Why China's Shein is beating ASOS, H&M and Zara at fast fashion

  • Chinese e-commerce company Shein took the top spot as the most downloaded app in the United States in May, according to a report from intelligence firm Marketplace Pulse. The fashion giant outperformed TikTok and Instagram on the Apple App store and was far ahead of Amazon.
Since 2015, Shein has become a leader in its industry, initiating a new era of fashion experts call “real-time retail.”
“What Shein has done is, it has established a new norm, which is real time,” Allison Malmsten of Daxue Consulting told CNBC in an interview.
“It is very fast, and the products are updated much more frequently and at a higher volume than any other fast fashion brand.”
But its name has also been marred by trademark infringement allegations and questions about the sustainability of its manufacturing process - controversies some experts say could threaten the startup’s investment prospects.
“If it wants to IPO and if it wants to gather investments, then it really has to come clear and people really need to have peace of mind about what is happening at the company,” Malmsten said.
Watch the video above to learn more about Shein’s rise, successes and challenges.

If we are honest stores like Forever 21, Rue 21, and a lot of the time H&M too, all carry the same quality that Shein does for about 3x the Shein price. Everyone is using the same flimsy/delicate fabrics that fall apart after a handful of washes. That’s why Shein is winning against everyone else, they actually charge a reasonable price for the mediocre quality. Brands need to spend some of the money they spend in marketing on their raw materials and increase the quality to match the prices

I get that Shein is an incredibly problematic company, probably more than other fast fashion brands, but to a lot of us it is our best option. I'm not talking about tik tokers and other influencers who buy huge amounts of cheap clothes and shoot hauls (don't even get me started with influencers who wear a full Shein outfit and then pose in front of Chanel stores lol), I'm talking about people who don't have the financial freedom to buy clothing from brands that used to be considered affordable such as Zara and now are getting on the pricier side, while not even improving their quality. I have Shein clothes that have lasted me 4, 5 years so far, so I'd say the waste has a lot to do with the fact that trends now last shorter and people just easily throw them away. All in all, shop smart. Be it Shein or Zara, just buy what you need, which fabrics can last a relatively long time and what you see yourself wearing for the next years.

the idea behind ‘copying’ from luxury brands does sound lowkey stupid to middle class people who cannot afford such items but that shouldn’t lead us to the cheapest fast fashion store. copying from someone else or being influenced to do something particular isn’t bad at all. even shakespeare borrowed the key story line of most of his plays from previous playwrights but what made him different was that he didn’t just put out whatever for the sake of writing something. though his ideas weren’t original, there’s no denying that they were appealing and of quality. What is more is that even he wrote for middle class people who couldn’t afford the luxuries that upper class people were busy with such as politics. If you compare his work and the fashion today, there’s not much difference considering that luxury brands as well target celebrities and rich population only. Sure their work is ‘art’ and needs to be valued but they never bothered to cater to the masses and so they will never have the rights to complain against fast fashion which actually does work for the masses. However, like shein, most fast fashion brands exploit human rights and make terrible quality things. now obviously you can’t expect world’s best quality while you’re paying $3 but what people can do is thrift and buy a few fairly priced clothes from little boutiques that do care for what they produce instead of buying a multiples of $3 shirts which they’re not even gonna use to the full life. if shein or any fast fashion brand wants to be respected for their work, they must cater to all the factors. human exploitation should be stopped including ripping off people for lowest quality items like zara does.

I love Shein!!! Great quality, great cloths! Nobody complains about Forever 21 or other fast fashion companies. That is because they charge more! Shein got rid of the middle man!!!!!! I say YES!!!!!!!! You get a lot for your money!!!!!!!!!!!!

As much as I try not to buy when I don't need it - SHEIN's quality sometimes are far better than zara or hm... I used to be an avid loyalist of Zara a few years back - then I started noticing the decline in quality, fabric, stitching... Then I discovered shein before it became such a boom like it is now, compared their shirts and dresses to some Zara purchases, and made me so turned off about purchasing items from Zara.. Over priced, cheap quality and cheap fabrics they use.. Just now hoping Shein would be more sustainable by using less new production of textiles.

I don't like shein's ultra fast fashion or possible child labor. But because ZARA/Inditex isnt any better on their labor sourcing, Imt ok with SheIn either hurting Zara or forcing them to improve, both pricing and labor problems.

Idk, if you go into Zara stores, it's definitely better than what Shein puts out there

Same. I noticed that too but with a big name brand.

For a while I refused to purchase from Shein, however it’s frustrating that you walk into a store and do not have what you are looking for or it’s out of season. Availability, price, convenience is what makes you shop at Shein

Since Shein is a Chinese brand, westerns gonna start hating it. NB: Nobody can stop an idea whose time has come. ❤🇨🇳❤🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳❤🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳❤🙏

People are making a huge sacrifice though. The quality is horrible. Seriously some of this close can only be worn once or twice

Clothing made for IG crowd clearly. To be seen in the same garment more than once?!?! ☠️ Want quality? Stop following fashion. What's beautiful last season should still be beautiful for years to come. Fashion is planned obsolescence. Even the quality stuff.

9:03 Shein did not IMMEDIATELY respond to... I'm sorry but is CNBC some sort of a Government department? Why every company on earth must respond to them IMMEDIATELY?

SHEIN don't need to respond to them, theyr just trying to make an issue.

Journalists and reporters ask for a response when they run a story
It's very common practice to say that they gave them a chance to respond and they refused it's not a big deal or something shady

@@no.reply_ I think they intentionally do damage to these companies' image by making the public feel like these companies have something to hide.
It's not that people usually asked CNBC if they got an immediate response from the companies they wrote an E-mail to or not.
They might call themselves media, but the fact is they're nothing but a blackmail organization. Don't want your company to look bad? Then how about becoming our sponsors...

It’s my go to place. Zara don’t carry anything for my body type. Fashion nova takes too long to come and I’m in Canada. Shien comes in a week and my stuff is actually nice.

I never buy from Shein yet but very tempted because they have one of very trendy clothing I saw from social media that I can’t find in any brand in my country. The only thing holding me back is the possibility that it’s a ripoff from small designer. But it’s very tempting…

Yeah, they have a lot of trendy stuff. Every time I looked at their inventory, I found like a few hundred things that I wanted.

Obviously. They have stores you can check if stiches are even or if the clothes do not smell like coins (it is a sign they used heavy metals like cadmium, lead or nickel. The first two are very dangerous. Buying from Shein is like gambling you never know if you get what you want or if the item you bought will arrive.
