To be fair - If your test was a day shorter - the Dometic was the clear winner.
Like most, I'm not looking for the 5th day performer.
I want the strong all rounder.
And honestly the Dometic is that for me.
    That's why I bought one.
I swear after day 1 camping and me rustling around for beers all night....
The next morning, the ice has re-set - like refreezes - becomes solid.
    It's impressive.

A good comparison and testing. Thankyou. I have often wondered if there is a big difference between the big name brands. It's nice to know that the Evakool comes up trumps being Australian made is good as I like to support Aussie made. My brother has one of their fridges that has been going for many years. The one you tested being over 20 years old just goes to prove how good they are. Thanks again for taking the time to do the testing.

Great informative video. As a newbie I wasn't sure what the difference was and your video has helped me make a more informative decision or what icebox to buy. Thanks for making this video to compare the most popular brands on the market. Also I appreciate that the video was easy to understand and clear spoken. 👍🏼

Thanks for the video, I’m just about to buy my first ice box and was looking at the Dometic, mainly for the price but wasn’t sure. I’ll be running with one of those for sure. 👍

What a totally 'Anorak' but brill' video!! Thank you so much ! I have bought a Dometic Patrol & EXACTLY AS CAN BE SEEN IN YOUR VIDEO - the drain 'bung' is a weak point.
I find condensation on the outside of the box, at the drain point, when the rest of the outside is dry - &, If you look at your first / second assessment of the Dometic, you can see that the ice has melted much more towards the drain plug !
What a stupid mistake by Dometic.
The plug should be solid & insulated as per the rest of the cooler walls - but it isn't - it's a hollow plastic frame
However - ce la vie - but my next purchases will be Yeti roadies x 10 ( I need them for work )
The drain plug insulation is a very very big oversight by dometic
      Thank you
      So much
Videos like this are so worth it !
The Roadie is $75 / £50 cheaper than the Patrol !
      That's one hell of a saving !

Wow. Thanks for that. Yeti seems to be the gold standard in both performance and price (ouch). In recent years some cold competition has entered the market like Kong, Orca, Pelican etc but still similar price. That Dometic looks like the best over all value as its a lot cheaper, slimer profile while having almost the same performance as a Yeti.

Cheers, thanks for the comment. Yes, the Dometic sure did impress both on performance and price.

I'd say it has better performance, given that it won 4/5 days. Depends on how long one plans to be out tho

Brilliant review, thank you so much. I am actually thinking of getting an IceBox rather than a compressor fridge for my 3 to 4 days escapes (4x4 with a roof tent). A lot more economic, do you think it is a good choice? How do you think adding food above the ice affects the performance of the iceboxes?
    Thanks again!

    • @NJSInstructional
      @NJSInstructional  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you! We are in a similar position, we can't justify a fridge and then running dual battery systems, less boot space associated with running a fridge. We use our Icebox for anywhere from 1 to 4 day camping trips and found that if it is prepped properly, the ice will last and food will remain cool. Tip is to use plastic containers for food instead of paper / cardboard containers. Cheers.

I’ve actually wanted to know the difference between different esky/coolers for a long time now so thanks for the insight.
I own an Evakool ice box similar to the one in video.
    Have just subscribed.
    Cheers.

Given the everkool is a slightly smaller icebox but recieved the same amount of ice I would say they were all pretty even. I have the Dometic and absolutely love it. I like the compact size given it provides the same internal space as the yeti but won’t take up as much room in the car. This was the main reason I chose it as space is valuable on our trips.

With over 2 inches of thickness on the Yeti insulation walls you must prechill your cooler for at least 8 hours. Do that and nothing stands a chance.

    Question:
Do you find if the boxes are placed in a cool dark place it improves the longevity of the ice rather than having the ice boxes placed in direct heat/sunlight? Or is that just a common myth?
    Thank you.

    • @NJSInstructional
      @NJSInstructional  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Good question, it would definitely help having them in a cool dark place and out of the sun. Even having a wet towel covering the icebox will also help. Cheers

I was actually looking for comparison between dometic and yeti because the yeti tundra 75 liters retails for US$ 450 and the Dometic Ice Cool 70 retails for US$ 210. I mean, I could buy 2 Dometics for the price of one Yeti since the there is a negligible difference in performance between them.
The Yeti Tundra is made in the USA while the Dometic Ice Cool is made in Thailand, which is why the Yeti is more expensive.
I am actually returning the Snow Peak Hard Rock Cooler 75qt that retails for US$ 700, which I bought for around US$ 400 on sale.
The ambient temperature here in Kuwait this summer is around 48° C. I was kind of disappointed that the ice melted significantly after just 24 hours. Then I saw that the ambient temperature in Australia is just around 22° C on the hottest day.
I think the Snow peak can beat all of these 4 here. But sadly, I had to return it because it doesn't fit in my trunk by a few centimeters.
