I never noticed that Anya was holding her stomach. Or hiding her stomach; from Jimmy. Two months after the crash. The implications are multifaceted, unsettling and wonderful. Thank you for the insight.
It’s such a good game like the little details!!!
The fact that a psychologist can immediately notice everyone’s behavior and be wary of jimmy from the start while it takes other players like half the game just shows how incredibly well written these characters are. It’s fascinating how hard it is to spot manipulation/abuse when you don’t deal with it yourself (or as a job). Taking the pov of the villain and the unreliable narration that comes with that really keeps most people off Jimmys scent (until it’s practically spelled out for you) SO MUCH SO that some people even suspect Swansea of assaulting Anya, since he’s the biggest jimmy hater out there, which obviously goes against jimmy’s interests, and, by extension, the player’s. The fact that you sussed out everything right from the start is really impressive.
@zoeschmitt1624 I KNOW RIGHT
It was a breath of fresh air to hear him immediately take notice of the door lock comment from Anya because streamers/let's players immediately assume it's just Anya making light convo at night with a fellow insomniac. They don't take into account that 1. It's a conversation topic 100% out of the blue and tinged with a heavy layer of casualness that's meant to say like, "Hey, we both think it's weird right, let's talk about it" and 2. _She's talking to her boss,_ an authority figure that should take her comments seriously
First time watching this channel, the way you immediately picked ip on how there was something off about Jimmy and on how Anya felt frightened around him was very impressive, my heart dropped when you mentioned how she covers her stomach
Another detail I hadn't noticed until someone pointed it out was that Anya sleeps right next to the pony mascot, the thing with movement sensors that makes loud noises when approached. It was broken by the time she locks herself in the infirmary
Hey Well, come on in! Appreciate you stopping by and checking out the channel especially as I’m starting to do a lot more video game play through. I have to say, though this game is layered in meaning and depth and I don’t even think I got everything you know, but I am so excited to have this community here that helps me out and understanding the layers that I didn’t even see
@19:58 OMG, I never thought of Anya purposely hurting herself so she'd have a legit reason to be in the medbay so she'd be able to lock herself in.😢
Also it has been confirmed by the creators than it’s Jimmy who broke the mascot
2:00:35 I feel like Curly starts laughing here because he was realizing in hindsight how much he tried to stand up for Jimmy and how right Anya was about him in the end. The crew all died either indirectly or directly due to Jimmy's actions and incompetence but only Anya saw him for the monster he was until THAT moment. Curly was laughing because at long last he saw Jimmy as the monster he truly was.
This is beautifully written. Yesss! That adds so much to the scene
@@psyculturists I also think it's because of the Gun. Anya told Curly before the crash that she hid the Gun so he didn't get it (Jimmy). In my opinion one of the reasons Anya commited self death is that she didn't want to give Jimmy the Chance to get the gun. So when Jimmy opened the case with it in it directly before Curly, he begann to laugh, what else was he supposed to do now after all he saw Anyas sacrifice so seaing Jimmy with the Gun Anya did so much to prevent him from getting the despair must've been immense.
@@Souru_TV i think even adding to it, it's curly's ultimate realization that if he had actually listened to anya and acted instead of standing by, aka giving her the gun, this entire situation may not have played out. they could've stopped jimmy from doing more harm.
@kiwiparfaits I can see that
The way you clocked everything immediately
Honestly, as I was playing through the game, I was even starting to doubt myself as to whether or not I was getting things right but the ending just solidified everything. It is an experience altogether and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it.
Yeah the man is clearly a pro, if not in psychology certainly in media literacy.
A little detail I love is during the no turning back section, Jimmy is finally facing responsibility, but still running away from it
Which is so in character for him, the childlike ignoring of what people mean by facing responsibility, so he can convince himself he did and absolve himself of guilt
one thing that can get overlooked with mouthwashing imo is its sound design which is phenomenal. a little over a year ago, i had a major surgery, the first one in my life, and i've just gotta say the direction and voice acting for the captain is horrifyingly real. it took me back to right after surgery, where i was literally hyperventilating and sobbing in pain for hours. it's disturbing to hear, that's literally how i sounded. and seeing how jimmy treats him is sickening.
2:02:03 I’m so glad you said this. I’ve seen so many people defend Curly’s inaction here, but he is the captain at the end of the day, which puts him in a position of power over the rest of the crew. He has the power to do something to help Anya, but he can’t get past his emotions towards Jimmy. I think Anya telling Curly “I told you” is also worth mentioning. It’s a contentious line within fan discussions, but I choose to take it literally. My interpretation: Anya told him about the assault at some point prior to the scene in the cockpit, and Curly still tried to play the middle man for Jimmy’s sake. According to the writer, he plays the role of the enabler in this story.
