Hi Van, I really appreciated the more educated take on the Hmong traditions. My partner is a Vietnamese Hmong from the north, and I am closely engaged with many people from the northern Hmong communities, who have in the past received a lot of negative judgment from the Kinh people. They can often be looked at as less due to their perceived outdated backward ways and rougher lifestyle, but there's obviously a lot more to their culture, so it's nice that you touched on this a little in your video. You filmed it very respectfully, which was great to see.

Hi Van Vu..., "Love Market" "Want to get married ?" Only kidding... * As I learn new cultures in foreign countries..., this one... caught me by surprise ! * Van Vu ..., you are bright, intelligent, and attractive... Living in Vietnam and on a ( working cattle ranch ) in America..., would undoubtedly be different... * Although..., when I pass away..., you would be..., one very ( rich ) and a beautiful young lady in Vietnam and or the United States... * Excellent video and very informative, and thank you for sharing the video... I do ( love ) your Vietnamese culture and traditions, and your parents... * "Yes..., you are bright, intelligent and attractive... Mike in Montana :)

In the future, please pronounce H'Mong as Mong (H is silent). As a Hmong person from the US, I also agree that this "tradition" needs to stop. This "tradition" is unacceptable in the US and should be treated the same in any other countries. On another note, you look beautiful in Hmong clothes. Keep up the great videos!

I remember we also got this tradition somewhere in China for a particular ethnics. I'm surprised by the "sold to China" scenario. If it's true, I feel very sorry for that. I'm Chinese and I met two excellent Vietnamese students here in Shanghai. They are from decent family and got scholarship, richer than me.. That's my only impression to Vietnamese.

Interesting. I live in Fresno, California, home to one of the largest Hmong populations in the United States. Bride kidnapping isn't a thing here, as far as I know, but I'm on the outside looking in, so to speak. Their New Year's celebrations last a week and the food is great. Gimme some more of those dumplings, with some moc chau to wash it down! Yum!

@@shinyeee1709 There's plenty of things considered illegal in the US that still happen, especially culturally, like female circumcision. When you have the cultural and language barrier to hide behind it makes it easier for these things to still happen.

Good research and clarification on the tradition of bride kidnapping. It has always been falsely misunderstood by outsiders as an outright kidnapping when in fact it is more consensual and merely an act to gain face and value as a prized bride 👍
More often than not the groom and bride to be have known each other for years and are in fact love birds. In most cases they have even decided and agreed upon the day and time of the fateful event. In same cases though rare a girl may be bride kidnapped with little or no knowledge of the event mostly because she never intended or agreed to be married to the said groom (guy) or hardly knows him. Additionally this is one way the potential groom (guy) can acquire a wife of whom he does not know have little contact with or simply is just in love with. That said it is not an automatic marriage as her refusal and/or during and at the wedding negotiation he can just simply be turned down at which point he can potentially be fined thus losing face. This does and can happen depending on the couple's acquaintances and the overall negotiation by the elders.
This practice is no longer observed in the West due to adherence of laws and a more assimilated lifestyle and at minimal in SE Asia.
The Ha-mung pronunciation is always cringy 😵 Almost as cringy as the Mung one 😬
Fun fact concluded by various researchers found that the 'Love Market' originated as an opportunistic economic ploy orchestrated by the local authorities to exploit the general populous.

This video is so interesting, never before been told by anyone that there is bride kidnapping practice in Hmong culture. Though this practise is no longer practical, it's nice to see the Hmong people are a very closely knit community, thus this will enable them to preserve most of their traditions,.
You did well to do a lot of research for facts. Keep it up.
