I think Swordtail was just trying to look more confident than he felt for the sake of keeping the group’s hopes high in finding Luna and making a change to the continent. And then when Sundew joined the party, who was way more experienced than Swordtail, he wanted to do everything he could to impress her with eagerness. But ultimately he tried a little too hard and looked like a fool a little, but that didn’t stop him from trying anyway in the slightest. I think he simply had a lot of faith that Sundew would make all the right calls for the group and followed her like a scout follows a leader.
Up until Luna’s book he really was a two dimensional character but when we saw flashbacks in Luna’s book, that’s when I really started appreciating his character.
I personally thought that it was crazy and weird that he was more upset about losing Luna than HIS SISTER! I do agree with Sundew taking his role and I love your videos so much!
I find this sooooooo relatable! I feel like the 3rd arc was very very rushed. The writing n the second and third arc is soooo different. I don’t think I’m lying when I say the third arc is my least favorite arc. So I love how someone else thinks the same way as me.

I personally think Tui was just stressed by a lot of people wanting books that are good as her first ten. I mean like she probably rushed her books and tried to get them done faster, not better. So, she spent way less time on side characters, focusing more on the actual plot then on the dragons involved in it.
I’ve never read the 3rd arc, and it’s because I hear so much of this about it! A lot of people say they enjoyed the 3rd arc, but idk. Thank you so so much Cyprus for being honest in this video, but not butchering Tui’s whole thing she made!

I always hated how he appeared in the other books: shallow . . . at least before we saw how Luna saw him: funny, quirky, impulsive in a cute sorta way. Swordtail is probably one of my tops from the 3rd arc and probably the only one who has the title of favorite introduced in arc 3 in my book. I personally wish Swordtail was the pov for book 11 but instead we got the worst protagonist of wings of fire(in my opinion). Swordtail is a wasted character and if Tui does make a 4th arc i hope for Swordtail to get more focus. I feel like an entire arc could be made just from tying lose ends such as Peril and Sky's reunion or what happened to Sora.

I am a book writer myself and indeed he did have a bit of a run down when Luna left I was expecting him to go a bit crazy about it but no he was worried but didn’t have the reaction I was thinking and hopping for.🦋

I agree that Sundew did kinda replace him. I also didn’t really like Swordtail that much until I read The Flames of Hope, and honestly, I kinda love him now. I like him more than Blue, that’s for sure. But yes, Swordtail was put to the side and wasn’t given much character development, unlike Kinkajou, who’s my favorite side character.
I really really like Swordtail, in book 11 I loved him but it felt like he got thrown off to the sidelines because they really didn’t know what to do with him. I hate how he wasn’t book 15’s protagonist because he could have gotten some incredible development and he could have actually been taken seriously. I get it’d be hard to tie that to the characters on Pyrrhia but I feel like Tui could have made it work. Edit: also I despise how he didn’t play a huge role as a Chrysalis member. They really should have done more with that

this is why book 15 fell on its face at the end (the last act specifically with cotton mouth and lizard) **spoilers ofc** they are introduced so late we don’t get to learn too much about them, so we don’t quite have a reason to hate cottonmouth and love lizard aside from what’s shown which isn’t a lot, we don’t delve deep into them, all we know about lizard is that she never got a chance at life because of cottonmouth, and that cottonmouth caused the scorching, but we don’t learn enough about them for this to matter. we never get to see what lizard missed out on or think about it, and we don’t learn enough about cottonmouth for him to truly be hateable. he never really,,, did anything that made me want him to die? aside from the scorching which we *barely* see the actual effects of aside from the dragons getting angry, we don’t feel like he did something bad and that the dragons did something good, just that they both did something bad, we don’t see the dragons grieve, or learn about the lives the stolen children would’ve had. Tui didn’t give the *main villains* anytime to develop, we could’ve used a few prologues or epilogues between the two, maybe even wasp! this is all just my opinion! tldr: tui didn’t develop most of the book 15 characters in a way that made you root for what happens to them, cottonmouth is an underwhelming villain for most of it, especially whenever lizard or luna gives him a snarky remark, and lizard just isn’t well developed enough to develop a connection with her imo
the only book i really enjoyed in arc 3 was the hive queen, and it was mainly because it gives more information on how each hive functions (forgive me if im wrong i havent read that book in a while)

I like swordtail I think his flop was him trying to distract himself and the others from luna and io when they first found luna his n9rmal self returned and didn't leave for a while of searching then he moped and worried then tryed to distract and say abeyance she'll come back on her own and I think the reason he didn't lead with sundew was because now nobody knew were luna was and he thought he couldn't lead without knowing were she is or with her. I know this is kinda wierd but the third arc was my favorite arc, I loved the first three books and re-read them almost everyday, personally I think that Swordtail had so much potential until Flames Of Hope where it showed him as being reckless, stupid and dependent on Luna, but Swordtail wasnt like that at all. In my opoin all Swordtail tried to do was lighten up some tense moments, and keep things happy within the group, Swordtail was raised being told that Leafwings would kill all the hivewings, which eventually he wanted to do, so when Sundew showed up he assumed that she had a plan to defeat them and followed her. In my opion Flames of Hope ruined the third arc and it had a ton of potential in the first 3 books, then the last two kinda dropped the tension.

