I lived in Cooper Landing & guided fishing on the upper Kenia in the mid to late 80's. I wish we would have had the spey technics then that we do today. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!
Lovely film. For me, spey is all the things you mentioned but also it is the contrast between the sheer elegance and grace of the technique with the adrenalin charged tug of the take. Nothing else compares.
3 years later and I'm still dreaming of the time I spent with David fishing in Alaska, even more these days as I'm stuck at home and not able to go anywhere! I can't wait to meet up with you again and do some spey casting David!
When I first thought about starting to angle on the fly, the first thing that turned me down is how complicated it seemed, so many ways to fish, so many flies to know about, and not to mention all the different gear and weights you had to know about. The idea of making fly fishing "Simple", makes it far less intimidating for new anglers to enter this world. I have now entered what I know will be a life long journey, and I am loving every minute of it.
On a recent trip to Alaska, Dave got me hooked on fly fishing. it was my first time fly fishing and Dave helped me out a lot. And we caught plenty of fish :)
So good! Great job on this video from the story, to the shots to the editing. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to fish with you next time I'm back in AK. until then, I'll keep following you on the tubes. Thx
Great well done video with perfect music! Would love to fish AK this way. I also recently transitioned to fresh water trout spey due to low steelhead and salmon returns. My trout spey is on Western rivers using 4wt and 5wt switch rods. Definitely would love to fish AK rivers for trout with my 7wt and 8wt taken out of the closet....
@@johnparrish336 Thank you John! I really appreciate the kind words and thank you again for checking them out! Hopefully you can make it up here for sure!
Just got into spey fishing for trout last winter. Favorite setup is three nymphs under an indicator drifting down current. Haven't got into "swinging" soft hackles or streamers yet and frankly my casting leaves a lot to be desired. Nice film and hope to fish Alaska (again) someday. Peace.
Dave...Always had my eye on Speyco reels, but, living in Montana, never had one in hand. Watching your video, (my compliments on those BTW, well done), I picked up on your reel, which, started the Speyco curiosity thing. Once I saw your confirmation the fact that your fishing the waters you do what 150/200+ days a year, says something about the reel. I just got off about an hour long conversation with Tim...mentioned you and he beamed right on that...said you were a very meticulous gentleman about your equipment. Bottom line, I ordered a 3.5 Hard Black III Snake Roll w/an extra spool. Never been to Alaska, that's going to change one day, and when it does I think I'll require your services. Best Regards...S~
@@scottleete142 I'm super glad you have a new SpeyCo reel on the way! You'll really love it for sure! @@CooperLandingFishingGuide I went to your web page and see your from upstate New York...I live in Rome! Must be the draw of similar flies, everyone you tie I like
May I ask what rivers are these? .. I live in the desert (las vegas) but love to swing flies with a two handed rods. And since steelhead are literally gone in the rivers I fish on fall. This may be a great alternative!
I live near Lake Michigan. All the people I know that fish for salmon on Lake Michigan say I can’t catch them by fly fishing. I want to prove them wrong. I started fly tying as well, making intruders and game changers. What size spey rod should I use to catch salmon on Lake Michigan?
You can definitely get them! I'm rooting for you! The size of the rod would depend on how big the water you're fishing is. If it's on a lake, you can go as big as 13-15 ft 8 or 9 wts, but if it is on a river, you'd want a full spey rod (at least 13 ft, probably 8 0r 9 wt). If it is on a smaller tributary, you could get away with a switch rod or small spey rod (11-12'6" 8 or 9 wt). I hope this helps!
@@CooperLandingFishingGuide The biggest single hand fly rod I have is a 10FT 8WT. Biggest two hander is only a trout spey 11.4FT 3WT. Guess I better save up for a bigger rod! HAHA!
Thats a great question! It looked like he was getting ready to for sure. Aside from being a colored-up deep-dwelling old river bow- he appeared to show signs that he was starting the process. After that one, we moved on to swifter and deeper water looking for the lake rainbows and dollies that were moving in.
Hey Andrew! Thank you for watching! I go back and forth on this a lot. For us, all of our fish are wild and we want to handle them as little as we can with as much care as we can. Plus, lots of the folks we fish with are brand new to fishing and have never held a fish, so the priority is on the health of the fish. I hope that makes sense. We do ler lots of folks who are comfortable, hold their fish.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out our first attempt at a short film about Trout Spey Fishing!
Loving the B roll!
