    I know Simon. He has enthusiasm for the things he does that is rarely seen. You can see that in his expressions at various stages of the video (1:47 for example). I dont fish. But last year Simon set me and my Bro-in-law from Cali up, to go out on the Tongarero with one of his colleagues. We didnt catch a fish but we had an amazing time - you really cant beat getting out on the river. Love the video bro, hopefully there is more to come.

    I really like the OPST lines, but every time I see someone casting off the wrong shoulder I want to shout at the screen, "Learn to cast properly with both hands!"

    • @simonhoole981
      @simonhoole981 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha, absolutely know what you're saying, but I am a big fan of off-shoulder casting, just always enjoyed it 😂 I'm fine casting with switched hands, but hate the feel of managing the line and stripping without switching back. Each to their own I guess! 😉
      Tight lines!

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty new to this and have had only a day or two on the river. What's the benefit of switching hands to cast off the other shoulder vs. casting off the wrong shoulder? I have tried both but I am still very uncoordinated either way 😆

    • @kinlochtrout
      @kinlochtrout 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I cast off my opposite shoulder when the needs of river flow and wind and I use two hands. I'm interested in what you mean " Learn to cast properly with both hands". I'm in my mid 70's and have been doing this for quite a long time. I consider the art and technique of being able to cast 'off hand' is a real bonus at times. Maybe you should explain yourself a little and tell something about yourself to give some creds to your comment, I'm sure people would like to know this.

      No.

      @gregwood4653 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Barrie Barnes instead of casting with your right hand on top, reverse hands so the left hand is on top and right on the bottom. Cast on the other side of your body, ie reversed, so that it is a normal cast but left sided. By the way I don’t do this.

    Great video, just found it. I was told to go on the heavy end, or a little over of the line spectrum for beginners. Do you agree?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, glad you enjoyed it. For normal floating fly lines going a line weight over can make it easier when you start out for sure. However I wouldn't recommend it for skagit lines like these for spey casting. The lines are very different. The manufacturers like OPST have a line chart and that's the best way to choose a line to match your rod for these lines. Hope that helps. Tight lines

    Re my previous comment about music, strange , when I listened on my tablet the music volume drowned out the talk,now on my laptop the balance is better,however I dont understand why any broadcast needs music whilst someone is talking.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting to hear how different devices handle the music. I edit with headphones and find I used to make things too soft so when I was watching on my phone I couldn't hear, even at full volume. Now I edit based on the audio levels given on the software I use. The music is more to compliment the footage rather than the talking as it goes well with it, but it should not be drowning out the talking. I will try to mix it better next time. Thanks again for taking the time to reply and give feedback.

    Thanks Simon. Great video. Fished a streamer for a short time on my local river this week. No action but am going back for more. Found casting a bead head maribou difficult with a wf6wt and tapered leader. Would a skagit head help?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon is great isn't he? I'll let him comment on this in detail but from what I saw on this trip, that is what these lines do best.

    • @simonhoole981
      @simonhoole981 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Keith, cheers, glad you got something out of it! A Skagit head would definitely help turn those flies over. Flick me an email on simon@opst.co.nz if you'd like some line advice or ideas. Tight lines and good luck on your next outing!

  • @williamghost1516

    So a novice question here, having never tried skagit or spey... what's the differences, besides the line, between this and normal fly fishing with a sinking line or a sinking tip and swinging a fly?... I can put a heavy fly on and a sinking tip and do a roll cast which sort of seems to be similar...

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a great deal of difference but the short taper and thin running line with sink tip of the skagit lines is designed to cast pretty big streamers easily with little or no room behind you and swing them deep and slow. The spey casts are very similar to a roll cast as well but just work very effectively with these lines. A friend of mine uses a normal floating line and sink tip casting overhead or roll casting with streamers. It works well too but it's a bit of different style more focused on a retrieve rather than a swing, hitting very specific spots in the river. While the skagit lines can be overhead cast as well I find it a bit clunky. They do work well on both single handed and double handed setups though. There are a few other videos on my channel about this as well. This video (th-cam.com/video/K97BIuVT9B0/w-d-xo.html) covers the basics of trout spey while this one (th-cam.com/video/GB66R-frH54/w-d-xo.html) shows my friend Angel with his streamer setup toward the end getting 3 solid fish and this one (th-cam.com/video/zo8sbZzkWok/w-d-xo.html) has both of us fishing streamers in different ways toward the end . Hope you find that useful. I will be doing another video with Simon soon going into more detail about trout spey. Let me know if you have more questions you would us to cover.
