    I respect Steve and Chet for their amazing dedication. I had the pleasure of visiting Ted Reed at his studio/drum shop in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg, Florida area. My drumming partner Russ Moy and I hung with Ted, who showed us lots of Billy Gladstone treasures. I even got to play some of his snares. I was also good friends with one of Billy's drum mechanics, Charles Cordes. Charlie showed me some of the things he received from Billy. Charlie was also an astounding inventor who invented the nylon brushes (the CC brush), the cymbal toppers, and the "free floating snare drum" for Pearl. If I had any last minute drum gear mechanical problems, Charlie would fix them for me, often at the last minute! He was really amazing. Charlie made a few very special snare drums for me. One had two separate "throw offs" (strainers) so I could switch from wire to "gut" snare beds or just have them both on for a really intense sound! I would visit Charlie and his wife Marge often at their home in Clark, NJ. Sadly. Charlie passed away in early 1996. I was at his funeral. He was very close to Billy. Billy even made a personalized, limited edition snare drum for Charlie. Anyway, I have Chet's book on Billy, and his Gretsch book. They are both tremendous publications. Steve and Chet are a joy to watch here.

    FYI Frank Ippolito's Drum Shop was also known as the Professional Percussion Center in NY. The previous owner bought the set there in 1981. I bought the set from him in 1992.

    Hi Steve, Did Arnie Lang make any arrangements for Lang Percussion to continue, or since his death that is the end of Lang Percussion?

    Steve described the Beimel set as having a 9 X 13 but Chet's book - the caption accompanying the picture of it - has it as a 9 X 14. A question...what about cymbal stands, hi hat stand and cymbal rods that Beimel used with the kit? Not being critical here, just curious. Sensational video.

    • @stevemaxwelldrums
      @stevemaxwelldrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      9x13. “14” is a book typo. Stands and pedals in the book were just display. The set is the 13/16/22/6x14 and the cymbal arms for the splash and ride.

    • @cfalzerano1
      @cfalzerano1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As Steve says, it is a typo unfortunately. When I got the set the cymbal arms were missing so I added WFL's as Gladstone seemed to like their tilters. No stands came with the kit but I added Premiers, the choice of Gladstone.

    • @cfalzerano1
      @cfalzerano1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you mean he photos from Radio City Music Hall...no that is his 3 way drum he teamed up with Gretsch to manufacture. This is a 2 way drum he assembled later.

      @@cfalzerano1 yes, after watching longer, it was explained.....My teacher Tommy Thomas owned a BG, snare drum Billy made for him, there were actually 2 drums , Ted Reed , I think had the first, a 5x15 which Tommy didn’t like, so Billy made him a deep , maybe 7 or 8 inch, I have some photos if your interested, send me your email, thank you......Michael Welch.....

    It’s a 4-ply Gretsch snare. Gladstone thought air holes were ugly. Just because a famous drummer played it doesn’t make it innovative. Why do they sound “incredible”? The wires ? Calf heads ? I’m asking because I don’t know, not to be a jerk. Any guitar Hendrix played is worthy of special consideration - but the video started by claiming Gladstone was an innovator. I’d love to learn what he did, but beautifying air holes and modifying wires….maybe?

    • @meekoloco
      @meekoloco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look on you tube and google for all you can find on Gladstone drums. Billy held over 20 patents for drum gear. The 3 way tuning system is at the top of the list. Brilliant.

    • @krusher74
      @krusher74 ปีที่แล้ว

      As calfskin heads are very susceptible to temperature change gladstone wanted a tuning system where you could tune the top and bottom head in a dark club without turning the drum upside down. If you really would "love to learn what he did," are you to lazy to google and read/watch?
