That was my biggest take-away from this scene. Hiding behind a three-letter acronym and charging 100x more for an item is usually something only the military would do. (i.e. iDS = Impact Delivery System = hammer).
Hospitals mark up their prices this way because they know insurance companies will always argue that price and knock it down. One of the many problems is that, like in the episode, there are a lot of things that aren't covered by insurance which leaves the lay person to have to argue with the hospital about the prices while potentially being sick. I am not justifying this system, just simply explaining it.

US hospitals have to charge a lot for nonsense because there are so many poor and homeless and illegal immigrants that have to be treated -- by law, they cannot be turned away - so the hospital has to treat them for free -- so the hospital charges everyone else high prices to make up for it

@@lorblauh the reference to inane hospital billing is entirely accurate. If you’ve ever been hospitalized in the US, then you’d know how hospitals bill for every little thing you can imagine at high costs in the hopes that insurance companies will cough up the money. That’s why itemized billing requests are important and unfortunately people end up having to do their own research to avoid being scammed by the very people and systems that are supposed to keep them healthy.
