On the 11th June, 323 BC, Alexander the Great passed away. In his lifetime, he had conquered the superpower of the time and formed the greatest empire yet seen. His life is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating in history. Yet following his death, Alexander’s body became a continuing source of war, intrigue and mystery.
His body and tomb were lost, yet the legend lives on and historians are still trying to uncover clues to their whereabouts. But how did this all come about? In this two-part documentary, we shall unravel the history surrounding Alexander’s tomb and attempt to answer this question. This is the story behind Alexander’s body and his tomb, of its importance for the Diadochi and the Ptolemies, for the Romans and the Christians.

But they in some ways benefitted. They would still be satraps or almost Kings as well before maybe don't know or mayne they would go to a new expedition and new battle as generals don't know. Alexander would definitely make new expedition.

Living in the states, it reminds me of Abraham Lincoln’s famed funeral train, which drew millions from the countryside just to see the train bearing his body. The train traveled from DC to Springfield IL over three weeks, a journey of more than 1,600 miles at an (intentionally somber) top speed of 20 mph, before burying Lincoln in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, where his mausoleum is adorned by bronzes and fine stone sculptures.

Yes he was a great strategist but he lacked wisdom which comes with age. Not all victories of Alexander involved warfare.
Many cities welcomed him as a liberator others proclaimed him a pharaoh which boosted his ego even more! haha
His adrenalin was his driving force but he was also schooled on the classics and believed it was his destiny to rule and conquer

Interesting fact: There is still a Greek community in Alexandria of Egypt since the time of Alexander the Great. Some Greeks never left.

If Alexander didn't decompose it is possible he was only in a coma and not dead. The circumstances of his death lead many to suspect poisoning which could have caused such a coma. If Alexander died by embalming that is tragic!

I'm (and several notable members of the archeological community) fairly certain that the mausoleum in Alexandria that contained his coffin likely fell into the sea after multiple earthquakes. Alexandria's current coastline is nowhere near the same as it was during the reign of Ptolemy, having been constantly deformed and morphed by geology. Whether the body of Alexander was still INSIDE the tomb at the time of the collapse is another question.

She told me that in the streets there were people digging everywhere and she was told they were trying to find Alexanders tomb, this always got me interested in his tomb!

Alexander's tomb has already been found since 1989, in Oasis Siwa, south-west of Alexandria.
If you want to see it, you need to travel there.
I thought the tomb was never found. I have watched various documentaries about the mystery and they still have never found the tomb or the body.

Fun Facts:
In some accounts, Alexander named Perdiccas as his heir. However Perdiccas was only intended as an interim ruler.
The commander of the Macedonian funeral cart escort, Arrhidaeus, had likely been in cahoots with Ptolemy for some time.
At the same time as Ptolemy emphasised (and most certainly exaggerated) his closeness to Alexander in his account of Alexander's campaign (that survives to us in Arrian's Anabasis), he was sure to portray Perdiccas in as negative a light as possible. This is a main reason why Perdiccas' name is unfairly washed over in many history books today.
CRAZY THEORY: There is an interesting, albeit far-fetched theory that Alexander was not dead but actually had fallen into a comatose state on the 11th June 323 BC! It would explain why his body had not decayed after many days!
It is more likely however that the whole story Alexander's body had not rotted is a later fictional story to help further portray Alexander as this almost-divine figure!
No details of Alexander’s primary tomb in Alexandria survive but we can assume it was designed to be very notable. Ptolemy had likely been inspired by the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus that he had seen on his travels with Alexander. It is not far-fetched to suggest Alexander's tomb was equally awe-inspiring in design.
To Alexander's generals - and more importantly, his Macedonian soldiers - Alexander was much more than a mere mortal. They believed that following his death Alexander had ascended to take his place among the gods. Their belief of a divine Alexander is why the carriage was constructed as a temple.
Whether Ptolemy IV Philopator used Alexander’s original tomb as the basis for the Soma or constructed it somewhere else in Alexandria is unclear, but the latter is more likely.
Both Augustus and Hadrian visited Alexander’s body. Is possible that upon viewing Alexander’s tomb, both wished to be buried in tombs similar in shape to that of Alexander - hence why it is possible the Soma was circular-shaped.

Ptolemy is a really dirty player. How on Earth did he secure Egypt for himself whilst other Macedonian characters fought amongst themselves for much smaller holdings?
He started building his power base there, even before Alexander passed away.
Maybe the dirty player was not Ptolemy after all, but the rest Macedonian characters who wanted to undermine Alexander's legacy, and fought for to keep Alexander's stuff for themselves.
I think Ptolemy was a clever and shrewd operator. He did well to survive all those battles and was wise enough to quit while Alexander was slipping in to paranoia and alcoholism in the east. He built a power base for himself and didn't over-extend or take big risks on things like internal squabbles among the first Diadochi. He was pro-active in the fallout but didn't leave his power base or take armies too far away from it to compete for the rest of Alexander's 'empire'. His flex was always economical.
Might makes right plus diplomatic smarts. The same reason Rome succeeded
He was the smartest of all the surviving Generals. He picked Egypt because it was easier to defend, had a relatively easy populace to rule over ( civil war was unlikely) and he picked his alliances with great care.

