Finished in 2008, it got so much hate from the start because Axl is the only member in this band from the 80s/90s and it was so different from their previous stuff 15+ years prior. No Slash, no Duff, no Matt Sorum. But, Axl is an incredible musician and singer, and he creates a damn good album here and I think you'll enjoy most of it. Also Buckethead is in most of this album. If you've never heard his stuff, you really should. Incredible guitarist

This album in my opinion has Axl's best songwriting, I think it's incredible and makes it extra special that it isn't as popular as it should be

Very true! But, IIRC, people did indeed eat crow when it came out, especially the ones that had just talked so much shit. It’s a really underrated album.
It also has a burden of carrying the gnr name

There Was A Time is one of my favorite GN'R songs ever, it's so well put together.

By the way, the highlights of this album (in my opinion) are Chinese Democracy - Shackler's Revenge - There Was A Time - and This I Love, but every track deserves a listen.

This album was genius, amazing album. If it wasn’t it GNR album and taken 15 plus years to be released it would have been huge
Man, this album is a masterpiece! I'm being honest, there are so many layers in there, so many things going on, and the vocals/lyrics are amazing! Even nowadays, after 13 years of its release, I keep on finding out new stuff about it. I'm a huge gnr fan, and I can say that this album is one of their best creations. But, of course, only with Axl and Dizzy Reed.
When I saw this my eyes were so wide, I’m amazed, this song is amazing. Better, shacklers revenge, catcher in the rye and this are my favorites.
This album has had quite a lot of people working on it. Only Axl and dizzy reed were the only recognizable ones.
I like the album but unfortunately people will criticise it because theres no slash,duff,izzy etc and doesn't have the GnR sound or edge that people like about them.
I hope when you finish listening to Chinese Democracy the next one i would recommend would be Velevet Revolvers albums contraband and libertad.
Its a supergroup that contains former Guns n Rose's members slash,duff and matt sorum along with stone temple pilot frontman scott wieland.

People will recommend certain songs from this album but honestly just listen to all of them bc they’re all pretty subjective.
It's different because this album is basically Axl's solo album - there are no original GNR members except him and pianist. I dont wanna say that album is bad, its really good, but in my opinion its not better than others from 87-91.

Yea this was basicly Axls Solo Album. And it is pretty good just not Guns N' Roses...most others had Solo Albums too and you can hear the different styles and u kinda get why they're so good as GN'R when they combine....

The guitars are definitely one of the main changes on this record. It’s definitely very unique. The heavy gritty sound is probably because there was at least maybe 3 or 4 guitarists on this album which all of them had very unique styles of playing. Robin Finck seems to be using some type of flanger/wah effect on the first solo, but Buckethead (the guy who plays the second solo with a lot of the “squeaking” noises) definitely uses the effects and enhances the playing. For the very high pitched sounds he’s using a Whammy Pedal which you can set to a certain octave, above or below and it’ll basically drop or high the pitch. Those chopping sounds are made by his killswitch, it comes in many forms but Buckethead uses this button and it basically cuts the signal of the guitar to the amp by pressing it, pushing it a bunch can make a cool choppy sound. Glad you enjoyed the song!
Also I recommend Sebastian Bach Album 'Angel Down' Axl is on a few songs and it's quite a heavy album.

This album aged like a fine wine. Crazy that it took forever to come out. Ppl took that anger and impatience and wrote the Album off. “No Slash, No Duff”. It has aged excellently. Only 3 songs that I’m not a fan of.

But I agree with an earlier comment. Check out slash duff and Matt sorum supergroup Velvet Revolver.
Their first album Contraband is fantastic . Their second Libertad, not so much but still has some good songs on there

Look its a rocking album u just have so called gnr fans dogging it cos its axl, it was all OK for duff slash n matt to set up there own band, get great praise for it, yet axl gets total shit for keeping the name gnr going at that time, outstanding album

One in a million is the only song GNR has with the N &F word in it. Don’t judge them by one song, especially when you didn’t understand what the song was about, or why Axl wrote it with those words. Lots of famous black rappers even understood it, and were ok with it.
Incredible album, shockingly underrated (for stupid reasons i.e. boohoo, no Slash, boohoo, no Duff etc.).

This is a AXL ROSE solo project. NOT a Guns N Roses album. Axl the only original member. He owned the name so that’s why it says GNR on the album. But DEF NOT a GNR album.
