For anyone who needs help: I've been playing for four years and I'm the first chair in my high school band. When you have your mouth on the mouthpiece, SMILE with the corners of your mouth! And also try not to put too much or too little mouthpiece in your mouth. Another tip is to not blow out your cheeks and keep your corners of your mouth nice and tight! Don't give up! Everybody is a beginner once! Keep trying and you'll do it :)
I'm a 40-something complete newcomer to music and the clarinet - and thanks to this great video I've now played my first note. Thanks! I look forward to moving on to your other lessons!
I don't get it, some days my clarinet plays and then others it won't. I use the same type of blowing and the same pressure and everything but it's like it just stops working help please.
I have a question. I am just starting the clarinet and I am making a noise but it isn't high pitched, it sounds lower. Am I doing it correctly then? Or am I doing it wrong? 😕
First thing to try would be to blow faster air. If it still isn't up to the F#, try taking a LITTLE more mouthpiece in and bite a LITTLE firmer. That should do it.
Oh my god! Your my life saver! I forgot my instrument at home and our class was assembling the instruments! I went home and went straight to you! Thanks!!!
Thank you no sound was coming out and the reason was I didn't have much mouth piece in my mouth. I'm definitely gonna get my clarinet tomorrow. I am in 6th grade and have passed all my tests for band, new sub :)
Thank u so much, I'm learning now, I'm teaching myself the clarinet and I was looking for TH-cam accounts for me to subscribe to so I can learn and this account is perfect, u are great at explaining things, I already learned how to do the first 3 notes and I stared yesterday!
Your videos are very good. They would have been a great resource for my beginners back in the 80's and 90's. After being a principal for the last 15 years, I back to teaching and I'm using your videos as resources for my kiddos. Thanks. CP
this is very helpful, I have had my clarinet for two days, i only know how to go up the scale and back down. I also can only play for short amounts of time
Is this normal: It takes an enormous amount of pressure to sound the note. I tried readjusting the reed, applied more moisture to it and still no changes. I tried the ten count exercise and all I got was a big headache. what am I doing wrong?
I know it has been 5 months but I thought someone else could use the insight as well. If you are using just the mouthpiece and barrel combination for your first sounds, there are three things I would check first to fix that problem (assuming it is all assembled correctly): 1. Make sure your reed strength is 2.5 or softer. Check the back. If it does not say, but a new reed that does. 2. Possibly too little mouthpiece in your mouth. With too little mouthpiece in, it is easy to pinch the reed closed without realizing it. Try adding a little more mouthpiece. 3. Make sure the tube is clear. Yes, I've had students leave swabs (and things) in their clarinet and forget to take them out.
OMG! I used to play the clarinet back in school and was good at it. I didn't continue because it was the schools clarinet and had to return it. Now yeeeeaaaaarrrrrsss later, I made the decision to return to it. Yes I have bought my first clarinet. I am very very shocked that I cant a sound out of it (neighbours should be happy for now). I guess I'll have to sit and practice and practice again to get the sound out. My stomach is hurting already....lol
I tried the challenge and it sounds at least two notes lower than yours (Yes I do ear training) Is it my instrument? (it's metal not plastic) I know with brass, it's your lip position, so I tried tightening my lips more and kind of got the pitch to go higher, but not by much. And yes it is just the mouthpiece, not fully set up. (lol don't try this when you have a cold, it makes breathing a lot harder :D I can do that challenge, I know I can, but I'm trying to learn clarinet because I'm very behind on my goals. I play the flute already and was given a used clarinet I have fixed up. It sounds amazing! Now to get the musician to sound amazing too... ) Thank you for the lessons! They help a lot!
If you were wandering the mouth piece and makes a different sound. This is because if you are beginner you use a less stronger reed than Selfridge. He uses a much stronger reed which makes a more greater tone i think.
I'm in 5th grade and I couldn't do a thing I have lessons tomorrow and I thought I would have to say I can't play but I was just about to give up I was just blowing into it and I made a noice this really helped 👍up
I'm new and I have had my clarinet for 4 days and I can make the sound but I have to practice my band face. And does anyone get this popping feeling in your jaw when you blow?
I am unable to follow the embouchure you explained i.e. the the teeth touching the mouthpiece. If I try hard, the Air is slipping off from the sides. Does this change from person to person based on his / her size of mouth? Looks like that to me. My Upper lip is not closing in while biting with teeth. Can you clarify please? Thank you for the wonderful tutorial (going into practically every nitty gritty.).
i'm learning to impress my daughter. she just started playing last august. and this is her lasat and final christmas present. #thethingsdadsdofortheirnumber1lady
Mine makes a really high noise. But please don't say put more mouth piece in or blow harder. Because I'm tried ever play of the mouth piece. But it doesn't make a sound until I'm half way down the mouth piece, which feels really uncomfortable. And I've tried blowing different amounts of air and it doesn't make a noise unless I let all my air out at once. And I can only hold it for like 2 seconds or less. I don't know what else could be wrong. The ones at school work fine but we aren't aloud to play those ones
hey @MrSelfridge, I just realized I was playing the clarinet with the reed side of the mouthpiece facing up. however I'm finding it easier to play and make sounds with it this way. Do you know if there have been any tests to see if this is in fact an easier way to play the clarinet? have there been any musicians that made this way of playing their thing?
I still can't get it I was able to get it on my first and 2nd try with my band directors clarinet but now practicing at home I can't make the sound :/... (yes I've tripled check everything so it's all setup right)
A way to make a band face is say wee(hold it)too than roll you bottom lip aver you bottom teeth(my music lesson teach told me and others this it's very simply)

I was like why u no work then i realized my mouthpeice was upside down
How do I breath while I doing clarinet
I literally disassembled and reassembled my clarinet three times just to find out I wasn't blowing hard enough 😂
I don't get it, some days my clarinet plays and then others it won't. I use the same type of blowing and the same pressure and everything but it's like it just stops working help please.
I play flute in my school band, and I have a clarinet too, so I'm going to play both in band after I learn! Thank you!!

This helped SOOOO much! I have been playing the clarinet since September and I had the wrong embouchure the whole time!
Thanks for making this video everyone in my class knew this besides me cause I had a broken reed for a week.

Mine makes a really high noise. But please don't say put more mouth piece in or blow harder. Because I'm tried ever play of the mouth piece. Chloe Pr0pp if it makes a high pitched sound then you have to much of the mouth piece in your mouth
i like how i am relay learning
I did everything but my clarinet doesn't make a sound. What do I do?
Sorry I was using the mouthpiece upside down, but thank you for responding! 😂
hey @MrSelfridge, I just realized I was playing the clarinet with the reed side of the mouthpiece facing up. however I'm finding it easier to play and make sounds with it this way. what happens if you sound low when you practice
where do you get this stuf
I'm not able to make that sound. All that comes out is that blowing sound 😖😫

Obviously with the reed. Use the mouth piece with the reed first then start adding the other pieces of the clarinet.
I can't hold in 10 secobd
Easier than expected
I still can't get it I was able to get it on my first and 2nd try with my band directors clarinet but now practicing at home I can't make the sound :/... (yes I've tripled check everything so it's all setup right)

I'm a beginner and my reed is 3 I'm just getting a honking sound
You should get a softer reed, like a 1.5, 1, 2
I need help doing the cheecks cause my teacher doesn't want me to make bubble in my cheecks

I'm making sound its just I can keep the sound for along time
