Vintage Ten Tec Triton IV CW SSB Transceiver Ham Radio QRP demo

- Here's a very clean example of a Ten Tec Triton IV. These are great transceivers for field CW use. There is a lot of history behind this model and it's name. Google it.

That's my favorite CW rig ever. Awesome for QRQ, love the 150 hz quartz filter.
I had the original 50w Triton back in the late 70's. Several years ago I got a basket full of something. It was a Triton II with 100w. It was free, so I put it back together, repaired and aligned it. Okay, so the case is held on with duct tape since the plastic cabinet screws are hopelessly stripped, and oversized. I spent $18 for the stuff to build a 15' high NVIS antenna, and worked WAS on three nets and two bands over the ensuing year or so. I called it my "$18 Ham Station." Never could find a real mic for it, but did have a CB hand mic in the junk box. I think the Tritons called for a hi-z mic element, but the one I had was only about 700-ohms. Still, the audio on the thing is the best of any rig I've owned. The only downside is that for a solid-state rig, it needs a half-hour of warm-up to avoid frequency drift.
My Elmer had given me one with the VFO in 2010. All I had to do was get the mic. Loved the unit.
Great rigs. Only draw 500ma on receive. Replace the S meter bulb with a LED, and it drops to near 400ma. Great for field work. Quiet receivers on them as well.
I had one of those years ago. The best part about it to me was that it was made in America.
My elmer had given me one in 2010.. I had cleaned it out real good .... it was sitting in his shed since 80s. worked great
And, I've since come up with two Argonauts and two Triton IV's. Note that the Triton IV is often called the Model 540 right down to having "Model 540" printed on the faceplate. Yet, I have the repair manuals for both the Triton IV and Model 504 and they are different radios. For instance, the power connector pins on the rear panel are a completely different hookup between the two. Yep, identical connector, but different pinout. Be careful if you are going to use a manual to work on these things.
The reason for the change to "540" from Triton IV was due to a cease and desist from Motorola due to them already having some Triton radio copyrighted. Naturally such a corporation would mess with TN Ten-Tec. Lame.
Terry, what microphone are you using in this video?
What is the "OT" light on the front panel? Just powered my up after 8 years in storage - no audio output, any hints?
Problem found replaced the LM386 on the audio board, working great worked many DX stations over the last 3 months.

wkaibigan haha, Yes, I do understand. I plan to incorporate some wine again soon! Today, I'm picking up a new K2 transceiver. Thats why the Ten Tecs are hitting the chopping block. I promise you a K2 and wine fest tonight!