I was born in Greek Macedonia to a Greek mother of Roman origin and
a Macedonian father. Alex rode his horse into my birthplace twice to recruit warriors
for his army. I followed his trail along the Anatolian coast and saw the drums of his army still being used at weddings in a remote mountaintop village in northern Greece.
Day one in grade one, they teach you about Alexander. Apparently, he taught Macedonians only to fight to the death as anything less was not worth it. But then he said to instantly kill anyone who insults you, regardless of the consequences.
Ptolemy wanted the body to legitimize his rule in Egypt, where bodies were super important. I like to think he knew that the Empire wasn't going to last and rushed out to call Dibs on the most valuable part of it, but to make himself more acceptable to the Egyptians he needed Alexander's body.
He's a fun character.
When he was asked who should succeed him, Alexander said, “the strongest”

I am speculating, that the future Roman emperor Octavian (Augustus) in his "mopping up" operation in Alexandria, Egypt had secretly absconded with the body of the Macedonian King and transported it back to Italy in some undisclosed location. Another "feather in his cap" to celebrate his primacy over the "known world."

If you go to the national museum in Istanbul (Constantinople) there are alot of amazing things. It is one of the best museums in the world. The Ottoman Empire (defeated in WW1) was extremely wealthy and powerful for a long time. The emperors had quite a collection of valuable historical items. One wing is filled with ancient Greek tombs. They are very impressive! One of them is said to be the tomb of Alexander. This one is a truly stunning work of art. It is amazing. No one contests that the tombs of his generals are those of his generals. But, because of myth they refuse to believe that the one which is such a work of art it is of unimaginable cost to be Alexander's. Personally, having seen them. I am willing to accept it as Alexander's tomb. It seems more reasonable to me than the myth.

The early Islamic I don't know if I believe it to be 100% real, but probably overall yes. The Greek stuff however is very hard to fake. Those tombs are thousands of pounds of innately carved marble and it is too easy to look at them and tell authenticity. There are other buildings there also that I didn't have time to see. If you go to Istanbul and haven't before; the city is full of impressive things. I wouldn't leave though without seeing the walls of Constantinople (no guards, you can climb them!!!! I did almost get myself killed running through unlit tower staircases that ended up having a section out. dangerous but was fun as hell). Also the Hagia Sophia. The way it was built, it won't last much longer. It could collapse in a day or in 20 years, engineers aren't sure; but they can't afford to repair it. It likely won't make it to the end of my lifetime, so I'm glad I fit that one in.

There was a tomb found in Alexandria last month while workers were working on a building. Some suspect that it is Alexander's tomb.

Well they opened it recently, and even if it was Alexander (which is doubtful), the bodies inside were so badly decayed that there's currently no way to be certain. Sewage had apperantly leaked into the Sarcophagus which caused the bodies inside to be severely damaged and filled with literal shit.

Alexander the Great, quite possibly the world’s greatest conqueror of all time.
I got interested in him after I saw the film “Alexander” in the early 2000’s. He lived an interesting life. From there I graduated towards the Spartans. Greece (and the states before it) has a history almost second to none in the Ancient World.
All great men of history, yes. Because I researched Alexander the Great, I just included him here.
Genghis we learned at school, although they mostly taught us about the Westernised conquerors of history for some reason.

It was taken to Constantinople in the 6th century, and later gifted to Norse explorers by a later Emperor, who tricked them into choosing one thing from his treasury. The Horsemen though the coffin held something of value, and swore to not open it until they returned to their homeland. When they returned and opened it all they say were bones, and refusing to accept that they were tricked, kept it. It eventually found its way on a ship to Greenland, but was blown off course and ended up on the North American Eastern Seaboard, further south from Vinland. The ship it was on the beached and used as shelter until a hole in the ground swallowed the ship and coffin. Today this hole is known as something of a legend in North America as a hole where treasure can be found. There are some accounts of what appears to be a longship down there. Whatbecame of the Vikings on the ship is unknown, but it is attested in local Native American legends that a groups of strangers very different from them became great chieftens and warriors of their tribe and led them to new conquests, and in their customs after death were cremated in canoes with all their belongings.
Atleast that's my theory backed by no evidence.

All those not killed in the fighting, he sold into slavery, then burnt the city to the ground as an example to the other Greek states. There were no further rebellions during Alexander's lifetime. is this make Great? i think no.

Maybe his body hadn't decayed because he didn't die when they thought he did? There are many, many stories of people being considered dead, who woke up days later; even in Victorian times people were buried with a bell above their grave so they can ring it if they woke up! So he may have just fallen into a coma and died days after, or even worse - he may have died during the embalmment? Back in those days medicine men used to think someone is dead because they are not breathing not because their heart has stopped. Imagine all of these people bickering over his body, and he just randomly wakes up and sees them fighting over his corpse! He would have been so angry, I reckon!

I saw a documentary a couple few years ago where a couple of guys took up the challenge of finding what happened to the Cadaver of Alexander and after much sleuthing believe they found it hidden in the tomb of a Saint in some chapel in Venice. The Sun Burst Seal of the Macedonian Kings is on this obscure Saints tomb.
