  • How to keep flies off your livestock. The How to of cattle rubs. Keeps fly's off your livestock and keeps your cows happy. How to have your cattle put on more weight is as easy as keeping the biting fly's off your cattle. Research has shown that your cattle burn massive calories keeping the fly's off. Nice part is the cattle will do most the work keeping the flies off when you make a rub available to them.
I have heard some call cattle rubs, cattle rub ropes so you may hear some refer to them like that. Anytime you can fins a work saver around your small farmstead, or homestead you should take advantage of it. Put simply cattle rubs for fly control is a great way to go. Fly control for cattle is a must, if you want a healthy herd that puts on weight faster during the summer.

Very simple way to keep biting fly's off your cattle. Just follow the mixing instructions of Permethrin 10 ( I mix up 2 gal at a time ). You can use mineral oil, it works far better than water. Soak down the cattle rub after you have hung it in a high traffic area for your cattle. Once the cattle get use to it, you will see them go out of their way to walk under the rub. Then all you have to do it check it every few days to make sure it hasn't dried out. If it has just re-soak it down with more pesticide mix.

My Cattle loved to be sprayed with Permethrin...after about the 3rd time they seemed to understand what it is and allow me to spray their backs and sides when they're eating a little cake in the livestock tub. Don't need to run them into the corral or loading chute i stand on opposite side of the feeder tubs and have access to them all.. Very true...cattle settle down and are happier burning a lot less calories without all those blood sucking horn flies.
I have some nice Eastern cedar trees that go all the way to the ground and they love walking in-around them for scratching and bathing (removing flies). I hate nuisance cedar trees cause they take up to 35-foot circular diameter...lots of square feet of no forage with acidic needles...nothing grows under them...removed 80% of the cedars ( mined for log posts)...but kept 20% for their scratching and bathing needs. I left several dual cedars growing together...where there is a small 2 foot space/door between them...their walk-thru brush toy!

Yep, once they get sprayed a few times. It will work even in a stall, after the catch on they will let you spray one side, then turn so you can get the other side. LOL Hope you had a good weekend. ~ Rich

So, no water at all? So I'm clear: I should mix to the instructions on the label, but no water, just mineral oil. Is that correct?

Yes, for cattle you want to use mineral oil. Now I use the same stuff on the dogs but I will mix it about half water/ half oil. hope that helps. ~ Rich

About how much mineral oil does it usually take to do the initial saturation? Just wondering how many gallons I need to pick up. Thanks!
