience needed was way beyond anything I've ever done , you truly are an inspiration cherrs John 😃

    Thanks for a fascinating video. Interesting background on the tunnel. Light painting technique fascinating. I have heard of plans to open the tunnel to extend the Monsal trail, with an eventual plan to make a full circular route. But like you say, we'll have to wait and see.

      @@patrickdickinson6492 you're much braver than me. I don't think I'd dare risk having a look. Hence why I subscribe to your channel. Love the way you film it all with you walking off in the tunnels. You must cover some distance having to go back to get the camera after each time. I appreciate the extra effort you go to. I've noticed a very deep shaft at Black Rock Cromford. Do you know if this is just a well, or does it lead somewhere ? Always been curious about it. Right next to a little ruin.

    I luckily got to walk through Catesby tunnel just before it was turned into an test centre for automobiles! An absolute behemoth! I wish it was still used for trains but am still glad it’s being turned into something and being used. Great vid mate 👍

      Hi Terry similar I had read about it but never tried it so I thought a big dark tunnel like Haddon would be a great place to try and very pleased with photos, will be trying it again in the future,all the best Pat

      You possibly saw the technique being used with off-camera flash being used as the light source for painting? I have no idea which would be better. The exposure and detail in your shots are superb though. Maybe a photo mag would use them? Cheers,

      Hi Tom If I drink in the daytime when the pubs are nice and quite get home early evening then I have a good 12 hours to recover, and don,t feel too bad. I find if I drink in evening then don,t feel so good next day. As I have got older, days are far too precious to waste due to drink, could be exploring or camping.       Rai Merry hi Rae like anything it's just experiment with settings and exposure times, for light painting, camera set to manual, ISO 100, Aperture F8, Focus to infinity or just slightly less and exposure time anywhere between 30 and 120 sec is a good starting point just go out experiment and enjoy it, all the best Pat

      Hi Roy, yes I have a lot of interests too many sometimes, although the channel was mainly wild camping I like to do different videos, sometimes with the camping, its walk,camp,cook etc and I like to try and have a different theme. thanks for watching all the best Pat
