i can totally understand people saying they cant afford to evacuate, they may not have the money, they may not have the vehicles to get out. they may not have a place to go. All i can say is if you know someone who is undecided and you are leaving - get hold of them, offer to take them with you. if you know someone leaving and you dont have the vehicle - ask them if they will drive you. do what ever you can to get out please. stay safe, be smart and may god keep you safe. take your ID, your important info, your sentimental photo's, pets etc but go please.

I am an islander and trust me, Puerto Rico’s housing are built to hold hurricanes up to 300 miles per hour winds and look what happened!! The pressure dropped and the rain pushed the way in throughout the cracks , doors and windows. Don’t compare wood with cement. Be safe, and God bless!!!!
Jeremy Chinea Rivera I’m going to add my two cents about building homes nowadays. As I write this the year is 2018. Wood / lumber for homemaking should be things of the past. We should not be making homes out of wood anymore. I know people who waste $200,000 or more building a brand new home and made out of damn wood only to have it destroyed a year later by a tornado. I used to live in Puerto Rico for 20 years and all the homes are made out of concrete from top to bottom, no lumber / wood needed whatsoever. There are so many disadvantages to making a Home out of wood versus concrete and here is my list. With a wooden home you will need a lot of insulation. With the concrete home you don’t. With a wooden home you will need to worry about termites if it’s not treated. With a concrete home you don’t. With a wooden home you have to be aware of short circuits that cause a fire that can burn the house down. With a concrete home you don’t. With a wooden home you have to worry about tornadoes and hurricanes yanking off the ceiling and what not. With the concrete home you don’t. There are so many disadvantages for making a home out of wood / lumber that I cannot see why people don’t make homes nowadays out of concrete which has many advantages over a wooden home and not to mention way safer. Oh, and it’s not that expensive either to make a home out of concrete. So stop using wood / lumber like we are in the 1800s and start making homes out of concrete for a safer family environment. A lot was done for Puerto Rico, but it's hard when they neglected investing in infrastructure. So, when disaster comes, they are not prepared and makes it harder to help them. Same like here in Hawaii. We tend not to do proper maintenance, so when disaster hits, there is a domino effect that everything breaks down. A few years ago we had a power line go down and it triggered a series of blackouts that eventually covered the whole island of Oahu. You are vulnerable if you do not update and maintain your infrastructure. Don't blame others when you don't keep your house in order.
They don't, the point is that it looks as to be that it will be choping the costline up if it's not going to be going straight all the way, as you can see in the chart the longer it stays in the coast the more storm surge damage it will cause and that's really bad. Either way, hope you stay safe.

I'm from Jersey and went through Sandy a few years back. Being an electrician (private, not part of a utility company) we were absolutely swamped the days after the storm. We lost power for nearly two weeks and had to drive an hour at least, just to find a working gas station. The storm surge caused my family's shore house to get completely flooded despite being 4' off the ground. I can't imagine how bad this 9-13' storm surge is gonna be when you add in the massive waves that are gonna be riding that surge.
Anyone who chooses to ride out a hurricane on a barrier island is a fool. Anyone who chooses to stay in a single family home near the coastline, when the storm surge is predicted to be 9 feet or higher, is a fool. Property can be replaced, lives once lost can never be regained.

I lived through hurricane Andrew in 1992, it was horrible. Houses looked like doll houses half of the house was just sheared off. We didn't get electricity for 3 weeks. Please leave because it's not just the storm it's also the weeks after with food, water and gas shortages. Praying for everyone's safety. Everyone stay safe! I live in Florida where hurricanes are kind of the norm/joked about but regardless we always take the proper precautions. On top of that, many houses in certain areas of Florida are built to withstand hurricanes. Also, we have no basements and we usually have hurricane preparedness kits prepared in case! If you absolutely can not leave for whatever reason, board up your doors and windows, stock up on canned food and find a room in your house with little to no windows (center) where you can camp out if possible. Get extra batteries for flash lights, a small radio, and candles (be careful of fire). I've never needed sandbags, but they are useful-- I have heard of people filling up trash bags with water as replacement. If you run out of service you can change your voicemail so that people trying to contact you can be updated. Fill up a tub with water prior and fill gallon bags with water as well. However, please evacuate if you can!
We've were hit by hurricane Rita, Ike, a few tropical storms, then Harvey. Rita was a wind event. Trees down for miles and miles. Ike was a storm surge event that flooded numerous cities around our area. Harvey was a rain event with 60 plus inches falling in my city. Our home didn't flood until they opened the dam. There are soooo many factors to consider, other than hurricane wind mph. Tornadoes, loss of electric, banks closed, trees down, flooding, cars flooding, gas shortage, etc...I could write a dam book, been through so many of these.

I grew up in Camp Lejeune North Carolina which is Onslow County in Jacksonville and the Marine Corps Air Station in New River is there as well. Please pray for all the potential victims but don't forget about our Marines that are stationed right there at Ground Zero. They are Fighters though and you had better believe they'll be the First Responders to go out there and help people. That was my childhood home for 15 years and I miss it every day.

