I have worked in Syria from Jul 2010 to Nov 2011 and I was there in Syrian when the Syrians were peacefully protesting against the Syrian government to step down from power. The Syrians, inspired by the Arab spring in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, wanted to put end to a dictatorial rule of their president Bashar Al Assad. They started peaceful demonstrations in many cities across Syria wanting Assad to step down from power. Some school children outside their school wrote a graffiti "It is your turn, Assad". To suppress this revolution and to save his power, Assad started to torture and kill the peaceful protesters. In April, 2011, a 13 year old boy by the name Hamza Ali Al Khateeb from the city of Daraa in Syria, was tortured to death with his genitals cut off for protesting. Barbaric tortures and killings like these angered the Syrians and they started to fight back. A group of Syrians broke out from the Syrian army and formed a separate army in favour of the Syrian people, because they felt it is injustice to kill their own people just for the sake of their president. This group of army called themselves as the Free Syrian Army (FSA). Shortly after the FSA was formed, Assad began to get arms, military and financial support from Iran and Russia to suppress the opposition in Syria by his people and began to use chemical weapons and drop barrel bombs on areas where there was more opposition. Angered by this Turkey (which was a long-time friend of Syria), Qatar, Saudi and the US started supporting the Syrians who protested with arms and finance. When things were going out of hand for Assad in 2013 and the rebels were winning, Russia decided to directly step foot in Syria and started to help Assad with all their weapons, military jets and Russian army soldiers to suppress the rebels. It was only after this, things went from bad to worse in Syria with new extremist groups emerging with their own selfish motives and the most prominent among those the ISIS. The problem with people around the world perceiving US is they relate every thing happened in the past by the US. When no western nation came in support of the Syrians who were getting killed by their president, it was the US which came to their support. What Bush govt did to Saddam Hussain was totally wrong. Bush govt attacked Saddam Hussain with a false accusation of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" which they never found, but what America doing now in Syria is not "attack" but "support". The problem with people around the world perceiving US is they relate every thing happened in the past by the US. Of course US has a bad history of Iraq War, Afghan War and Vietnam War, but what US is doing in Syria is commendable. When no western nation came in support of the Syrians who were getting killed by their president, it was the US which came to their support.
What Bush govt did to Saddam Hussain was totally wrong. I said Bush govt and not America because many Americans protested against the war in Iraq but Bush did it anyway.
Bush govt attacked Saddam Hussain with a false accusation of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" which they never found, but what America doing now in Syria is not "attack" but "support". They are just supporting the Syrian opposition to defend the helpless Syrians from Assad's torture and oppression.
