- How to Make 2 Part Molds using Oyumaru, No Resin DIY Casting
It is so frustrating when an action figure doesn’t come with enough weapons (or worse, the weapons are a non removable, molded part of the holster). Or how about when your Pokemon Ash figure only has one standard Pokeball? Well, now you can learn how to duplicate your existing small accessories to give to your other figures a larger weapon arsenal or with a bit of paint, Ash can finally upgrade to Great or Ultra Balls.
This video will explain how to use Oyumaru to make one part and two part clay push molds that can be filled with your choice of epoxy based clay. After the items are removed from the mold, they can be sanded and painted.
The materials I’ll be using in this DIY 2 Part Mold Making tutorial are:
-a pot to heat water in
-thermometer: amzn.to/2rNNsPo (Amazon affiliate link)
-2 Part epoxy clay: I’m using Apoxie sculpt: amzn.to/2qTBfZh (Amazon affiliate link), but you can use other brands like Milliput too: amzn.to/2rQXXAw (Amazon affiliate link),
-For making the molds, I use this version of Oyumaru: amzn.to/2rryq1w (Amazon affiliate link) Or you could get a two pack of Oyumaru: amzn.to/2pUfHe1 (Amazon affiliate link)
The Instructions I was given for using Oyumaru are:
Heat Oyumaru for 3 minutes in hot water (176 degrees F or 80 degrees C)
Wipe Oyumaru dry with paper towel
Make mold and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before using
The items I used in the mold in the video are Hasbro’s Marvel Legend’s Deadpool’s pistols and Tomy’s Pokemon Ash Pokeball, but you can use whatever small accessories you want.

Another impressive vid as always . As an alternative mold making product , take a look at

You melt in in a microwave before use, and afterwards pour over the item you want to make a mold of.

Zubbie unfortunately I have not used it yet. But it is sold at the craft store in my area. I wanted to run through my supply of amazing mold putty, and oomoo 25 that I recently purchased. And video showed up in my subscriptions this morning of a craft artist using it. I will send you the link.
LOL I just noticed that you mentioned dollar tree gloves. I picked up a pair 2 weeks ago and have not used them yet. Now I know the quality lol
This is basically the same thing as Blue Stuff. You can buy it on Amazon. Here's a tip: Cut the bars into cubes and they will soften faster. You can also use any 2 part epoxy putty to make your duplicates. It doesn't have to be the expensive artsy kind.

where the hell was this stuff in the 90s when me and my gamming buddies were in to kit bashing miniatures. we could have save a tone of money by just making copies of the original ones and remanufacture parts that got broke or lost.

I've seen other trying this and I am amazed with this! There are parts I want to mod and re'create. Like weapons for toys that don't fit other toys or figures and easily mold, recast and mod then mold and recast again.

I know it has been a few years since you posted this video. But if you ever need to translate Japanese Google's lens app translates things very well. I'm pretty sure it can be downloaded onto all Android phones but comes stock on Google phones. It has saved my life building Japanese model cars.

For larger projects I strongly recommend composimold. Pretty much exactly like this but you microwave it and you can get it in large quantities.

Very informative! You don't see many videos regarding this matter. I've been trying to find videos to duplicate bits for warhammer, and not butcher them and most of the molds are either off or too brittle. Also great you put the links to the Japanese mold! I think because it's so long, my video editing software decided it would be fun to mess with me by randomly flipping clips upside down, deleting tracks, and other really weird stuff. Or maybe my laptop is to blame. I think I got all fixed though.

That's a great use for this! That way you don't have to sacrifice the guns your figures came with for gluing on a weapon rack.

If you buy boxes, (typically 100 in a box), you can buy them in varying sizes, S, M and L, I'd guess those are L which the filling stations and shops sell in smaller packets as a one size fits all.
You can select between Latex, (which fit really closely but fall apart near solvent), or Nitrile which aren't as flexible for fit but harder wearing.

I know this is a old video but I do have some spare tips for you.
Tip 1: use Blue Stuff by Green Stuff World. It's the same thing as that Japanese product.
Tip 2: cut the mold sticks up in small cubes because it softens faster.
Tip 3: form the first mold half and let it cure up. Than once it has cured soften up the rest of you mold material and press it against the cured half of the mold. It helps a bit whenvits time to pull the mold apart.

Do you think this would work for making a mould of a leg and hoof of a horse model? I have the original horse and also a broken one so I thought I would attempt to make a mould of the intact limb and use wire to reinforce the join after I cast the leg? I decided that I will go ahead and try this as I have everything I need and I will reinforce the join as I said with wire superglue and baking soda for a good hard join. I think I will use milliput. I have a couple of bags of thermoplastic beads which I found were cheaper to buy.
Do u have alternatives instead of using epoxy clay?? those are stiff and easy to break
So this is the Japanese version of 'Blue Stuff'? They seem the same to me. Is it possible to cast in certain colours? I wanted to cast some weapons in gold but without painting them, and I've been having a hell of a time with resin colouring.

I really want to make a Logan movie figure but I don't have any other wolverine figure and that means No claws to use for my custom :c cant find any video of how to make them. Any advice Zubbie?
I haven't tried making claws, but I've had a couple of people mention to me that they've made metal Wolverine claws out of bobby pins. I tried cutting my bobby pins myself, but it didn't go so well. I either need stronger hands or better tools, but you'd probably have better luck!