I’m impressed with how quickly you picked up on Jimmy being horrible. He’s such a well-written portrayal of a realistically horrible person that every interaction he has, no matter how seemingly mundane, is draped in red flags. The way he tries to seek control anywhere he can, wants to “fix” things himself for his own ego, then the way he tries to run from his guilt, but seemingly has no remorse for what he did to Anya, and the only thing he’ll accept fault for is what happened with Curly. Even then, he still didn’t take full responsibility for what happened with Curly, opting to instead end his own life and the thoughts that haunt him. Man I’m still thinking about this game after a while.
I loved how much you observed Anya’s body language and the weird tone when it came to everything about Jimmy. This play through was very refreshing, thank you
Ahhh thank you for watching!! Glad you enjoyed it it!❤️
2:37:12 it’s definitely on brand for jimmy if he f*ck up again by not knowing or forgetting to turn on the cryogenic chamber lmao
BRO I NEVER EVEN REALIZED AT 2:06:31 EVERYONE'S PLATES HAD CURLY'S LEG AND AT 2:34:56 JIMMY'S PLATE IS EMPTY (vomits in mouth)
just a guess, but i wonder if those who didn't put the story pieces together were those who went into the game expecting a normal horror indie without any depth. when the real horror of mouthwashing is the realness of the situation and the characters. cause you really have to either not be paying attention or lack media literacy skills to miss what's pretty in-your-face.
@@kiwiparfaits people often dont want to confront complex characters like jimmy. because the game rarely ever explicitly tells you something, you have to make a lot of assumptions(although most are very obvious) you have to face the reality on your own
I would love to see this guy playing OMORI
OMGG OMORI YES
literally had the same thought
I think its interesting that at the end when Jimmy is talking to Polle, Polle has Anya's text color. There's a hallucination sequence with everyone(even the unborn fetus) except for Anya. I think Polle represents the responsibility Jimmy refuses to take as it follows him around after he crashes the ship, during the disinfectant for Daisuke retrieval, and during the hallucinations, yet all the minigames are about running from it
@@jojojajahelp1762 mind blown right now 🤯 Holy wowww didn't put that Polle had Anyas color woahhh
I really love the symbolic use of the characters’ ID cards in the game altogether, but especially in this section. Anya’s card is still technically there, but her face is always being covered by Jimmy’s ID. Curly’s card actually gets that exact same treatment as well. When both of their cards are being covered by the same card, Anya’s card slightly goes over Curly’s, with jimmy’s still covering both of their faces. Another detail in this part is that Curly’s card doesn’t have his name on it (and yes, I know it’s his card because everything else on it still lines up with the one with his name).
The big posters on the wall in the lounge room offer some more insight into the working environment Pony Express played a role in creating on the Tulpar. They note that medical expenses and late deliveries will be docked from personal credits. “HR complaints about poor team synergy may result in collective punishment.” So that could be a massive contributor to inaction (but not an excuse). It is probably also why Anya told Curly about her assault in a more indirect way during the dead pixel scene 2 days before the crash, as well as why Curly was so obsessed with keeping things off the record. And another important thing to note is on the Rise and Shine! poster: “Do not indulge in over 5 hours of rest, including leisure time. Sleeping over the allowed budget will result in disciplinary actions.” On the cargo door code label it is genuinely stated that damage sustained to cargo, unnecessary trespass into hold, accidental door breach, and loss of code scanner will all be deducted from crew pay. Not to mention the tonic with quinine in it and the only water that’s safe to ingest being from those packets. So, yeah, the work environment wasn’t too great.
Curly as a character (especially in relation to Jimmy) just hurts my soul. Things like the 3-part qna on steam and his appearance in How Fish is Made only made it worse. The parallels between him (both pre- and post-crash) and Anya are so good, too. I personally interpreted his behaviors pre-crash as the result of a lot of things, like learning earlier that week that you and your crew are all losing your jobs after this, probably thinking your crew doesn’t like you anymore, learning that your long-time friend who is (extremely manipulative and at least a bit emotionally abusive towards you, and has been for longer than he’s been working with you) probably the only constant in your life is a rapist, having to make sure everyone’s pay doesn’t get docked, not being allowed to sleep longer than 5 hours in addition to being an insomniac, all while you are already in a bad mental state. I really thought that he was trying to help Anya but ultimately failed because his own stress and fear was used against himself. It is just my interpretation, tho! :D
Good stuff woaaaahhh!!!
THIS IS ALL MY INTERPRETATION!! (apologies for ranting, i could talk about mouthwashing for days)
1:54:08 Curly and Jimmy had been close friends even before they joined the Pony Express. They were long-time friends, and Curly almost didn't want to believe that Jimmy had done what he did. Curly was used to "looking at the bigger picture", and one small dead pixel in a large picture meant little to him. The sentence, "I can fix this" or "we could have fixed this" appears a lot, and it's not surprising given Jimmy's savior complex. He wanted to be as good as Curly, he was jealous of his success, tired of hearing how good of a pilot and leader he was, "You've reached the highest rung on this ladder, while I'm still climbing" (or smth along those lines). Along with the guilt of Anya holding his child due to his selfishness, he crashed the ship because it would all be on Curly's record, and if they never made it back to earth, he wouldn't have to face his consequences or "take responsibility." Curly never knew Jimmy would crash the ship or take such drastic measures just to avoid owning up to his actions.
