I can't stress the "talk to everyone & really soak it in" tip for first time players enough, it's SO important. Hell, I'm doing the same thing right now, and I've finished EarthBound more than ten times over the years. But it's been a long time since I played it, and it really does add to the experience to read all of the fun and quirky dialogue, and signs in towns & elsewhere. A lot of people have said that it's overrated, but clearly- there's a lot of us who disagree. EarthBound may not be the best game in terms of plot, but you've gotta remember that it's from the mid-90's, and it also _very_ much picks up the slack in other areas.
The "Talk to Everyone" tip made me smile, because this is one of the few RPG's where I DO talk to every character -- just because I love the unique dialogue THAT much -- no matter how non essential an NPC was, Itoi made sure to make their dialogue memorable, and I always loved that.
can you give me an example of a drawer or desk in earthbound that has items in it because as far as I know they dont, I've played through the game a few times and have literally never found anything in desks or drawers and I always would check in houses and hotels n stuff
If it wasn't for emulation and Mato's team, I'd still be waiting for Mother 3. I remember seeing that "Earthbound 2 in Development" sign in Fourside after beating Giygas, but I didn't know I'd be waiting 13 years for it -- longer if it wasn't for those madlads.
One of the best tips that I dont think is ever said: Using the LB button. The LB button functions as an A button, but will decide whether its a "Check" or "Talk to" option. So instead of hitting A at a phone or atm, then using the menu to hit check, you can just hit LB and itll pick the correct thing. It also counts as one handed mode like in Pokemon with the L=A option
Shigesato Itoi himself wants Mother 3 officially localized. At this point, it's only a matter of time before it truly happens. Let's keep on hoping as we fight to fulfill that dream. And remember: no crying until the end.
I played EarthBound for the first time when Chuggaa was redoing his Let's Play of the game. I got like three episodes in before I went, "OK, I'm sold", and got it on my New 3DS XL. Played it along with the Let's Play, which was an enjoyable experience for me. Haven't played it since, but I've been considering doing so, and I think this is what's gonna push me to finally do that.
I played so much earth bound in middle school and re played it countless times. I haven’t picked it up in about 2 or 3 years but my god I can’t believe earthbound is on the switch playing mother 2 and 1 on a hd tv screen is a dream come true.
For people who want to playthrough EarthBound Beginnings probably would recommend a barebones guide and or a cheat cheat for what psi/ items do. Otherwise one of most useful things in the game is bread. Using Bread would make bread crumbs this set a one time waypoint. It honestly a god sent when backtracking.
at the end of the day old rpgs are just a matter of grinding, the only thing that makes earthbound beginnings hard is the fact that you are expected to take time and grind and level up etc
I have seen Chugga’s playthrough of the game and I immediately fell in love with the characters and story. I have see lore videos and I was just anxiously waiting for it to come on swtich so I can better play it! I’m excited to play it for the first time and just enjoy all the amazing music, I sometimes when I’m having a rough time just listen to the full ost bc something about the music is just so relaxing
This is amazing. I’ve beat the game multiple times on consoles. Super Nintendo, ROM on computer, 3DS and now I get to play a over again on the switch! :)
Long time lurker, at least 10 years, and getting the chance to finally play this has been amazing, the game is amazing but I'm sure everyone knows that by now, have a lovely day and thank you for the many laughs and more to come
i started playing earthbound for the first time immidiately after the direct, i knew nothing about the game but i really love it! the music, humor and characters are really appealing to me and i just found your channel through the game, i´m exited to see more :)
Even though I've played the Mother games a million times, it's still so cool to see new people getting to the series, this is really good advice to newcomers
Finally! As a longtime (but not that long) viewer it feels like some deep important grandparent lore I’ve been missing out on. I’m excited to hear there’s a post game with new dialogue and stuff. Only game I’ve played that does that is Psychonauts 2, and I’m on the hunt for more.
