    I didn't know about Edge! Things are looking up for the SIM community.
    First Arma 3 and ETS2 went HD. Now we can look forward to DCS on Edge. Along with FSX & TrainSim on UE4.
    And IL2: BoS.

    "Fishbed" was the NATO designation for the MiG-21. Most Soviet-era interceptors/fighters were given such nicknames starting with an 'F'. Fresco, Farmer, Fagot, Fisbhed, Foxbat, Flogger, Fulcrum, Flanker, etc.

      Vike1121 Yes - that would be the aircraft this goes up against particularly in training, so it only makes sense to add it to the mix - the Mig outpaces the Sabre a bit too much.

    Just one nitpicky fact check. The MiG-21 was replaced in the interceptor role by the MiG-25, not the MiG-29. The MiG-29 is a multi-role fighter, designed to combat the F-15's and F-16's, and is not a pure interceptor aircraft.

    I am a rather casual sim player, was wondering if you would recommend this plane, even if I am more interested in flying than the systems...
    Though I am not surprised if I might still get it in the far future, as I am contemplating this against the sabre/mig15 right now.

    • @Mythricia1988
      @Mythricia1988 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Might be late to answer, but I own the Sabre and the MiG-21 - and honestly, although there is a literal sea of switches in the MiG-21 (it really is mind boggling) - the vast majority of them are simply "switch it on, and never touch it again, until I turn off the aircraft". So it's not as systematically complex as it might seem. There are a lot of systems but they're essentially fire and forget - the only switches you'll ever use in flight is probably the afterburner enable/disable, and in-air restart since you'll inevitably deprive the engine of fuel by accident and end up becoming a lawn dart... There is a very primitive radar, and the weapons loudout is a bit more interesting than the Sabre, so there's some systems management there though. In any case, the MiG-21 is one of, if not *the* most lovingly crafted modules for DCS.
      If you're in it just purely for the flying experience (that's how I play DCS too!), I'm actually not sure which to recommend you. They're both interesting in their own ways. The MiG is extremely stable at higher speeds, it's a bullet, and of course you can go really really fast in it. But it's actually kind of a beast at low speeds and on landing, so it has difficulty there. In contrast the Sabre is a very well behaved aircraft in general, and of course, it doesn't really go very fast... Unless you nosedive from 30'000 feet, in which case you'll lose all control authority as you pass Mach 1 and die. But it's a pleasant flyer - and more interesting during your typical flight envelope maybe, than the MiG-21. Although weapons wise, it's basically a gun ship, so you'll have to be enthusiastic about 50cals (six of them!), as that'll be your weapon of choice.
      Finally if you ever go online, the MiG-21 can see some limited use in a modern war scenario, where as the Sabre is basically dead on arrival. So you'll have to look for MiG-15 vs Sabre servers to play online more or less.
      Maybe that was of any use to you!

    So would the alcohol needed for the radar be vodka? (cue rimshot)
    That looks like a complete handful to pilot and manage. Definitely can't complain about being bored with it. I'm not heavily into military sims but this was interesting to see the amount of detail put into this fighter. However, if they ever come out with a detailed model of a F-14, I might have to look into it!

  • @liesdamnlies3372

    Regarding the designation "Fishbed": NATO reporting names for Eastern Bloc and Chinese fighter aircraft all start with "F" for "fighter". You can see them all laid-out in pretty tables on Wikipedia too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_reporting_name
    Specifically this bit is important in the above article: "To reduce the risk of confusion, unusual or made-up names were allocated, the idea being that the names chosen would be unlikely to occur in normal conversation, and be easier to memorise."
    So. How did we Western nations come-up with such a silly name like "Fishbed"? We made it up, specifically because it's weird!

    The detail is incredible, right down to the sealant paste on the canopy framing and the serial numbers on the perspex. I just hope we can do away with the English labels, because how am I supposed to learn more Russian if I can't press random buttons to see what blows up?

    Hey Froogle. I've got a video idea. You could do a video on your whole DCS setup, how you got everything working. Would be great for starters like me. I've been simming in FSX for 7 years now but I am new to the DCS world.
    I would appreciate a response, thanks.

  • @AShadowboxsFSX
    @AShadowboxsFSX 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Froogle, for someone like myself who is new to DCS, what (fixed wing) aircraft would you recommend to get them started?

    • @frooglesim
      @frooglesim  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AShadowboxsFSX Well DCS World comes for free with 2 fixed wing aircraft - the trainer mustang and the SU-25T. They'll get you started and then you can decide it you want to continue with reduced complexity aircraft such as the SU-25 or full complexity such as the A-10C. I'd recommend that, or the Mig.

    • @googelplussucksys5889
      @googelplussucksys5889 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A-10C! Extremely easy to fly (up and away!) but a good amount of depth. Cheap too, there's currently a great sale that you're not going to get it any cheaper than. Many joysticks and HOTAS designed after it too so no matter if you’re just flying with a keyboard or want to spend £500 on gear you can do that. The height of simulation.

  • @wardog6695
    @wardog6695 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    It can't be close to the original F-16A, just because the F-16 is ~18 years younger(1956 vs 1974).

    • @frooglesim
      @frooglesim  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      stas harch Age doesn't really come into it. A P51 mustang can out perform a 737 in many phases of flight (obviously not cruise). A well handled Mig 21 can match an F16-A which is why the Mig-21 remains in service in many areas to this day.

    • @MrSuperkaji
      @MrSuperkaji 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WiktorFIN
      Correct, NATO codenames are based on the role of the aircraft.
      Fighter aircraft codenames begin with "F", Bombers begin with "B" (Bear, Blackjack, etc), and "H" is for helicopters (Hind, Havoc, etc.)

      ***** I think TrackIR is incredibly useful in these aircraft, but with that you should be just fine with a normal joystick

      Yeah, I found that the more clickable the cockpit, the less I need to map so I think a regular joystick is fine. I have more things mapped in the Su-25T than I do in the P-51 or the A-10 (though to be fair, I do map all the hotas stuff on the A-10, but none of the other clickable stuff).

      There are alternatives to TrackIR, but you need a little building skills for those. Also, if you manage in FC3 without headtracking, you will manage here with SnapViews aswell. :)

      Bob Radu That actually sounds true, but how do you manage to click buttons (which are all over the cockpit) and fly the aircraft at the same time, in combat?

      ApoTroll In FC3 the 8-way hat switch that I have is fairly enough, but I thing that for better "simulation" I need a TrackIR.I found some articles about the home-made TrackIR, but it sounds.. not efficient and I don't know if it's going to give me the same experience that TrackIR will give me, and I'll never have the chance to drive a real fighter jet, so getting the best is worth it!but since I can't find a TrackIR in my country, I'll give the home-made a go. Thanks!

      .:AirbusFan:. Yes sir. DCS World is free and comes with the SU-25T. Head to the link in the video description and get flying.

      It comes with a SU-25T (without complex systems) and with a TF-51D (hight complex P-51D Trainer version). All other aircraft you can buy for very little money, there are offers every month! I'd recommend the A-10C!
