    Interesting that you used Fatal Fury Wild Ambition as an example of dodging fireballs in a 3D environment considering that, well, you could also do that in the 2D games with the plane system. 2D and 3D Fatal Fury deals with fireballs in the same way really.

      @@AirLancerthe plane system in the original Fatal Fury is kind of weird because it depends if the opponent switched planes. Considering the original FF was made by the same people who developed the first Street Fighter and how there weren't many one to one fighters it seems it was made in order to differentiate from SF
      In the next Fatal Fury games the plane system is performed manually and I think it brings some strategy to the gameplay, making it easier to dodge some attacks and in FF3 and Real Bout they even included an extra foreground plane, but it seems SNK realized the side-step dodge and roll evasion worked better at differentiate their games from other fighters
      I don't think City of the Wolves will bring back the plane system, I just hope it plays exactly like Mark of the Wolves

And it is top tier because not only is the gameplay easy to grasp for newcomers, but it also is completely made up of infamous early 2000s anime tropes. Honestly, I think these games turned out a lot better than some of the other 3D fighters I've played from that era and the era before. I enjoyed 3D MK, KoF MI2 was great fun, and I loved Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha as well. One of the issues I did have with those is that I felt like they didn't truly embrace 3D the same way a Tekken, Soul Calibur, VF, or DOA did. Those games originated in 3D whereas KoF MI2, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, Final Fight Revenge, etc tried to just basically copy and paste 2D mechanics into a 3D space and it came with mixed results. I actually was afraid of Akuma and Geese being in Tekken for the same reason, but they finally got them right for the most part. I think "playing it safe" might have been the real flaw to these games. Despite that, I enjoyed my time with them and still will play them to this day.

      The only thing I don't like about KoF XIII is the new artstyle that SNK adopted for the game. For some reason characters like Ralf, Clark and Ryo are much more muscular than in previous games, Ryo and Robert look more like they did in the original Art of Fighting. It seems like SNK wanted the game to be not only a new KoF, but also making references to their other fighting game franchises due to the inclusion of more obscure Fatal Fury characters like Hwa Jai and Raiden, Terry returning to his classic appearance and including his Real Bout 2 stage
      Still, the game has some of the best and most fluid sprite work made by SNK, but I still believe Mark of the Wolves has the best art direction and animation, especially considering it was made with the Neo-Geo hardware

    • @emperormegaman3856
      @emperormegaman3856 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Pablocasas5909 some characters like Ryo and Robert using their older designs was probably a deliberate nostalgia choice the designb,but as for the characters body builds, I've heard that it's because the method used for Kof XIII (and XII, which was just half - finished XIII) while beautiful, was quite time consuming, so they had to use a few characters models rather than crafting a different one for each character. Hence some looking bigger or slimmer than they should. (most notably, Ralph and Clark actually just have the same body.) some characters also have simpler outfits than usual (like Iori, Vice, Mature wearing simpler normal suit)

  • @Salmacis32
    @Salmacis32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    One of the most tragic things about this is that despite how much more expensive 2d titles can often get, the initial amount of work needed to start a 3d franchise is just far in away more expensive and time consuming to the point where there isn't a whole lot of incentive to push a new IP through the trials necessary to get to even the lengths of Bloody Roar. Even now the gaming industry as it were is still pretty poisonous to the kind of love and attention needed to push out the kind of quality a good fighting game deserves while being ok with the fact that it will most likely not be a return on investment.
    It's sad to see because there are a lot of really awesome indie 2d titles blowing up with tons and love and care put into them, but it's still pretty unrealistic to expect something on that scale for 3d right now and it sucks. I'm hopeful we'll get there someday, though, the genre desperately needs smaller creators to keep pushing the bar given how unwilling the big boys are.

    • @antonsimmons8519
      @antonsimmons8519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's also the significant problem that a large portion of fighting-gamers just flat-out don't like the 3d aspect, whether the game is otherwise good or even great. Turning 2d IPs into 3d ones is likely to piss off too many of an IP's fans for it to be successful, really, so new 3d fighters need to be new IPs. Problem with that is, indie studios tend not to have the raw resources available to feasibly make a solid 3d fighter, so for the time being...Tekken, SC, VF...DoA I GUESS lol. And that's it.

      @@antonsimmons8519 I agree that community pushback is a common stopgap for that kind of thing, it sort of builds upon that unwillingness to deviate from a working formula that tends to turn companies off from risks like that. I have definitely seen some vocal critics of such, both reasonable and not alike, but I fear laying too much of the blame on the fgc itself knowing that a lot of that kind of thing tends to stem from a vocal minority.