Happy to see you guys can share this. I've played earthbound many times, and I stand by your recommendation of this game. happy trails to all those first timers out there.
Anyone not used to games like this - the talk to everyone tip is super important. If not getting useful dialogue youll get stuff that builds the world a bit, especially with the quirky npcs in Earthbound. It's so cute seeing Stephen and Mal like this with the switch release, was how i acted with Lets Go eevee as my first RPG was pokemon blue.
I am so happy! I remember playing Earthbound when I was younger and enjoyed it but had no thought of replaying it, even when it was rereleased on the Wii U VC or the SNES Classic. It wasn’t until Emile’s Earthbound revisit and your vlogs on the Mother Series that reignited my interest in this series. Currently replaying it right now and loving every minute of it!
After hearing you guys talk about earthbound for years I finally get to play it!and it’s loads of fun it’s everything you guys have said about it and more and I absolutely adore it!
We all knew this was gonna happen, I'm just glad it happened when it did, my friends who've never heard of the game are loving it and are surprised this game came out when it did.
This'll be my first time playing and I'm so excited! Already, all of the little character interactions are such a joy. I started watching last year and you two have really sparked my interest in the game as well as being just an all around comfort. So thank you
First time watching your content and I LOVE IT! Coming from a guy that met his wife online on red dead redemption MP. I moved from Scotland UK to Texas and we are happily married and enjoying games together. Y’all so wholesome and I’m interested in playing earthbound for the first time and you guys tipped me over the edge I’m going to start it !
Just wanted to leave here that I happened to finish the T Rex bat challenge while watching this video! Was kind of funny to hear you talk about never needing to grind, but hey it was fun.
It’s cool seeing a full video on this now! I remember asking for tips during an extra life years ago, and I remember hearing “get bottle rockets”. Now having played the game along with Emile’s let’s play, I’m also excited to know new people are gonna get a chance to see it through!
I'm playing it for the first time. I emulated it a while back, but then I got busy with college and I never picked it back up. I have had a New 3ds for several years now, but I've been holding out hope for it to be on Switch and it finally is. My first real job is about to get busy for a couple of months, but I beat Frank which I think is almost up to where I was. This time I intend to actually play the game the way it was meant to be played, blind and at a slow pace. Edit: Just beat it! Beating it without a guide was an experience, but talking to everyone is certainly good advice that helped 99% of the time. I'm super glad I didn't look up how to beat the final boss. I had no idea that was what you were supposed to do, but I did it anyway out of desperation when it became apparent nothing else was working. Now I can go back and truly enjoy the Extra Life Streams.
I actually had never even heard about Earthbound before finding the vlog. I only knew who Ness was from Smash games but didn’t know where he had come from. After listening to Stephen and Mal talk about it so much I wanted to play it but never had a way to do that until now and I’m happy that I (along with many others) get a chance to experience this piece of gaming history.
Not my first time giving it a go, but I'm definitely looking to do a full playthrough of it! Last time I was really invested in it, I had made it to Fourside. Honestly, other than the usual Smash Bros intro, you were both my first true introduction to how great of a series the Mother games are.
Like so many others, I've seen how much you guys so enjoyed earthbound and it made me wanna try it, so finally at age 30 I started it 😆 so far I love it! Another of my friends is a big fan too and she's been giving me tips and said basically the same thing as you guys. Looking forward to savoring the whole thing!!
You Mal and chugga gave me the reason to use an emulator on my laptop a few years ago to play it. Now that it’s on the switch I can play it officially and am looking forward to it. I played up until Saturn valley when I was on the emulator. Can’t wait to finish this game. The story and humor is amazing.
So glad to finally see EarthBound on the Switch Online service! It's a fantastic game that does take a little bit to get used to, especially until you get your second character. After that, it really gets going! Funny how Stephen mentions that it's on the New 3DS and the Wii U and then days later, Nintendo announces that they're taking away the ability to purchase games on those systems next year. Just be sure to take your time, talk to everyone, and absolutely do not be afraid to use a guide for the game. Nintendo themselves scanned and uploaded the entire EB player's guide back when the Wii U version came out, so give it a look!