When I lived in Carolina Beach, I always stayed up to Cat 3 storms, we were on the third floor and someone needed to watch the property, protect against looting afterward, etc. Others took the cars inland. But if a Cat 2 is going to last 4 times as long as normal, it's worse than a Cat 4. The longer the rain and winds stay, the deadlier it gets. I learned the hard way when a storm went out, turned back inland and almost ripped the roof off my 3rd floor apartment. We were huddled in a stairwell on the 2nd floor and getting whipped with foliage and sand. Florence will be a 12 HOUR STORM+ literally sitting and spinning. It takes my breath away, I can't imagine it. I respect people's decisions but I do hope they are educated decisions, that everyone is getting the word on how long this storm will sit there. BTW after Fran, my building was demolished as the surge flattended the end of the island, none of the buildings could be recovered. Fran was fast. There's an inland lake that just fills up and joins the ocean, after that the ocean crosses west into the inlets. Takes only 6 feet to cover most of Carolina Beach. GTFO NOW

I rode out hurricane Harvey in Corpus Christi Tx because I didn't have the money or a reliable car. Although the wind wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, it was scary at times, especially when the big tree in our front yard fell, ( missed the house!) The rain was nonstop. Then the power went out, that's when the fun started. The humidity was unbearable, it took 4 days for a crew to restore power to the neighborhood, but I still didn't have power because our breaker box got ripped off by a leaning post. What I'm trying to say is, if you can evacuate, do so, but if you can't, your chances of surviving are fair, depending on how far away you are from the center of the storm. I was 40 miles away. And it wasn't so bad. So good luck, and don't feel like you won't survive, with a little luck you'll be OK.

A lot was done for Puerto Rico, but it's hard when they neglected investing in infrastructure. So, when disaster comes, they are not prepared and makes it harder to help them. Same like here in Hawaii. We tend not to do proper maintenance, so when disaster hits, there is a domino effect that everything breaks down. A few years ago we had a power line go down and it triggered a series of blackouts that eventually covered the whole island of Oahu. You are vulnerable if you do not update and maintain your infrastructure. Don't blame others when you don't keep your house in order.

I'm from Jersey and went through Sandy a few years back. Being an electrician (private, not part of a utility company) we were absolutely swamped the days after the storm. We lost power for nearly two weeks and had to drive an hour at least, just to find a working gas station. The storm surge caused my family's shore house to get completely flooded despite being 4' off the ground. I can't imagine how bad this 9-13' storm surge is gonna be when you add in the massive waves that are gonna be riding that surge.

I lived through hurricane Andrew in 1992, it was horrible. Houses looked like doll houses half of the house was just sheared off. We didn't get electricity for 3 weeks. Please leave because it's not just the storm it's also the weeks after with food, water and gas shortages. Praying for everyone's safety. Everyone stay safe! I live in Florida where hurricanes are kind of the norm/joked about but regardless we always take the proper precautions. On top of that, many houses in certain areas of Florida are built to withstand hurricanes. Also, we have no basements and we usually have hurricane preparedness kits prepared in case! If you absolutely can not leave for whatever reason, board up your doors and windows, stock up on canned food and find a room in your house with little to no windows (center) where you can camp out if possible. Get extra batteries for flash lights, a small radio, and candles (be careful of fire). I've never needed sandbags, but they are useful-- I have heard of people filling up trash bags with water as replacement. If you run out of service you can change your voicemail so that people trying to contact you can be updated. Fill up a tub with water prior and fill gallon bags with water as well. However, please evacuate if you can!

We've were hit by hurricane Rita, Ike, a few tropical storms, then Harvey. Rita was a wind event. Trees down for miles and miles. Ike was a storm surge event that flooded numerous cities around our area. Harvey was a rain event with 60 plus inches falling in my city. Our home didn't flood until they opened the dam. There are soooo many factors to consider, other than hurricane wind mph. Tornadoes, loss of electric, banks closed, trees down, flooding, cars flooding, gas shortage, etc...I could write a dam book, been through so many of these.
Most of the people in the Carolinas have already came to Georgia and are in Atlanta. I live in GA but I hope everyone is safe

I grew up in Camp Lejeune North Carolina which is Onslow County in Jacksonville and the Marine Corps Air Station in New River is there as well. Please pray for all the potential victims but don't forget about our Marines that are stationed right there at Ground Zero. They are Fighters though and you had better believe they'll be the First Responders to go out there and help people. That was my childhood home for 15 years and I miss it every day.

When I lived in Carolina Beach, I always stayed up to Cat 3 storms, we were on the third floor and someone needed to watch the property, protect against looting afterward, etc. Others took the cars inland. But if a Cat 2 is going to last 4 times as long as normal, it's worse than a Cat 4. The longer the rain and winds stay, the deadlier it gets. I learned the hard way when a storm went out, turned back inland and almost ripped the roof off my 3rd floor apartment. We were huddled in a stairwell on the 2nd floor and getting whipped with foliage and sand. Florence will be a 12 HOUR STORM+ literally sitting and spinning. It takes my breath away, I can't imagine it. I respect people's decisions but I do hope they are educated decisions, that everyone is getting the word on how long this storm will sit there. BTW after Fran, my building was demolished as the surge flattended the end of the island, none of the buildings could be recovered. Fran was fast. There's an inland lake that just fills up and joins the ocean, after that the ocean crosses west into the inlets. Takes only 6 feet to cover most of Carolina Beach. GTFO NOW

I rode out hurricane Harvey in Corpus Christi Tx because I didn't have the money or a reliable car. Although the wind wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, it was scary at times, especially when the big tree in our front yard fell, ( missed the house!) The rain was nonstop. Then the power went out, that's when the fun started. The humidity was unbearable, it took 4 days for a crew to restore power to the neighborhood, but I still didn't have power because our breaker box got ripped off by a leaning post. What I'm trying to say is, if you can evacuate, do so, but if you can't, your chances of surviving are fair, depending on how far away you are from the center of the storm. I was 40 miles away. And it wasn't so bad. So good luck, and don't feel like you won't survive, with a little luck you'll be OK.