    This was a great topic. I don't really have a foot in the race because while technically my first foray into 2D fighting games was Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix back in the arcade, my proper introduction to fighting games was 3D from the start with Tekken 2 and I was hooked on 3D Fighters to the point that it was very hard for me to get into 2D fighters because I wasn't used to the confined movement that 2D's formula is built-on compared to 3D. Needless to say, I was very interested in seeing 2D fighting games transition into 3D and though it was a ROUGH ride, I think that was bound to happen because the 5th and 6th generation was about experimenting and seeing what worked and didn't work and mistakes were bound to be made.
    I mainly clicked on the video to hear what you thought of the King of Fighters Maximum Impact series. I can't comment on the first one since I haven't played it but I played the hell out of the Maximum Impact 2 back in the day when I was a teen. I can acknowledge that compared to the other 3D Fighters at the time like Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, and Dead or Alive 3 but what it lacked in fluid motion, it made up for with tons of replay value. It probably helps though that when I discovered the game, I wasn't aware of what KOF was LOL So unlocking all those characters was a treat because I didn't know just who would be next. I can also admit that the character designs were very... Different but I gotta admit, they certainly stood out lol. Overall, it's probably nostalgia that makes me like this game but I think it's a shame they didn't continue with the 3D games after Regulation A. I mean technology has advanced and I'm sure the developers are more familiar with 3D mechanics or if not, they could hire someone who does and I mean, how cool would it be if we got one more 3D KOF game? I'd be all over it haha
    As for Samurai Shodown Sen, it's so sad that it didn't do as well because presentation-wise, it was pretty solid from what I've seen. I haven't played the game because at the time I didn't have a Xbox 360 but from what I've heard, it played pretty janky and I can believe it after watching plenty of gameplay videos for it where it looked like the player was struggling a bit to navigate the battlefield. Again, such a shame and I would've loved to see them try one more time and make a 3D Samurai Shodown with the knowledge and experience that 3D Fighting mechanics have now.
    What you said towars the end on how these game companies are better off sticking to what they know and the audience they have built because of the format of games they made, I don't disagree with that but I think it's kinda sad that it has to be that way for the safety of the developer because part of what made the 5th and 6th generations of console gaming so fun was all the experimenting and risks being done. Even if the payoff wasn't always successful, it was interesting to try new things and maybe even get a few laugh fits from some of the absurdity that ensued in some of those games lol.

      As fun as they are, I struggle to see a successful future for MK if it stayed 3D.
      MK9 and X had long competitive scenes, and while the 3D games did as well, I think it's fair to say that they weren't as popular in the MK scene as the ones like UMK3, 9, and X.

    • @Melkac
      @Melkac 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@somethingsomething9006 I think customers like the simplicity of 2D fighters. You just want to move in two directions and bash all buttons trying to kick your friend's ass, when there's a whole new dimension to take into consideration it makes things too complicated for some people (me, someone who's been experiencing the 3D space in games since my childhood...has trouble with 3D fighters like Tekken).
      And then there's the competitive side, who prefer to play a tried and true match between two people without too many gimmicks, no stage hazards, no ring outs, nothing, just who's the best at pressing buttons.
      And at the end of the day, MK is a mostly casual fighting game. The competitive scene isn't taken as seriously as some other games.
      So in a way, there is no space for 3D fighting games besides Tekken, and it's because it has refused to change unlike its competitors. If it had gone fully 2D like the others, there would truly be no space for 3D fighting games in the industry.

      You're acting as if NRS cares about the games' longevity. They already pump out FGs triple as fast as other FG studios and the audiences immediately jump ship from one to the other.
      Mortal Kombat has always been an FG for casuals. It only sells because of its violence and branding. There's a reason no one ever buys these games for their mechanics but just to see how much more disgusting the finishers can get. And it's why they're only getting more and more gruesome, no matter how much more meaningless that makes the violence itself, or how much the staff on-board have to suffer (no game should ever give someone PTSD).
      In other words, they can switch up the gameplay fine - everyone is going to eat it up anyway. But they won't because they have no reason to put more effort when they can just do the same exact thing but uglier.

      @@Melkac I find 3D fighters to be far easier to play than 2D fighters. Strings reduce the execution requirement since the majority of moves are going to consist of strings, it's easy for people to just press P,P,P,K, or mash LK,RK in Tekken to get decent damage. I can also argue 2D fighters having a bigger emphasis on neutral, and the air can be difficult.

    I'm not capable of adding much of value to this discussion, i just want to share the existence of a game by name of Kya: Dark Lineage which is a platformer-like adventure for PS2, but the combat system is much more akin to that of a fighter.
    Stuff like punches and kicks and grabs and dodges, but the dodges come in two different varieties (roll > forward and backward, quickstep - sideways).
    And later on you can unlock a move that allows you to jump on top of, or over an enemy.
    Depending on positioning, grabs also have different effects (from the side > digging elbow and knee into the enemy, from the front > pulling them over and kicking them backwards, from behind > using them as a meat shield or flail against other enemies)
    The combos themselves can get quite elaborate too, for a 3D platformer type game at least.
    I know this doesn't have the most bearing of this video, but seeing as the comments here can attract the attention of people more knowledgeable or interested in fighting games, i hope it's something fun and interesting for them to further want to look into.
    And if that happens, i hope that it may be able to add something further into this discussion.