2:00:31 Mostly speculation on my part- but I think the laugh is the moment where Curly finally fully understands that Jimmy is a monster. When he 100% understands how Anya felt when he failed her. When Anya initially takes the gun and tells Curly what Jimmy did to her, he dismisses her concern that Jimmy could be dangerous- “I’ll talk to him” “I’ve known him a long time-“ “We can fix this.” For 5 months Curly had been in unbearable pain, unable to move or speak, and is left alone while Jimmy forces things down his throat and essentially assaults him. He was in the room and probably watched as Anya died. Anya, the person he was supposed to protect, his responsibility. In her final moments he can’t even do or say anything to comfort her. And the next time he sees Jimmy, his friend, the person he made excuses for, who he defended, who he believed couldn’t be a complete monster? The next time he sees him, Jimmy coldly steps over Anya’s corpse without a care and takes the emergency gun. It felt like a “She was right. She was right all along.” kind of laugh. Now that Curly understands Anya fully, he'll "go bonkers" looking back at the times he ignored the dead pixel.
P.S i fully believe that Swansea was saving that pod for Daisuke, not himself. He saw his kids in Daisuke, and since he knew only one of the crew could have a better chance at going back to earth, he wanted to give that chance to Daisuke. + fun fact: Swansea was based off of actual swans, and swans kill their babies when they're in misery to give them mercy.
Really good interpretation and I see that a majority of the community so far has been pointing toward something similar. Awesome to see what a great game!!
on the point of them having known each other for a long time: wrong organ used another project, "the last one and then another" (spoilers below!), to promote mouthwashing.
post-crash curly appears a few times and has a couple paragraphs of dialogue; the first is sort of describing how he ended up being a captain in the first place (with the context that he's been doing this for at least 10 years, which is just nice to know), the second is a morbid joke about a corporate worker celebrating being injured, and the third seems to be him describing how jimmy ended up on the tulpar, and how his genuine belief that jimmy could be better ended up leading to this disaster:
"...you know. he joined because of me. what were the words i used? ah, right. “it’s a great opportunity. easy money, just a trip or two.” someone else’s words in my mouth. hey, worked on me as well, right? change hurts, but worse things fester for a long time. i told him as much. i tried, i really did. we’re defined by our past, but not slaves to it. we said tomorrow will be different. today would be the last day. the last one. the last one and then another. and another, and another, and another…"
so yeah, i think it's safe to say he and jimmy were good friends beforehand. this information doesn't really change much at all, it's just interesting hearing it from curly's perspective when he spends so much of the game silenced by the crash (and, indirectly, by his own inaction towards jimmy).
2:34:24 even Polle says "you SERIOUSLY aren't going to apologize to Anya?"
When dead Anya hallucination talks at the table, I have a feeling that Jimmy hears it with a sing song swoon sound. Which sounds f*cked up, but tracks in my head.
😭😭😭🔥
I couldn’t be the only one who noticed Lustercandy roleplaying as if they were new to the game at first to keep the thoughts on track lol.
It was a comfortable level of backseating, _that's_ how you do it without spoiling
I hope more Psychologists play this game. I love seeing how both the context and the subtext of the characters and setting get deconstructed.
Pls play "the beginner's guide" next. I desperately need a psychologist analysis of that game.
100% agreed. Absolute gem of a game.
Omg I was about to make this comment, yeesss please you have to play the beginners guide
I’m definitely interested if so!
Can confirm that the interest is there!
Splendid suggestion! I hope he plays it next. One of my favorite playthroughs.
i have watched over 20 other youtubers play this game, and only one of them caught on what's going on at the "lock" mention, the rest realizing it way later or not at all
you're the first person i've watched to catch on to what's going on so quick, im really impressed, loved watching your playthrough
there's a lot to think on and digest leaving this game. many others have said it before me and way better than i could, but I'll leave you with this: the last chunk of the game consists of Jimmy's "guilt hallucinations" as you were picking up on. we see one for all the characters, except Anya. which seems insane, as she's arguably his biggest, most personal victim. But of course that's completely by design. That's how little Jimmy thinks of her and dehumanizes her. But she does show up. When Polle talks to Jimmy towards the end (and there's a whole lot of symbolism surrounding Anya, the baby, and Polle that i won't get into right here) the text is the same color as Anya's. he's a representation of Anya's pain and anger. He cuts Jimmy off from quoting what Anya said about people's worst moments, where he was using it about Curly. It's like a "you think THAT'S your worst moment, not what you did to me?" Another thing about that scene is it's one of two times we see the night screen in game, the other time being the dead pixel scene with Anya.
