what makes this even creepier is the fact that most people dont even touch their starter places. They might visit them once or twice but thats mainly it. when playing one of those starter place games i've always got that thought at the back of my mind that basically says "What if someone or the owner joined this game?".

I made mine 100% white and got a golden crown
I made mine a complete scary one I think so if they join they will be spooked
I wanted to check the dynamic heads and so i just joined my place. Felt just as anxiety inducing and alone as always and then my friend frickin join causing me a near heart attack

Heres a story:
Me and my friend group of at least 6 people (including me) always roleplay in *my* private servers, sometimes each other’s to let the friends of our friends engage.
One day me and a friend of mine (also in the friend group, but the others didn’t feel like they wanted to come) decided to go to my private server to roleplay, and as we set everything up, we started roleplaying. As time went on, the atmosphere of the server got more eerie and we felt like we were being stalked.
We were so unsettled we had to hop into a public server that contained only one person to ease that feeling. We decided to practice in private chat but we left after a few minutes. That experience has been living rent-free in my own head, and it was of a fairly popular game that was extremely famous in certain communities which averaged 2,000 players.
When I still prayed broke heaven (you know what I mean), I once somehow got in a completely empty server.
All these starter places are creepy. It was for me and its still. Its unsettling to be alone in these games. Yet no one will join...

Nobody will join it's empty nobody ever has joined but if someone does join? It would be so creepy if you were exploring a while and someone suddenly joined

I’m not lying but recently I was playing my starter place with nothing added into it, and I heard walking sounds when I was alone, the only player in the server.
Suburban is even creepier. It shows that people used to be there. There's even a full entire school and park.
I might make a followup looking at other starter place templates.

I might be the only person to actually geniunely play these. I remember years ago playing my friends starter game with her for like 2 hours and unlocking all the gears for the first time. Amazing. Underrated experience most players never have.

I remember back in 2018 i found out i had a game and played it. I really miss the 2016-2019 starter place update. In 2020-2021 and this year, yes it is the same starter place but they made it with realistic grass and a new atmosphere and it takes away the whole nostalgic vibe to me.
I have always found this map creepy, specially the old starter place, it felt wayyy more scarier than the modern one in my opionon.

Its the same as the loneliness of source. For example maps like rp_downtownV2 are made for multiplayer so when you take that multiplayer map which is full of artificial life and go singleplayer it gives a real creepy vibe

Probably another factor for this creepiness is that the starter place is made completely by the terrain tool,Roblox is known for their blocky aesthetic and seeing a place like this is almost surreal.
I never really thought of it that way. After all I don’t play it in single-player much. But it makes sense. Lots of horror potential that’s for sure.

It's because a majority of users on Roblox nowadays play from mobile, Roblox studio is sadly inaccessible from mobile devices

yeah it sucks, i play on mobile because my pc is broken and i want to do simple editing to my starter world but there is no studio app or anything its shame i think my phone can handle something like that

Spawning some npcs and letting them fight just cured my loliness
When playing construct i was always turning around expecting a jumpscare because it’s eerily silent. And one time even (i had some mods installed and they were conflicting so maybe it was because of that) I spawned combine soldiers, offed them, and then like 30 minutes later a grenade fell from the sky directly on me even though I removed every single one of them

I actually played my starter place a lot when I first joined roblox. I was just exploring the whole map and having fun. There's also something weird that had happened one time but I don't remember for sure
I was in my place and a random player just joined in, said some random stuff and left. I was really young at that time and I didn't know english, so can't really remember what they said. It was probably a bot but still kinda creepy thinking about this now

Around 2 months ago, I saw a sponsored starter place that was completely unedited. Username of the fresh account that was created the day it occurred was "734199remmer" and their avatar was a female acorn hair default avatar but with a UGC of Inside Out 2 Anxiety?? Also had premium and you can tell they sponsored it for quite a lot since there were around 6 full servers full of confused people just talking (with a few exploiters of course).
For some reason I just stayed there cause I was bored? Then some (attention seeker?) joined with the username of the owner but with "_alt" at the end claiming it was them.
Stated there was a note hard to reach at the bottom of the map that could be accessible by an invisible bridge we had to find, surprisingly a few people actually believed it and when people would ask questions, they would just tell em to join their starter place for more information.
note it was kind of late when this happened and no way was i joining that place, later the sponsor died out and no one was there anymore. it ran for a good 2 hours at least, it was kind of creepy because it felt like it was more than someone just testing a sponsor, anyways yap over

One creepy map was city before the modern city. Shows signs that other people were one time, there. Empty rooms, nobody there, it feels downright uncanny.

my first roblox game was a very poorly made cafe with npc's as customers. it was terribly eerie, because all the npc's behaved like... well, npc's. repeating the same lines over and over while walking into walls. it made me feel uncomfortable, especially since i was playing at night.
I remember playing hide n seek with my friends on the starter place. Fun times.
The creepiest part is how Roblox is removing some of their other places from Studio

There's a Roblox game called "India" , it's thumbnail/icon is Indian flag & discription is "I luv india so much" has actually used Starter place just upgraded it & made it INDIA BASED, it's pretty fun to explore & rp with friends (despite it's empty) there are some weird things tho like some creatures being so large

I remember being new to roblox and one of the first games I played was my own starter place. It was so unnerving and creepy to me and you described how I felt perfectly. The contrast between the place and my avatar is was a factor for me. My avatar was a silly block person, meanwhile the place was disturbingly realistic. Great video, can't wait to see more like it! :)
To be Honest... back in my very early days... I was in a map called Starter Place in Roblox Studios.. but... it just felt lonely... no one to play while your just alone in-game...
The feeling (maybe) wares off when you add an NPC... but your still alone... either being watched.. but no one's there, saw somebody in the corner of you eye.. but disappears.. and you realized that you were looking around too fast, and when you heard something in Roblox Studios you did not add... but in reality... it was the wind in real life...
These 3 feeling... i've experienced them before... it's actually scary.....

Ik this is way late but I’ve had several nightmares of being stuck in a roblox game. If I try to leave, nothing happens. It’s like a big house, I’m usually stuck in a bedroom with a bathroom. If I die to something I respawn somewhere else. I’m pretty sure I’ve had this dream twice

Imagine a larger version of the map, I mean, it's not just that piece of map, it's much bigger but still has the same effect, a good way to make it scarier is to put an NPC that appears and disappears randomly all over the map, and if you look at it it disappears quickly to make you wonder if you really saw that correctly

i was playing the starter game with a friend and there was a flying object and we freaked out because if you use the stopwatch the flying object turned purple.

The answer to your questions is simple: Some dude at roblox was asked to make a starter place that would help introduce new players to the game, and he decided to add some cool little easter eggs throughout and basically just messed around and made a cool map.

A place with this exact map called "Horrors Place" was a game that me and my friends played about 4 - 5 years ago. It was creepy because it had a sped up version of some 1990's music. And tbh it was fun because it had laser guns in. The music broke later on so i remade the game on my account :)
