Magpies are getting territorial as the nesting season approaches, so Mat Manning sets up a decoying ruse to draw the corvids within range of his hide. With grey squirrels also visiting a nearby feeding station, it promises to be an interesting woodland hunt.

Great show as always Mr. Manning. When I witnessed that first Squirrel get hit, I thought at first its head blew up with all that grain flying everywhere. Quite visually unexpected, but at least it kicked its way out of the feeder tray. Take care and keep the great shots coming. William C. of the U.S.A.

I find it easier to snipe magpies in and around farm yards when they regularly come in stealing animal feed where I can use sheds for concealment.
Nice shooting Mat. I've never seen the technique you are using to bring the birds in. Very interesting using a raptor to get them in a defensive posture.

It's a useful technique when corvids are territorial around nesting time. Can be hit and miss, though - sometimes it works great, sometimes it does nothing...

bloody hell, Matt... what's with the stubble ?? you look like you've been living in that hide for a week !! Seriously though, great shooting to take down the thieving magpie. And that 2nd squirrel simply has to get 'the most dramatic expiration ever' award, the way it clung to that feeder before back flipping to the deck !! Glad to see You Tube come to their senses after the unnecessary cull of shooting channels.
It felt like I'd been living in the hide for a week. I'd been putting in a lot of time on several permissions - trying to hammer the squirrels before the trees are back on leaf. Didn't want shaving getting in the way. Looking slightly tidier now...

Grey Squirrels can be shot throughout the year in UK.
That hide didn't offer too much cover from view but nice session.
You're absolutely right. If I'd made it purely for magpie shooting it would have been a lot more substantial.

theshootingshow I intend to do a session this weekend with targets likely to be iguana, agouti, lappe or deer. I use stalking techniques but I am going to be meeting a guy on whose plantation we intend to hunt.
What pellets do you use as now getting into shooting and wanted to know what's best cheers
It's worth trying a few to see what suits your gun best, but Air Arms Diabolo Field are a good place to start. JSB, H&N, Daystate and RWS also have a reputation for making consistent pellets.

Why does that airgun sound like a howitzer?

Good question. It seems to depend very much on which camera/mic combo we are using, how close to the gun it is and which way it's pointing. Sometimes it will pick up the sound of the impacting pellet and very little from the muzzle report, and at other times it really amplifies the muzzle report. It still surprises us at times...
