    One word of advice. Keep your old German distributor as a spare and keep it in your car. Two days ago the electronic distributor kit when bad on my 1971 VW Super Beetle, the center part with the magnets turned to pieces. There I was on a parking lot and thank God I kept my old one just in case. In a couple of minutes I installed it and I was back on the road!

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couldn’t agree more. I set the timing with the old distributor in place, remove the lock down clamp so when I drop it back into place the timing is set. Definitely doesn’t hurt to carry spare parts!

  • @MrGarcon98
    @MrGarcon98 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    i was trained on this type of ignition in the 70's , for me its not having to check timing every so often , with this you can have a little peace of mind about that task ,,,,,dont forget to install a resistor so you dont exceed amps and burn it out ! have a good day

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is nice to pretty much set it and forget it. I carried the points and condenser in my tool bag as a backup.

      high ohms coil should be better most makers of modules they usually tell u not to exceed 4amps so the module does not get hot ok this is ohms law thats all ,,,,,you add all the resistance for example coil 9ohms "example resistor say 1ohm ok equals 10ohms take a voltage reading say 13.5 volts devide the 2 and you get AMPS ,,,,,now my pertonix box did not come with any instructions with it ? and i see lots of people connecting 12 volts to the pertronix ,,,i am guessing we can do that with this ignition i guess it will take 12 volts ,,,,,i DID NOT do that with mine i ran a 1 ohm resistor between to keep the module runing cooler ,,,,heat kills them , mine has been in over 3 years now i ride an average or 50 to 200 miles a day every day i am retired 70 years young its my hobby LOL ,,,,,i just did not wanna run 12 volts to it ,,,,,,its not nessesary at all ,,,,,i have great spark ,gass mileage is super etc etc etc ,,,,,,i had forgot i posted a comment on here is why it took so long to answer ,,,,,my apology my friend ,,,,,,,hope this makes sense to you ,,,,,god bless @@stevegearlds7227

      VWJawbreaker I could imagine it really does. I’m probably going to go that direction. Right now I currently have a Mallory dual point distributor on hand. I used it on my last beetle and it performed nicely. Or the dual Weber’s made it feel better, not sure which one. But I think electronic would work much better!

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You show this just putting it in.
    But to get this to work, you have to re-time it, right? Possibly the timing might happen to land right where it should be, but then again, it might not. There's some variation in points adjustment anyway.
    Do you have a video adjusting the timing on the Pertronix unit?
    (I have a pertronix unit, but I figure your subscribers would want to see that.)

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good point however by pulling the distributor with the clamp, the timing should be spot on. Of course it’s a good idea to double check your timing to ensure it’s correct. Setting the timing with a Pertronix vs points is the same procedure.

      Depends on what distributor you want to run and which module you get. Some modules do require a different coil but all modules are capable of dropping in place of the points…. Just make sure you get the appropriate module for your distributor.

    I just installed a pertronic on my 72 2.0 Pinto with the Flame thrower coil as a kit I got it from ebay $128 . I reset the timing, drove it and it kicks ass, 80 miles later it starts backfiring and powering down on my way to the swap meet, tac jumps to zero then back up to normal. I pull over and car idles fine. but as i get in the gas it's having trouble picking up to speed while I'm letting the clutch out, I feather it, it gets going then bogs and backfires LOUD AS HELL, lol. at least 20-30 times while I'm getting her home about 5 miles away. I switch out the coil, still the same bogging. then I start checking coil wire, alternator wires and a few other connections, Now it's seems ok, Then last night, It acted up again.
    I'm hearing from some youtubes to run a hot from the steering column to the hot on the pertronix wire?? by doing that, I'm guessing you leave it off the coil if you're doing that type of wiring?

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s really odd man, I haven’t seen an issue like that before with Pertronix. Try disconnecting your tach wire and see if you still have the same issue. I’ve seen where the tach wire shorts out and causes issues.

    Great instruction video. Thx. I just installed in my SVDA on my '73 Super Beetle.
    One thing I had to check was the coil resistance which Petronix advises must have a MIN 3 ohms. I didn't realise that until I received the module.

      VW RICH FLAT4 what’s sad is the module I was using just burnt up on me 😔 but I installed it before I was recording videos. Went back to points for a week, missed the smoothness from the electronic so I went with the CB Performance Magnaspark. Man, seriously money well spent!

      VW RICH FLAT4 it should help. If you’re battling a carb issue or running way too rich or lean, you may not see a difference. With electronic, the spark is stronger especially if you change out the coil to match the ignition module.

      What about the coil , do you have to use a coil with internal resistor or outside resistor, cause I used a coil with no resistor and burned the module, I got a pertronix. 40,000 v .

      @@VWJawbreaker thanks, i did some more research, i ordered the wrong electronic conversion. I looked in my pile of crap that came with the car and I have 4 old distributors all with the old style vacuum advance.
