Loved seeing the yard workers, looked as though they were coming and going from Scott’s canteen, I worked in Scott’s training centre in 1981, so I could’ve been walking up that road, as I went to Scott’s canteen everyday!.

I served my time at Kincaids 75-79, remember getting 2 course meal and 1/2 pint milk for 23p in Scotts canteen, and going back at night if out on the p""", as they were open all night, left Scotland 79, went back several years ago, the sight broke my heart, where did we go wrong letting all the jobs and expertise disappear to other countries

I'm 19 years old from the Port and it's nuts to see how much it's changed.

Same from Greenock and it looked mental back in the day. Lot less traffic lights unlike now lol

Brilliant to see it again how I remember it as a wean. Scott's and Kincaid's is about the biggest shock value. Loved seeing the Reliant Robins and double deckers driving around Greenock again. Thanks for this.

Enjoyed that. Great piece of social history with the big sheds and cranes of Kincaids and Scotts and the crowds of men on the streets and coming out of the Knowe Road canteen
    Well done.

This is how I remember Port Glasgow to Greenock! The Esso Petrol station at 1:00. Fueled there many times. The Texaco Petrol station at 4:05 was where US service members could fuel using rations cards. There was a few bars around Scott's and Kinkaid's...can't recall the names any longer. Oh, yes...the Rotunda bar...even the Westburn or Rob Roy. I have had a pint in all. Greenock had a better look and more wealth in these days.

the wind in winter would funnel between scots and kincaids and it was brutal riding through on a motorbike ,blown about like an old crisp poke , happy days

Brilliant video, thanks for posting. I left Greenock not too many years after this was made, so much of it was exactly as I remembered. Not the same place now.
I lost count of how many accidents I went to on the "Para Handy Chicane" outside Scotts - before they put a roundabout in, running the gauntlet of "yerd" workers erupting from the big gate, Greenock Fire Station (many a night spent there). So many memories of a more innocent time ( not necessarily better)

I went to Greenock a couple of years after this was filmed. It was a great place to be in the 80s. I still miss it and consider it my hometown although I live in ireland now.
That drive has changed so much.

From Pottery Street onwards ye realise how much Greenock has lost ,a real eye opener. Id completely forgot that big Scotts yard where McDs is now.
From the Port ,would love to see a video going the other way

Ma Granda worked in these yards for years, was a boiler-maker (plural plaques killed him) and Shop Steward etc', used to drink in the pub near where he was reared: "The Carnock Bar" on the corner of Dellingburn Street, Joe Roddy was his name, lived in Cardross Crescent with ma Gran.
Loads of others used tae lowp the walls for a drink in The Oban, Sorenson's or Fred Flynn's (Crescent Bar).
Video brings back auld memories, cheers for posting.

Rankins boy. I've no been back since ma nana died. Ma nana's you always had somewhere to stay. I had in the 80s like most of the people in my family. So if the town wasn't right it in the 80s during Maggie thatcher. Definitely once you couldn't just go catch the train on a Fri and stay till Sunday. Miss Greenock felt safe and I know people won't understand but when I was growing up someone always had an eye out for you. Mind I grew up as the only proddy in Gabriel st.

I’ll probably get bashed in the comments for this but the current town is a lot nicer than this. I always see people complaining about the town centre but it’s really just a big chunk of west blackhall street, west Stewart street, and the oak mall that brings it down. The end of west blackhall street, the waterfront area, and Cathcart street are beautiful areas with thriving businesses. Yes, Greenock might’ve been wealthier back then but it was definitely more of an eye sore and I know which one I prefer

It's amazing; the toon looks totally dated, but at the same time everything looks new-ish, and shiny. The town centre basically looks the same today, except it is now a worn and tired sh*tehole.