I think even in appearance, Polle looks a little bit like Anya. And at some point, we see Polle broken on the ground, probably safe to assume Jimmy broke that in a fit of rage, as well.
As I am reading all of your comments, I am legitimately taken back by the amount of insight and even further analysis that I wasn’t even aware of. Just goes to show how great this game truly is I could really tell just from playing it this one time that there’s layers and layers underneath it.
Dude I know you're a psychiatrist, I've watch you for a while and you're good at it
But you picked up on everything so fast I'm just mind blown
Well, thank you as a psychologist it’s one of our responsibilities to be aware of nonverbal and verbal cues. Sometimes that leads us to picking up things a little bit quicker than others however, most of the time they can also lead to us over analyzing things so it’s both a blessing and a curse 😂❤️
I think people must have not just media literacy problems, but also simply attention span problems if they didn't clock in that Jimmy assaulted Anya. Her discomfort with Jimmy was one thing, and the fact that they've been hauling the cargo for a year when Anya tells Curly that she's pregnant, and previously asking about why bedrooms aren't locked but medical can be locked.
I swear, people need to read more. Hell, I read less than 5 books a year and I still clocked it the moment Anya asked about the bedrooms not being able to be locked.
I like how you immediately got a beat on Jimmy. He's a narcissistic control freak, a monster. You were right to be scared of him from the onset when he was already being a bully towards Anya in the beginning post-crash.
Waking up to my favorite reactor and analyst playing one of my favorite games from the best year of games for me?
We love to see it
Awww thank you I hope that you enjoyed the game!?
Something interesting is that the game tells you pretty early on who crashed the ship during the psych eval scene. If you notice which chairs Jimmy and Curly are sitting in, Jimmy is in the same chair as the person who crashed the ship.
Also, I saw someone mention in another play through how Swansea is sitting in the chair (they even implied he may not have been tied up) and is not a threat when Jimmy shoots. But in the hallucination sequence, he is seen attacking Jimmy when he shoots him, like he’s trying to justify killing him as self defence.
Also, not sure if some else mentioned, part of the reason Anya doesn’t like giving curly his meds is because she has to force it into him. He cants consent and can’t fight her off. Similar to what happened to her. Funnily enough, Jimmy seems to have no issue with it. (sarcastic)
Loved watching you play this. The way you were putting the pieces together and worried about Curly, who seemed the most vulnerable, being incapacitated by his injuries and then bam. Two lines later you know exactly what's going. I've watched so many people play this game and every single time we get to "Why do you think they put locks on the medical bay and not the sleeping quarters?" My heart stops. Because it's so clear.
Really enjoyed your perspective and the compassion you came to this with ❤
If you ever take game suggestions, I would love to see you play "Little Hope". It's a little supernatural, a lot psychological, and entirely based in the characters facing their flaws as individuals to survive. With a bit of Salem witch trials flavoring lol
i just started the video and i'm already amazed by the way you picked things up right at the start, it's already very insightful! thank you for uploading your playthrough :)
This popped in on my feed today and I must say that I loved this. You caught on to Jimmy and his bullshit so quickly. It was incredibly satisfying to watch. I'm unsure if someone else mentioned this, but for the Dead Pixel scene. I think it was a metaphorical way of talking about Jimmy. Anya sees the dead pixel, she sees Jimmy for the piece of shit that he is. And its always in the back of her mind, haunting her. But Curly? He can't see it. He even says that he's more focused on the big picture, their job, instead of looking for the dead pixel. Its my favorite scene because it carries such an emotional weight to it. There have been several animations some artists have made of it, actually.
And if you ever have an rpg inch to scratch, I would recommend End Roll by Segawa. It's an older rpg horror game that dives into the mind of a deeply traumatized boy. But be sure to look at the list of trigger warnings if you do decide to play. It has quite a few.
YOO WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW YOU PLAYED THIS
"In the back of my mind, it's always there."
oh yeah! as far as game rec's go. if you've never played the to the moon series i highly recommend it to you! they're pretty short games under 10hr (maybe even under 5 depending on speed), very good character and narrative-driven stories. they follow 2 scifi doctors who help grant people's wishes. there's a lot about life and philosophy and they hit right in the feels. also they have beautiful osts!
OMG YESSSSSSSSSS
edit: if you're gonna continue to psychoanalyse games, I highly recommend Slay the Princess 😊👉👈
Yeah, Slay the Princess is an amazing game
And its a really good choice for psychoanalisys
I SECOND THIS I LOVE SLAY THE PRINCESS
I love Slay the Princess :D
That would be a wonderful game to psychoanalyse!
Yessss!!! Slay the princess is AWESOME!!!