I 1st played EarthBound on the Wii U a few years back. I only played for half an hour and never played it again. Now that it is on Switch, I’ve been playing an hour each day, and I’m enjoying it a lot! Like you said, I’ve been taking to every npc, and I love the all the dialogue and the wittiness of the characters. I’m definitely a fan now!
Never had a need for walkthroughs because I've seen Stephen play the game throughout the years I've been following 😁 I remember being stuck after the Happy Happy Village. I'm going to pick it up after Arceus is done
Been playing through Earthbound for the first time, and I'm about to take on the second dungeon. I'm really enjoying it and I think it may be one of my favorite RPGs so far; up there with Paper Mario and Chrono Trigger.
Thank you for the video, I am definitely going to need it. I've been wanting to play Earthbound for a long time but haven't gotten the time to do so when I bought it on the Wii U VC and it stopped working so lost my chance and just waited for Nintendo to put it on the Switch. You two are one of the many people who made me interested in the series and I'm looking forward to start my adventure. ☺️
person from the starmen dot net days here and I have to say, while I also wouldn't recommend someone play earth bound beginnings first, I think you're underselling it. There's a lot of unique charm and hilarious dialogue in it that you'd miss out on if you treat it as a chore. Sure you have to grind in it to get by but that's when you put on a podcast or something and do some multitasking. Doesn't have to be hard if you level way up and just steamroll all enemies
I actually bought Earthbound on my 3DS a few months ago, before the eshop closing announcement and the Switch announcement. I'm at the very beginning of the game, but I am enjoying it so far! I'm so glad the game is coming to the Switch and will be more accessible! Now let's hope for Mother 3!
First time Earthbound player here, and I’m doing it blind! Besides anything I’ve seen from Smash Ultimate spirits, this is all going to be completely new to me! Knowing it was coming, I waited for this vlog to come out before I start my adventure. Can’t wait to finally play it!
I know this video is 6 months old, but I just finished EarthBound for the first time this weekend. I honestly avoided it for a long time because I’m not the biggest turn-based RPG fan, which I generally find slow paced and mostly boring. But I did find EarthBound really charming. It’s incredibly weird in the best way, and since I was remarkably unspoiled given it’s a 30 year old game, I found a lot of the twists and turns of the story genuinely surprising. While the turn-based combat did feel frustrating and sometimes felt like it slowed down my desire to get through the story, ultimately I was really surprised by how much I liked the experience overall. I’m glad you and Mal consistently talk fondly of the game because otherwise I most likely would have never given it a chance.
i'm really excited to play earthbound for the first time!! between the two of y'all's love for the game + going through chuggaa's lp of it, i can tell it's an amazing game and i can't wait to play it :)
Lotta people seem to ignore it but I always got some good use out of mach pizza and condiments during the early to mid game. I find that to be better off than playing super conservative with PP for healing.
The way you telling this story is kind like that Ness(Stephen) meet Paula(Mal) on the internet and a few years later they got married. Thanks for the tips and have fun playing earthbound.
I've seen playthroughs of it before and so far I've only used walkthroughs to remind myself of a certain order of things and then prioritize them like I got really confused what to do in threed at first so I used the first page of a walkthrough to remind myself
I decided to play Earthbound Beginnings first, and it's definitely hard. There are some parts that have aged really poorly, especially the map. However, unlike Earthbound I feel like there's a little more strategy involved in where you save and how you go through battles. In Earthbound there are many enemies you can just bash your way through, but that's not always the case with Beginnings. The grindiest part of the game for me was that one part at the end, when you have the extra character...I'm being vague to not spoil it, but those who have played it know what I'm talking about. Beginnings definitely needs a remake more than Earthbound does, but hopefully both get one in the future, along with Mother 3.