I like the Oyumaru. Very inexpensive and I really like that it is reusable.
I'm really impressed with it! It's easy to use and if you mess up, just throw it back in the water to reheat it.
this was comparatively very easy process u hv shown here Zubbie !!! loved it and thanks for sharing my Hawkeye :) btw, hv u tried re producing any marvel legends head sculpt with it. pls try it if u can, that will be amazing !!! extra head, hand, peg joints always helps customizers :D
That's so funny you mention head sculpts! I've already picked out some to giving it a try. I think it should work, as long as I don't sand off the nose or something. xD

Earlier this year I tried making a two-part mold with this and for some weird reason the second part of the mold completely fused with the opposite mold. Does that mean I have to put something on top like oil or water to prevent it from sticking?
I didn't put anything on top of either half of my mold to prevent sticking. That's really strange they stuck together for you. The only thing I can think of why that may have happened is the second half was still really hot when the two were joined and melted the first half a bit. Maybe you'd have better luck if the second half cools down a bit longer before placing it on top of the first? Hope that helps! 🙂
Would this work with resins? I would like to make a 2 part mold to use with a resin which i would only need to use a few times and i don't want to go out and buy mold making kit which would work out way more expensive (if i make a poor mold)

i didnt use the exact product you linked but i tried it with a different one and man i had to be quick with setting up the mold cause i had like a minute to work with the product then it get really hard really fast . have you had a problem with this ?
I haven't tried other products, but I didn't have a problem with this one hardening up too quickly. I would say it stayed soft for at least 2 minutes.
Video idea: Have you ever considered making Web Wings (or Armpit Webs) for Marvel Legends Spider-Man out of cloth or thin plastic? Just an idea. Love your channel! :D

I'm just going to use cheap acrylic craft paint, but any acrylic paint should be fine.

Can I use resin (EasyCast or FastCast) instead of the epoxy clay? I cant find any info about that. Thanks!
Yes you can. I use this stuff with UV resin because composimold and remelt (2 reusable mold makers for resin) kept melting under the UV light.

Other people have mentioned that the Oyumaru is similar to a product called Blue Stuff so that should work too. Silicone also works well for making molds, but you cannot reuse it. The important thing is that the product you use to make the mold needs to remain flexible so you can remove the items from it.
Is there other colors for apoxie clay like brown or gun-metal color?
Or better question when I make that ball off apoxie clay and decide to dip it in paint then put it in the cast will it be ruined?
How strong does the clay dry ,,,like resin? Or Does it break easy??
The Apoxie Sculpt I used in this video is stronger than a lot of types of clay, but it can still be carved easily. However, I don't think it is as strong as resin.

Have you looked into making silicone molds and using liquid plastic for casting?
The silicone I saw at the store was not reusable and it would become kinda pricey if you want to make a bunch of different molds. I don't think I've heard of liquid plastic though. Are there any particular brands of it that you've tried or heard about?
The silicone can't be reused to make new molds, but you can use it to make the same things multiple times (especially if you use mold release spray). I've not been able to try any of them, yet, as I'm on a very thin budget, but I've seen a lot of instructional videos, here, on YT, and most tend to favor Oomoo silicone, and Polytek Easyflo 60 plastic. One more question, can you use polymer clay to fill the mold?
Sure! The molds have some flexibility to them, but I would still use some kind of mold release to help get the polymer clay back out of the molds without distorting your clay. You can't bake while the clay is still in the molds, but that's the only drawback I can think of.
Very cool! Have you ever heard of Plasti-make? Similar product, I wouldn't have thought to use it for mold casting. I will now!
I haven't tried Plasti-make, but I've tried Instamorph, which I think is similar with little plastic pellets. I didn't have much luck with making anything out of it though.

Por mi experiencia para conseguir resultados aceptables es mejor hacer primero la cara inferior y cuando seque esta añadirle la cara superior. Yo utilizo masilla epoxid del proveedor asiático por 1,20 euros y el resultado es el mismo que con masillas mejores o más caras.

I saw a similar technique but they used glue gun sticks, also so do the scoops you use come with the apoxie scuplt
No scoops are included, but that would have been a good idea. The scoops I use are just part of a teaspoon set from the dollar store.

Does the resin feel like action figure plastic?
The epoxy I was using in this video and resin feel different than action figure plastic. Also, I would say the plastic action figures are made from is stronger and has more flexibility before it breaks, versus epoxy and resin.

This has probably been asked to death before so sorry beforehand. Can someone tell me if you buy 2 or 3 packs and them combine em while they are hot to make larger parts say like a throne for 6 inch figures etc?

Yes, it does do a good job capturing detail. And if you're not happy with how a particular mold came out, it's easy to throw it back in the pot to melt it down and try again.

It baffles me that Americans don't own electric kettles.
Americans by and large don't drink tea, so we have less need to have a special kettle solely for boiling water.
I do drink tea often...but I just keep a teapot on the stove on a back burner. No need to take up extra space and spend extra money on a glorified teapot.

You gotta just keep trying! My first attempts didn't turn out as well as I wanted either.
I know this may seem like an odd thing to suggest, but if you haven't tried it yet, you should try Oogoo. Basically, it's a DIY Sugru that's a mix of clear silicone (from the hardware store) and corn starch that can be made into sort of a moldible and flexible putty. You can even color it by adding in acrylic paint while you're mixing everything. May be useful for a future project.