I agree!! I’ve literally referenced slay the princess in therapy a few times lol ♥️ its so good! And a great candidate for psychological analysis!
SO SO SO SO EXCITED OMG ED OMG OMG 9MG
Edit: Just watched it all omg. Was so good. Ed ur analysis of the characters especially jimmys straight from the start was phenomenal.
I so so recommend Chilla’s arts games, specifically “Parasocial”
Oh yo, thank you so much for watching the entire thing. I hope you enjoyed it. God is gotta be honest for a first play through of a horror game and especially something that was just recommended on the side. I am thoroughly impressed by this game. I hope that maybe I hope enlighten some of the characters or maybe I clock some of the characters right off the bat. Thank you though.
I have a special interest in psychology and recently got into Mouthwashing as well ! ! Was really happy to find someone properly analyze it and pick up on the details while playing through, so so underrated. I never payed much attention to the animations (like Anya’s body language) so it was interesting to see that pointed out.
If you’re looking for more psychology heavy games I reccomend Doki Doki Literature Club or The Coffin of Andy and Leyley if you haven’t played them. Whether or not you do, keep up the content it’s great man :) Happy to have found you on my recommended !
I have done doki doki literature club its great!!! ❤️❤️ I do plan on doing more games as well soon
@@psyculturistsAh well I’m glad you enjoyed then :D Looking forward to future games ! !
This has to be my favourite game, psychological space horror with no aliens is my top favourite genre, and mouthwashing is just a 10000/10 game too
Are there any other games that you would recommend?
It’s refreshing to watch a streamer who understands the story as well as enjoying the gameplay. It’s cool how you pointed out each of the characters behaviours! Very interesting ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Thank you ❤️❤️ I do plan on doing some more gaming streams honestly I am taken back by how well this gameplay has done so thank you 🙏
"i feel like im overcooking here" BABE IM AFRAID YOURE NOT
I know someone pointed out Anna’s id but it is actually there it’s on the wall but the messed us thing Jimmy’s id covers both hers and Curly’s. His two biggest victims and even in death his identity is over powering and erased them.
This is one of the most interesting playthroughs of mouthwashing I've seen, the way you're able to break everything down really highlights just how good the writing is. My only compaint is that I wish we got more of that analysis from a psychologists perspective towards the end.
Yeah I probably should've done it in two parts as I didn't know how much support the game would have. Next time will take more breaks so I'm not drained by the end ❤️👌
Higurashi and Umineko?!?!?!?
That would be the best thing in the world!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
but those are pretty long VNs (100+ hours) so mind that
But if we're talking about games like mouthwashing that would be great to see you psychoanalyze I would recommend Signalis - probably the best indie game in terms of plot and vibe
Omg I need him on umi and higu 😭
1:58:32 The sad thing is that Curly had to watch Ania die in front of him, without being able to do anything 😭
Seeing Anya's dead body will never not be a gut punch to me. Especially knowing that the first time we saw it, Jimmy was so delusional he literally erased her from his vision with that weird glitching texture so that he didn't have to confront what he caused.
2:02:24 I think it was more a case where both Curly and Anya agreed to call Jimmy out together with Curly working as a mediator between the two since Jimmy doesn't respect Anya one bit and she can never feel safe around him. After all, Jimmy "won't try pulling any bullshit" on Curly like in the psych eval and Curly seems to know how self-destructive Jimmy gets and how bad that can be when he has this much control in his work environment.
The Captain of the Tulpar has access to a rope, a knife, a gun, the code scanner that helps them make food on the ship and the wheel to manoeuvre the ship everyone is on. Out of all of those things, the Co-Pilot doesn't have access to the gun and code scanner (you need the latter to get the first) and that's it. Jimmy needs to be held back before storming off from this talk about "not taking responsibility for his own actions", which is how he deals with most things, or things would go down terribly on catastrophic levels. That's why Curly chased after him once Anya told him Jimmy is in the know about her pregnancy and the fact his best friend is also aware of what he did.
Chronologically, Anya revealed Jimmy SA'ed her to Curly two days before the crash at night. The next day is when Curly started panicking over the missing gun, possibly thinking Jimmy might have taken it, and where Anya revealed she was pregnant. Anya knowing there was a gun on the ship to begin with might be because Curly told her there was one and it has been missing from the Captain's quarters since then. Curly let Anya keep it in its safe case in the infirmary which she can lock but didn't reveal the code to her.
Anya talked to Jimmy alone the same day the crash unfolded :
If there was any plan made between Curly and Anya on how to tackle this matter which seems to be what was implied, it would have been put together either 48 hours or under 24 hours before the crash and Anya still went on to face Jimmy alone 24 hours after declaring she didnt want him to have the gun.
