Well done, a battle to perfect the alignment, but you arrived there after minor adjustments were made. You are not the only one whose love affair with door hanging never developed beyond the intense dislike stage. The result achieved what you wanted, but we could all feel your pain and feeling of impending doom when it appeared to go wrong early on. Arrival where you wanted must now felt all the better. The use of glass to bring borrowed light, makes perfect sense and looks great.

Doug: I've been watching you since you left Indiana. (We're in Indiana) I like and respect what you do. I've hung 2000+ doors over my years as a carpenter. Please let me provide some guidance for your next door hanging project.
1] Build your jamb to match the door
2] Install the hinges and assemble the door & jamb together (Making it one unit)
3] Install the door casing on the hinge side (all three pieces)
4] Plume the hinge side of the rough opening (just like you did)
5] Hang the door from the hinge side (using your nail gun through the door casement)
6] Shim the keeper side (Checking the gaps all around the door)
7] Install the other side of the casement
8] With the door closed, install the door stop
9] Remove the middle hinge screw on the jamb side and replace it with a 3.5" to 4" screw into the framing
10] Once you're happy with the fit, remove the door and apply the finish (Not before)
If you follow this order of assembly, you won't have last minute fit problems, or mess up the finish.

Doug is too hard on himself. He said the first attempt was a failure. Nope, I disagree. It's a process. After 7 or 8 attempts I might be a bit concerned but of course I am speaking from personal experiences. Hanging doors has always challenged me. I found some old doors from an old farm house piled on the side of the road with other 'junk' - someone bought an old place and wanted to modernize it. He said I could have all I wanted. I actually rented a truck and made 4 hauls. 22 doors and no 2 were the same size. I managed to frame and hang one door in one day - my record definitely deteriorated from there. Doug and Ashley are an awesome team! With each and every project I can better 'see' their vision. Paying homage to the original house is important. This channel is so inspirational. (Nice haircut, Doug.)

Doug, I did something similar in my house. Switched out our spare bedroom door with a glass door and put a door that had glass in the top 1/3rd for the bathroom to allow natural light in the bathroom. The bathroom was tiny and there was no way to get a window. I dislike any space with no natural light. My handyman thought I was crazy putting a glass door on a bedroom and bathroom, even tho I was using privacy glass. Once he saw all the natural light that came flooding in the hallway and bathroom from that bedroom, he understood. We know how we want to live in our spaces. Criticism is sometimes the best motivator. But you'll get none from me, I love it all! ❤️

My home was broken into about 5 years ago. When the police came they told me that my steel doors were easy to kick in (which the burglar did do) because of the short screws which came with the door. He told my to replace all of the screws with long security screws that are very hard to break and are resistant to being kicked. I did replace the latch and hinge screws with the new screws. They screw into the 2X6's in my wall instead of just into the 3/4" frame. This is something everyone should do to increase the security of their outside doors and also for at least one inside door incase someone does break in another way. You can buy the security screw at most hardware stores.

They are so beautiful!! The doors, and the hardware turned out even prettier that I expected. I am so proud of you for the way that you handled this project. You have learned from your past trials. I was so proud of the way you didn't give up . You just gave yourself a moment to think it through calmly. The answers came and everything turned out wonderfully well. EVERYBODY makes mistake or has unexpected problems. That does not you mean you are unequal to the task. It is how you handle the problem that shows what you are made of. With all the doors you will have to hang before the house is done, this lesson is invaluable and you will take it with you as you move forward. Good luck with the roof. It should be less complicated than the inside projects. I was just thinking the other day that you would need to start finishing the roof pretty soon. So have a good day. Be safe. Love ya,

You bought a blank door, drilled and routed out for the hardware and built your own frames! That’s wayyy more than most carpenters or finish guys would ever attempt to do. Don’t sell yourself short. When we did our house, all the door casements were hand made. We only fitted the internal door stops after the door and hinges were fitted - 14 doors done this way. We screwed the frame in to place with screws under the stops (so you can't see them). The only door stop that needs to be tight is the one at the handle. Make the one at the hinges about an eight narrower, and the top stop rail is ever so slightly narrower at one end than the other. The door won't rattle, as the handle end door stop is the one that stops draft/wind rattle. Adding the door stops before fitting the door will be annoying to you, as every door is slightly different in depth and true.

Oh, and we didn't fit the striker plates for a few months. Didn't even cut the holes. That lets the door rest into place, as the door will sag as it dries out. So, the bolt was not fitted either to the knobs till much later.

Love the stain...totally understand the frosted door...but for the sake of unity in the bedroom,I would have used the same frosted door on bath room and the same knobs. If you are inclined, you could replace the bathroom door and hardware to match the hallway door. ( then use that beautiful bathroom door somewhere else in the house.)

@@diyfferent ... General Finishes is my favorite stain brand. It's the only brand I now purchase for flipping furniture and small household projects.
