  • How Indian Income Tax Payers get Squeezed from All Sides | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The latest budget provides underwhelming relief to the Indian Salaried class. Only about 2% of Indian citizens pay income tax, but this tax is expected to make up 19% of the government revenue. The salaried class also has to pay GST and now an even more in Capital Gains Taxes. What can Indian taxpayers do?

Here are some points to consider:
      Overpopulation:
Yes, India has a large population, but so does China. Despite its size, China has managed to become an economic powerhouse. This shows that overpopulation isn't an insurmountable barrier if the right policies and systems are in place.
      Freebies:
As a middle-class taxpayer, I have never benefited from any government freebies. In contrast, there are instances where large corporations and wealthy individuals receive significant benefits and bailouts from the government. For example, some businessmen have taken massive loans, defaulted, and then fled the country with little repercussion.
      Reservation:
While the reservation system has been essential for uplifting marginalized communities, there's a consensus that it needs reform. Wealthy individuals from reserved categories should not benefit from these policies, as it defeats the purpose of uplifting those who are genuinely disadvantaged.
      Tax Evasion:
Only 2% of the population paying taxes is a concerning statistic, but it's important to understand why. There are numerous loopholes in the system that the rich exploit to evade taxes. For instance, a person earning 20 LPA pays 30% in taxes, while a billionaire can show negligible tax liability by declaring their income through various channels like agriculture.
      Illiteracy:
Illiteracy remains a significant issue, but it's worth noting that keeping the population under-educated benefits certain political agendas. By diverting attention to divisive issues like religious conflicts and ignoring infrastructure problems, the government avoids accountability for critical issues like road conditions, pollution, railway accidents, and more.

@@SimhaArya-zu7vo90% of Indians are dailywage earners according to government report. So how the hell are you going to charge income tax on informal workers like Chaiwala and fruit seller ? 8% of population are middleclass ( salaried employees). Out of them only 4% falls in the income tax slab. 1% of population control 50% of national wealth but they have been given massive tax cuts in the form of corporate tax since 2019 and thanks to electoral bonds. Then why are you entitled BJP suppoirters trying to go after struggling middleclass families facing job cuts who are only employees earning a monthly salary in a company ? Increase the corporate tax. 0.04% of the richest 1% such as Ambani now control 30% of national wealth as per Oxfam report. its shocking that we, the middle-class are contributing more than corporations. Also, the LTCG rate hike is criminal. In 2004, STT (Securities Transaction Tax) was introduced and levied on purchase or sale of equity shares and LTCG tax was abolished from sale of equity shares. Later this government started levying LTCG tax on shares even though STT has been paid. And in this budget, they have increased STT as well as LTCG tax, which is absolutely CRIMINAL.