We dont actually know if Curly hasn't been doing anything behind the scenes as those hours passed : He could have been talking to HR to know what to do or checked if he could shift the course of the ship to head for a stop to at least get Jimmy off and apprehended. At the end of the day, this doesn't matter because by the time Anya revealed she was pregnant, the Tulpar was already in an asteroid field that couldnt be bypassed and they were all going to be stuck in it for awhile.
I've noticed that the only people who immediately recognise something's wrong with Jimmy and the way Anya acts around him in the first few minutes are people who know exactly what to look for in each case, whether that be in a professional manner or from life experience
the cartoon horse thing was him being sarcastic (anya says "jimmy acts like i do these evaluations for fun"), but also EXTREMELY cruel, considering what he did to Anya. Basically admitting to her face that he's a sexual predator, but it wasn't even personal. It didn't have to be her. She's not a person to him, just an outlet.
19:58 OMG, I never thought of Anya purposely hurting herself so she'd have a legit reason to be in the medbay and she'd be able to lock herself in. 😢
The psychologist figures it out straight away
This was an unexpected surprise! I love Mouthwashing and excited to see your perspective on it! Haven't even reached 3min in the video but I just know you'll easily pick up on the subtle hints of storyline lol.
(sorry for all the comments lol i have a lotta thoughts)
I love that so many of the twists in the game come from the fact that you play Jimmy. Jimmy is a cynical jerk, and he assumes that everyone else works the same as him. He assumes that Anya is going to unalive Curly, and he assumes that Swansea has a selfish plot and is acting out/crazy. When in reality Swansea probably started acting weird (especially around the player aka Jimmy) because Anya told him what Jimmy did. And it's also extremely likely that Swansea was trying to save the pod for Daisuke, not himself. He had no motivation to try to save himself, but was constantly talking about how Daisuke was too young and innocent and shouldn't have been on the ship with them.
Don’t be sorry at all about the comments. I actually really enjoy reading them all. As I’ve been going through them, I’ve been leaving hearts at the ones that I’ve read through in my God there’s a lot to take in.
The first time I saw Jimmy say to Curly, "I like it. We're in control here", it was a huge red flag. Really said something about his desire to gain, and use power. He clearly has issues being looked down on, or being denied the things he believes he's entitled to. Curly has plenty of issues as well, as he should have locked Jimmy up, or pushed him out the nearest airlock after finding out what he'd done.
Anya hid the gun away because she thought Jimmy was going to go sicko mode, and it did nothing to stop him.
Your gameplay was amazing! I am new here and have been watching gameplays since I discovered this game. Seeing your perspective and you catching clues so easily made me feel really happy.
I also never noticed anya's body language around j*mmy, you have opened my eyes a lot lol
This game left me with an existential crises for a week
Also, I would love to see you playing Spiritfarer or Bramble, those are one of my favorite games
I really enjoy your playthrough and comment! You got a new sub!
This was a good watch, i hope you try out some more games on your channel in the future
my only critique: please upload with louder audio. I have to crank up the volume to hear and then when an ad comes my ears get blasted.
Noted thank you ❤️🙏
To me the point of this game is to hold a mirror up to the player and say "See? Isn't this a little too much like you?"
But not about Jimmy. Sure, there are Jimmies, but those are far beyond reach. No, I think the point the developers are making is how easy it is to be a Curly. To stand by and take the easy route of "preserving the peace" and "talk to everyone" instead of taking the drastic action that would be right. To refuse to see the dead pixel that the victims can never unsee.
There are a ton of people online who defend Curly, who go "But what could he have done?" and list how they think there were no good ways to keep Jimmy locked up, how no one can expect Curly to kill Jimmy, that kind of thing. And that fundamentally misses the point. Because yeah, of course, did you think this kind of thing is easy? When there's a Jimmy in your life, do you think you'll be the hero and everything will move around so you can cast judgement without risk or hassle? When there is a Jimmy in your life, he will also be your friend. It will also be your job on the line. It will also be a thousand reasons why taking action would be difficult and detrimental. You still gotta fucking do it.
The developers want us to think about that. They want us to realise how easy it is to be a Curly, and to tell us that we need to be willing to make things harder for ourselves in order to make it easier for the victim(s). Being a good person and doing the right thing is hard. But we kinda gotta do it, or we'll crash with the metaphorical ship.
Also, whenever people list things Curly could have done in order to claim that no option was viable... I have not yet seen even one person who includes the most obvious one: Ask Anya what she wants to do. Kinda crazy how many people still do not consider her agency.
And this is unrelated to my above point, but Jimmy is also just fucking useless:
He constantly goes on and on about how much he is working and how he's doing it all to help everyone, yet every single good idea he has actually comes from Anya. She suggests the code scanner, she thinks of the extra medicine, all that stuff. Jimmy did literally nothing other than sulk around and claim credit for her survival strategies. It's even funnier when he explodes at her in the midgame, claiming that everyone always expects him to do everything. And he lists... the very few things we as the player did - over the course of multiple months. He wanted to be captain and have control so bad, yet he throws a hissy fit when he gets one task a month that gets spoonfed to him by Anya. He's such a pathetic loser.
