In 1879, the horse tramway was inaugurated in the swedish city of Gothenburg (Göteborg). In 1902, all lines were electrified. Unlike most other systems in the country, Gothenburg's tramway survived the switch to right-hand traffic in 1967 and was expanded into the suburbs.
Today, the tram is the backbone of Gothenburg's public transport network. Thanks to the mostly car-free city center and its high travel speed, it is the preferred mean of transport.
Besides modern low floor trams of the M32 (Sirio) and M33 (Flexity) classes, the network is served by the M31 "Light rail" class, which has been equipped with a low-floor midsection. The M29 class, which is the last PCC-type car still in use in Northern Europe, can still be seen on workdays. Though, it is planned to replace them in the next few years.
