Rescuing a baby flying-fox on the ground: this is Roses of Picardy

- Picardy is a female baby Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found on her dead mother on the ground under powerlines. Her mother had been electrocuted and flies were starting to lay eggs on her.
Little Roses of Picardy was luck to not have any eggs on her so no maggots hatched out to compromise her progress. She was also lucky that she didn't have any burns.
I moved little Picardy onto another carer fairly quickly because I was inundated with other babies. She is doing well in care and will be released through a creche system.
When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. At this stage they'd be separating from this batty mums and be becoming more independent in the colony. In creche, at this age, they learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.
I called her Roses of Picardy because it just seemed to suit her. It's an old wartime song from WW1; hopelessly sentimental, but that's what they needed at the time.

That little face looks so confused and hurt about her mama dying. She's beautiful and hope she continues to improve. Very pretty name.

Hearing that mom had been on the powerlines for a long time really worried me; I thought the baby might be too weak to survive. I'm so glad she pulled through. What beautiful blonde fur she has.

Same here. It's touching when they are wrapped in mother's wings and mother has died that way. Yep, she was a real cutie.

I called her Picardy, not Roses (I've had heaps or Rose and Rosies because we've got several suburbs with Rose in the name - Roselands, Rose Bay, Rosebery, Roseville...). The Picardy was the jump off point for the name - I chose that name because I like the sound, and I like Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek. And then the song came into my head, and little Picardy got her full name. (I think I like names with a Pic sound in them - remember Piccalilli and Piccolo?)

Your compassion and KNOWLEDGE are extensive ❤️ ... was completely unaware how high mortality rate is for them just from power lines alone. Here on N.American deer, skunk & opossums fall to freeways regularly.
I hadn't considered what freeways do to your animals, other than if the animal can get to the side of the road they are likely to be hit by a car. Falling to a freeway though - I never thought of that.

I don't usually take stinky dead bats home with me, because I live in an apartment block and nobody appreciates a dead body stinking up the bin room for a few days in the heat, but it was garbage night and the body was quickly collected.

What a beautiful little girl. I was surprised to see so many colorful blanket “buns” in the oven. There were a LOT. I hope little one does well. At least now she has a fighting chance.
We had 6 or 7 babies at that stage, with a few new ones coming in per day, but not many surviving.
Dear Meg, to find a little girl who could have had maggots eating her, could have been damaged by electricity, never mind falling, I think being named for a sentimental song is perfect! Dear Roses is a doll!

Oh thank you for naming her Roses of Picardy… My maternal grandfather’s ancestors were from Picardy France by way of Québec Canada to Michigan USA… This really touched me… I am going to check out that song in a little bit… I’m a very sentimental person! LOL

She is a beautiful little girl, and I’m SO glad the flies hadn’t got to her. She looks like a strong one and I’m happy she made it over the critical period and is off in care. It is good to know that the sweet rose of Picardy will be out dazzling the boys with her blonde beauty...once she gets through crèche. After the way this season erupted, and so early...a righteous win feels good. I will toast you and her in bubbly, she gets milk.🥂🖤🇨🇦

She made me think I might need to swap my no. 1 and 2 spots on my bucket list. No. 1 is visiting the Orca rubbing beaches near Vancouver Island, Canada. No. 2 is visiting Australia and seeing all your amazing flora and fauna, but the Flying Fox is the top priority, followed closely by the Freshies.

Well that's a sweet bit of conversation I've never heard before. She's asking a question without being panicky or rude about it. She probably realizes she's been rescued after hanging on to her mum's dead body so long. I think she's a thankful and trusting little soul.

Well mum was well and truly burnt, so I would have expected Picardy to show evidence of burns at rescue if she had any burns. She didn't. I don't know how she escaped, but she did.

When you said the mother had been dead for days, I figured the baby would be in pretty bad shape, but she was pretty perky. That was uplifting that she was really doing well, considering the circumstances. Thanks for the video.
I had a baby who was on his dead mum on powerlines for a week (MOPs said they saw the dead mum about a week before). It had rained during the week and though baby was incredibly stinky and had maggots, she was in surprisingly good condition and was wandering around mum's body trying to figure out what to do.
I called her Fidget, because if she hadn't have been fidgeting around nobody would have noticed her and she would have died up there over the next few days. She had no burns and did amazingly well.,

It all depends on whether or not baby was also burnt when mumbat was zapped; it depends on the weather; how hot it is, whether or not it rains, and when someone notices the baby; and for how long they were up there.
