I wonder what the the requirements are for each stripe for each belt
Prime example: what are the requirements for earning your 2nd stripe white belt, third, etc etc??

I'm about 7 months in to training and I went from "I can't wait to be a blue belt" to "I want to remain a white belt as long as possible."

Man - that is so funny! I was just talking to my friend who coaches the lunch classes at my BJJ school. He’s a 3 or 4 stripe purple. Incredibly awesome at BJJ and a great coach. I was telling him the other day that at one time I was like “man, I’m ready to strap that purple around my waste” - now I’m more like “I’m good at blue” especially since I’ve been a blue for a while now. I seriously want to stay a blue for as long as I possibly can....it’s a weird concept and difficult to explain to others so I’m glad to read your comment. Of course, ultimately it’s up to our coaches/professors - I just know I feel comfortable at blue (finally)....and it’s a nice feeling. Appreciate the comment and support on the channel! Hope you consider subscribing if you haven’t! 🙏👋👊🤙

Thank you for this wealth of info. I’m a dad who started at 43 with a 4 year old son. My intentions were to come up doing it along with him. Just got my second stripe on my white belt. Was doing that 5 x 5 program. But like you said it didn’t work for me. Now I’m doing total body workouts. Concentrating on core lifts. So if I don’t get to the gym two or three days a week. Most likely I’m hitting each muscle at least twice a week if I only go twice.
You hit a lot of topics which are great for guys over 40. I appreciate the info. One of the biggest is keeping your son or child in jujitsu and teaching them that it’s a lifestyle. There’s a guy in my gym who is a brown belt. He has a 15 and 16-year-old son. They are blue belts now. They are beasts. He told me that he never let his kids quit. They took breaks to do other sports. But they always came back.
Keep doing what you’re doing.. great stuff. Just downloaded the alliance blue belt requirements. And ordered the Jujitsu encyclopedia for 25 bucks off Amazon.
    Thanks again !

Man, really appreciate the positive feedback and incredibly happy to hear that you’re getting value from these videos! In regards to kids, I have 3 all ages 10 and under - and they all practice BJJ.
I’ve been conflicted with “making” them attend although - after researching and speaking to others - I think making them practice is the right thing to do at an early age. There’s good qualitative data to back that up that I won’t go into here and, of course, I’m not saying other parents should make their kids go...it’s just what I would do. The good thing is: I don’t have to! They love it. My daughter is 10 now and she’s been practicing for about 4 years.
I’m like you, In addition to loving BJJ, I love having one more thing to connect with my kids on...when they have a tough roll, on the car ride home - they’ll ask me to work with them on the issue....it’s incredible and I don’t take second of it for granted.
Congrats on becoming a 2 stripe white belt. You’ve made it farther than most! Again, appreciate your comment and support on the channel. Hope you consider subscribing if you haven’t already!
Also, let me know how you like the BJJ ENCYCLOPEDIA....I have the Jiu-Jitsu University book and it’s absolutely incredible....here’s a link to some BJJ gear I use . A link to the book is in there as well.
Being completely transparent here: I get a small commission from Amazon if you order anything from those links - it won’t impact your costs...i just created that storefront because folks ask me about gear I use...and it’s so much easier updating an Amazon storefront than changing links in previous videos...especially if I stop using a product...
No pressure just putting it out there. Thanks again and I truly hope to see your comments on future videos!

I'm in foundations, 2.5 months or so now. Loving it, wish I would've started this 10 years ago. I'm 49, and it's one of the best workouts I've ever had. I'm into mountain biking and I wanted to do something extra for a workout, I was hating the fact that I get short of breath on these killer climbs with the bike and having difficulty keeping up with the younger guys I ride with. Plus I wanted to lose some weight and I've always been interested in self defense. The shortness of breath is improving on the mat. I'm looking forward to my stripes as a white belt and have been wondering what the specific requirements were. Thanks so much for the info, it will be very useful, test or no test. I'm pumped, can't wait.

Alright full disclosure i honestly came on here to blast the video. The title struck me the wrong way. The idea of how to get your blue belt FAST is just an irksome concept to me. At my school on avg it takes folks 18 months. Perhaps faster if they are competing and doing well. So the idea of getting the blue belt FAST sounded like a shortcut in the process.
However upon listening i realize what you are really talking about is how to focus your training and drive your progress forward, which im all for. Im sure many people have experienced the come in learn a move roll hope it clicks one day and just being uncertain where their training/progress is headed. But this is advice on how to direct your progress which i think is very valuable.
Good video im glad i gave it a listen. I think id like to buy the bjj univ. book.
Fyi im a recent blue belt which took abt 2 years including the 6.5 months my gym was closed due to covid.

JJU is an excellent book 🤘🏻. I also watch very specific videos about Pin Escapes and Submission Escapes by Danaher, Jordan Teaches Jiu Jitsu, and Knight Jiu Jitsu, drill the steps at home, then apply it during class/rolling to help Survival.
As far as belts, I’ve never understood the attention put there, preferring to just enjoy the process of increasing my skill and precision. Belt progression will happen naturally when our proficiency earns it. This mental habit is probably from my Wing Chun training, which I’ve been doing since early 90’s - nobody wears the sashes, and I only recall once ceremony that happened after 10yrs 🤣. This was because nobody cared about it, they all just wanna train and become increasingly proficient.

For me, it was best to learn all the pins and then guards and what made them effective with submissions. Two basic submissions, an escape and a different entry. Which positions and guards? ALL OF THEM. It sounds like a daunting task, but if you approach it with an intensity and obsessive like passion, it's not as difficult as it seems. Applying it and making it all ebb and flow is another story.

Personally I dislike videos that revolve around belts. I was a white belt for 2 years when I was showing up nearly every day. I was doing better than higher belts by that 2 year mark so really the belt doesn’t matter. I know some people get discouraged by belt rankings and honestly I wish they weren’t needed but they are, otherwise competitions and hierarchy would be a mess. But achieving a belt should not be a persons goal, a persons goal should be to better themselves as a jiujiteiro and as a person. Also when you make your final goal a belt, you are just setting yourself up to plateau and loose interest when you reach that belt. On the other hand if your goal is to constantly get better, your drive will never stop. I don’t know I guess it’s just a pet peeve of mine 😂

Because according to these standards, these competitive white belts should be getting their brown belt straight up haha

I like it because it forces me to learn the techniques required at each level. I feel like getting promoted without testing means my instructor feels I’m rolling at that next level which is great and I wouldn’t turn it down 😂😂😂 but it forces me to trust the instructor’s call and I’m more of a trust but verify kind of guy. I still refer back to the Alliance test to ensure I’m on the right track (despite if I get promoted or not) - just want to be sure I’m focusing on the right areas so the alliance information is more of a guideline...certainly not meant to replace my awesome instructor! Why would you want to get your blue belt as "fast as you can"? too many chase the belt instead of the skill. Ask yourself this question, would you rather be the white belt that submits a blue belt or a blue belt that is submitted by a whitebelt.

    • @midlifebjj
      @midlifebjj  ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. The belt doesn’t really matter. I’m 47 and a purple (185 lbs)- Just the other day I was tapped by a 27 year old 4 stripe blue (approximately 220 lbs)… the belt is indicator of skill level…not age or or weight level. That’s why there are age and weight classes in BJJ tournaments. If a 60 year old black belt goes against a 25 year old purple…the outcome is unpredictable. That doesn’t mean the 60 year old black belt is less worthy…age matters…weight matters..belt level matters..these are all variables that need to be included into the equation.