Thank you for playing this game. I really enjoyed your insight. It's sad that so many people did not get that Anya was assaulted, so I'm extra glad to hear you get it and empathize with her. I saw someone else suggest that you should play The Beginners Guide, and I want to second that recommendation. It's a beautiful game that shook me to the core, and I think you'd find a lot of fascinating stuff in it!
We should have a Discord channel to suggest and up vote games for Ed to play
Since Higurashi & Umineko are very long I'd say it would be best if they take an Anime slot so you don't burn yourself out.
@@LusterCandy18 The Higurashi anime is passable (the vn is better), but the Umineko anime straight up sucks. It only covers the first half of the story and squeezes like forty hours of the vn into twenty something episodes. I strongly recommend the manga if you don’t want to play the whole vn, it’s easily on par with the original (minus music of course) and explains some things in more detail
@ Oh trust me I know, I meant playing the VN should take an Anime Slot because of the length of the Visual Novels
I definitely agree, the VN while ultimately superior I will say that till my lungs explode, is a long story. But SO worth it. I hope to GODDD that he plays it because I desperately need to see someone analyzing the shit that happens
Definetly not a stream game (Cuz it's kinda long and a bit of a commitment) But if you're getting into visual novels, I'd love to hear what you have to say about "Chaos;Head Noah" and it's sequel: "Chaos;Child" It's from the same people that made Steins;Gate (Though unlike steins;gate, Chaos;head and Chaos;child got done dirty in the animes, so stick to the VN's if you're gonna experience them) And, it's even set in the same universe as Steins;gate. (Chaos;Head being the first game in the franchise) I can't sing their praises enough, apsolutely worth checking out even just in your own time. I promise I'm onlt slightly obsessed about them.
Do you have a trailer or something that I could look up because I would definitely like to look into it
@psyculturists The story is very mystery focused, so I would avoid looking up too much. But I would absolutely recommend the PS3 opening called "Chaos logic" it's got an absolute banger of a song, and the visuals should have plenty to sink your teeth into
Edit: Realised I should probably supplement this a little, just so I can explain a gameplay mechanic. You play as Takumi. He's a paranoid shut-in that lives in a shipping container on a rooftop. Now Takumi can be pretty delusional from time to time, and to that end, there is a game mechanic call "Delusion triggers". In which you get to pick whether he has a positive Delusion, negative Delusion, or no delusion at all. This is how you unlock different routes, but all of that is NG+ so just feel free to pick whatever feels right for you at the time. I find Takumi utterly fascinating. And you really don't see MC like him
P.P.S. Just one more thing.
There's anime Columbo... I love him dearly. That is all.
Pls pls try Umineko and Higurashi tho both of these are really long. So keep that in mind
I’d lose my entire mind if this happened 😳 PLEASE
Yeah if he does play Higurashi and Umineko then I think most people would recommend playing Higurashi first with the 07th mod due to its simpler story and connections with Umineko
If you want another great game, you should check out Slay the Princess
I’ve heard of slay the princess I haven’t played it yet, but it’s on my to do list
I just had the sudden horrible realisation that Anya’s footwear, which sometimes makes people laugh, might be because pregnancy can cause ankle/foot swelling. I know when I used to have feet problems I’d often have to wear slippers or sandals until the swelling and pain eased up. 😨
Woaaaaah 🤯🤯🤯
Well, now I just have to wait of ED to play Slay the Princess and my life will be complete.)
So imagine this...
60 days left until home and you find a ship that seems troubled (whatever state this games ship is in)... well your crew can afford to support some survivors; and if nothing else you need to be able to report what happened on it so family of crew can have some relief maybe.
So you make your way in and notice its full of Mouth Wash and nothing else cargo wise.
You see the various dead in the way they were left... and last but not least your pretty sure some freak stuck a corpse into cryo but maybe that was for the best who knows.
How do you piece together what happened?
Turns out not a corpse but your medics going full tilt barely save the person and they start recovering...
Only they have a tale to tell... came across as a bit of a scary story; and he claimed its title as Mouth Wash.
That whole scenario is why I feel terrible for Curly.
No matter how perfect the situation he is found under... well PTSD to the power of Guilt is going to make all endings bad for decades assuming he can recovermentally and somehow hook him up to some good cybernetics. Sure the scenario I presented was one where he was froze for like 19 years... but point is there is no understanding without a survivor and why would say survivor want to live?
Truly a tragic horror story It was a blast to watch it play out.
Excited to see you play higurashi or umineko!!
Also i recommend night in the woods as a game to check out.
Mouthwashing has been staying with me since i played it. Truly a little gem.
There is a recent anime I think might pick your interest. The name is "My wife has no emotions". It is about a japanese salaryman that got a female robot maid and fell in love with her. I think it could spark some very interesting discussions about today's loneliness for young adults.