It's true what you say; the third arc did seem a bit... bland at times. Sure it had some pretty groundbreaking additions to the Wings of Fire universe, but to me something just felt off about the story. Besides the main characters, everyone else seemed so much lesser. But of course, everone goes through ups and downs. It's nigh impossible to keep up a good streak forever. So if we do end up having an arc 4 or more Winglets books, lets hope Tui is in her full spirit again 😄
Swordtail was kind of a hotheaded goofball back in book 11, too. I just never liked him that much. I think he makes a good guy for Luna, though. I love the worldbuilding and tribes in arc three, but I draw way more arc 1-2 stuff, because they have better characters. I’ve drawn the DoD and the Jade Winglet as a group plenty, but the third arc povs? They’re not a group!!! I did headshot the stealth team once, but they’re mostly too big to put in one finished art piece without it getting VERY noisy.
I love swordtail but I agree I wish he had kept his personality. He should have been more of himself and I really don’t like book 15 thats when he goes down hill.

Don’t get me wrong I know what it’s like to be really frustrated with a character you think has great potential for example for me shadow the hedgehog. I think that he could have been a really good character but instead we just got sonic but he’s an edge lord. And I think that your criticisms would be valid but although I don’t think this is intended you seem to be talking about all side characters in any work of fiction ever. Don’t get me wrong I like a good side character arc but it’s fine to have characters with wacky personalities so that they can play off the main cast in a fun and entertaining way. And you’re (while probably inadvertently) still implying that all side changes ever should be so fleshed out and have such good character development that you could just make them a main character with no changes. As a private character writer I know that if you have a notion in your mind that that’s how all side characters should be then that completely zaps the fun out of making side characters in the first place. And if you are writing a series that you are going to publish like wings of fire that would probably lead to burnout and severely decrease the quality of your work. Great art though, love it!
The third arc wasn’t the greatest for a couple reasons…………..mainly to do with sundew…….anyway I love your take on it and your drawing is as beautiful as ever!!!!
I personally loved the third arc, maybe even the most of all three, but I gotta admit that I really don't like Swordtail. He's kinda annoying and barely does anything until the 15th book, and even then he is still really shallow. He just serves as a love interest for Luna, who is much more interesting and better character than Swordtail. I actually don't think that he should have been 3 dimensional, but rather just dropped altogether. I think Luna is a very independent person and I don't think every character needs a love interest. Also not to nitpick but I think Hazel from book 13 should be included in the side character line up.

Swordtail tbh was one of my favorite side characters. He has a nice confident personality that I adore. But I respect your opinion.

Swordtail was kind of a hotheaded goofball back in book 11, too. I just never liked him that much. I think he makes a good guy for Luna, though. I love the worldbuilding and tribes in arc three, but I draw way more arc 1-2 stuff, because they have better characters. I’ve drawn the DoD and the Jade Winglet as a group plenty, but the third arc povs? They’re not a group!!! I did headshot the stealth team once, but they’re mostly too big to put in one finished art piece without it getting VERY noisy.

I love swordtail but I agree I wish he had kept his personality. He should have been more of himself and I really don’t like book 15 thats when he goes down hill.

Tbh, Swordtail was amazing. I think it would've been amazing if idk, HIS ENTIRE PERSONALITY didn't just go "ya know what, ima be 2d"
I think that tui should take a break or go make new story's and comeback later with new motivation and ideas.
Don’t get me wrong I know what it’s like to be really frustrated with a character you think has great potential for example for me shadow the hedgehog. I think that he could have been a really good character but instead we just got sonic but he’s an edge lord. And I think that your criticisms would be valid but although I don’t think this is intended you seem to be talking about all side characters in any work of fiction ever. Don’t get me wrong I like a good side character arc but it’s fine to have characters with wacky personalities so that they can play off the main cast in a fun and entertaining way. And you’re (while probably inadvertently) still implying that all side changes ever should be so fleshed out and have such good character development that you could just make them a main character with no changes. As a private character writer I know that if you have a notion in your mind that that’s how all side characters should be then that completely zaps the fun out of making side characters in the first place. And if you are writing a series that you are going to publish like wings of fire that would probably lead to burnout and severely decrease the quality of your work. Great art though, love it!

The third arc wasn’t the greatest for a couple reasons…………..mainly to do with sundew…….anyway I love your take on it and your drawing is as beautiful as ever!!!!
I personally loved the third arc, maybe even the most of all three, but I gotta admit that I really don't like Swordtail. He's kinda annoying and barely does anything until the 15th book, and even then he is still really shallow. He just serves as a love interest for Luna, who is much more interesting and better character than Swordtail. I actually don't think that he should have been 3 dimensional, but rather just dropped altogether. I think Luna is a very independent person and I don't think every character needs a love interest. Also not to nitpick but I think Hazel from book 13 should be included in the side character line up.