This actually does sound really interesting. I’ll check out a trailer or something. Thank you.
@@psyculturists Thank you for the great content too. I must admit, I liked the anime a lot more than I expected as well.
@@psyculturists I just kept thinking about the "propinquity" all the time 😆
Subbed at the mention of higurashi, hope to see that
We’re mouth washing with this one 🔥🔥
You should check out Omori some day!! It's a pretty long game but it has a great and very tragic story and I've been dying to see more psychologists playing it
oh boy do i want to see a "class of 09" playthrough. this looks interesting.
Do you mind explaining what class of 09 is?
@@psyculturists it's a visual novel that has a sociopath teenager girl as the "protagonist". the whole game is a WILD ride though 😅
@ woaaaah this actually sounds interesting ❤️👌
@@psyculturistsIts a dark conedy that takes place in 2009. Fully voice acted brilliantly. Theres 3 in the series. The original, the re-up, and then the flip side.
We dont talk about the flip side.
@@Post-buttwaveif he plays it I want him to skip flip side lol
That's what she said
No way
HIGURASHI MENTIONED????? HOLY PEAK
17:29 You picked up quick!
Higurashi and Umineko are great, but as visual novels, just reading them would take forever. Unless they are read in sessions of 4-6 hours on a regular basis.
OMGGG
You even mentioned the knobs before they became a thing
This is about to be fun
What ever happened to Edith Fitch?
Its another great explore the answer horror.
Personally tho I would rather you do a playthrough of Octopath Traveler one and 2 and try and figure out the whole story through its clues ahead of the post game content.
I know a lot of hours but a bit here and there until done is good enough for me.
I love their lore a lot.
I’m actually thinking about playing Edith Fitch. I’m just waiting for the right time to be able to play it on stream.
@@psyculturists Awesome. If you breeze through it it can be beaten in less time than Mouth Wash I think.
Really like how it built characters journeys up.
I think you'll find it fun.
I suggest a Haloween/Chrismas/Thanksgiving/etc stream for it. Since family is a big part of its charm.

The bitrate was so ass
I wonder how he would feel about Invincible.
As in the animated series?
That is no cake sir. you need your meds.
"I always do" such a lie J*mmy
It looks like you played this before... It don't looks like you're genuinely playing it for the first time
Chat decided to play this on stream so yeah first time. Just some people need higher media literacy tbh 😂👌
This does not feel like a blind playthrough at all. The Jimmy and horse thing at minute 31 is so telling idk. The game is so easily spoiled in one or two sentences and I'm sure just knowing who the villain is gives one an imense interpretative headstart.
i can almost guarantee it is, he's the kind of guy to say something at the start if he knows stuff. idk if you're knew to the channel, but this is just how ed is! he's very perceptive and often spends a lot of time to pause and analyze. he can pick up on subtle things that others might not, and figure out characters/plots earlier. in fact, i'd say he's so analytical he sometimes digs too deeply into things and comes to conclusions early/that are a little off, which he mentioned with the horse thing.
@@kiwiparfaits I've been watching Ed for quite some time and his insight especially due to his profession has been quite valuable and he has cooked pretty hard in his mushoku tensei videos before. But this leap at minute 31, to me, had no ground whatsoever and he expressed it with such certainty that it just... raised some questions. Could also just be tossing spaghetti against and wall and looking what sticks. It just felt way to farfetched for me.
@@Arkaniet that's fair. i think it's just that most people see the line "ive found myself s*xually attracted to cartoon horses" or w/e the wording was and completely brush it off/take it as a joke. but ed, already sensing red flags with jimmy, found more importance in the line and may have taken it more literally than it might even be. i think that's all that happened there, personally. he was on the lookout for why the captain crashed the ship from the start, so he was sensitive to every little bit of detail like that, and trying to connect pieces.
@@kiwiparfaits that line itself can be seen as so many things. A joke, some twisted powerplay, an actual thing that would need adressing. Ed even mentions early on in the video that these circumstances that they are in are alot to handle so psych evals make sense and he might only be able to open up about this development of deviency in this setting. At that point in the game we don't even know if the horror in this game is manmade or some cosmic horror stuff. The crashing sequence could mean both and none of it points to Jimmy except the horse which is the mascot of their company so it could also be nothing. Anyways I'm rambling. He made a leap that had so many different more plausible explanations that I think that he was tipped off by someone. It might just be that when he had his first assertions about Jimmy being a dick he read chat and someone spoiled it a little who knows. Thanks for indulging me, have a good one.
1:01:02 I've watched at least 10 let's plays of this game and I always find something new. Like here, I never noticed that Curly instantly tries to be quieter when Jimmy's in the room. I always thought that was a weird audio thing but it makes so much more sense when you think about it. I love how in depth this game is. I could literally analyze it for hours