Very excited these games are getting the spotlight on Switch (Nintendo also put out a neat "overview" video for EB after the Direct), and I'm VERY hyped for the Live A Live localization and remaster!! I think Stephen and Mal point out an important trend here, because not only is LAL getting localized after all these years, but a SATELLAVIEW title of all things, Radical Dreamers, is getting its western release bundled with the Chrono Cross remaster! Insane.
I’ve only ever played up to right before the 8th “Your Sanctuary” and for whatever reason I stopped playing and never got back to it. Now that it’s on the Switch, this is as good of a reason as any to finally play through the game from start to end.
I’ve wanted to play EarthBound for probably close to eight years now but have never been able to because of the limitations of the ways to play. Finally after so many years of waiting I’m in the middle of my first ever run through of the game and it’s absolutely fantastic
Now that they announced yesterday that they are closing the Wii U and 3DS eShop, it makes sense they finally decided to move them onto Switch online. I hope more people are able to play it now!
When I first played EarthBound a few years ago, one thing that I found really interesting was how much the Sanctuary bosses reminded me of the Totem Pokemon fights from Pokemon Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, and after that, I enjoyed the battle system A LOT more.
I played Earthbound for the first time 4 years ago on the Wii U; before that, I'd watched NCS' playthrough a few times. Watching that playthrough is a classic way to have a chill time. I defeated the fifth Sanctuary boss with Flash Beta!
I cannot WAIT to try out Earthbound. I almost feel like I need to set a mood to play it in. But I also don't want to wait forever. Seize the day and all that.
I played Earthbound for the first time when they released it on the New 3DS, and I loved the experience, even though I did get confused or lost on some things. And as I thought about going back to it, it drops on the switch. So starting another nice, slow play through of the game
I'm really bad at RPGs so I have started Earthbound a few times but have never been able to finish it. Hoping that this new rerelease and playing on the switch will get me through it! I've tried on Wii U and 3DS! So... can't say I haven't helped show my support for the series haha. I have watched Chugga's playthrough though, so I know the story beats and I love the characters. Can't wait to experience it myself.
Earthbound is a great game with lots of charm. One super cool thing to note for returning players is that if they would like to know more about the stats of enemies, items, etc. they should try to get ahold of the earthbound guide sold by fangamer. It is full of amazing art, interesting stats, and in general has a lot of charm that I enjoyed looking through on my second play through.
Earthbound wasn't available in the UK until the Wii U so the first time I played it was when I was like 15 on the Xbox..... yes, I know..... but I never got far at all. I got to the point where you have to find Paula and I just couldn't find her. I dunno if I am remembering right or not and that is probably not that hard and I was probably just a dumb kid but that is as far as I got. I have been meaning to get round to it for a while but I will probably play it on the SNES Classic whenever I do get to it.
I was introduced to Earthbound because of Smash N64. I got further acquainted with it on Newgrounds, before discovering emulation in the late 2000s. There were 3 games I really wanted to emulate as a kid. Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. I'd heard of them, and had wanted to try them for a while.
I'm terrible with handling emulation... ... ...but I managed to download Earthbound on the Wii U a while back. It was one of those weird experiences I didn't get what fans were talking about until I beat the game, and then it hit me all at once. It was like ..."Huhhhhhh... I guess... I'm having fun?" ... then I was taken by surprise once it was all over... "Oh, my heart. This game was really cool." ... It's a JRPG which handles quirkiness the best aside from weird characters from Super Mario RPG and the Dragon Quest games, where as usually I'm either not fond of the weird characters from most JRPG's, or the devs were too afraid to crank up the fun to give the weird characters a chance to shine with their freak flag flying.
i would like to play it, I had it on the snes growing up, but i have a hard time sence its pure reading (most reading baised games i struggle with.) I really hope it comes tp Stephen Plays
At first I wasn't sure if I agreed with you in playing Earthbound before Mother 1, but that's actually what I did and I think I do end up agreeing with that, haha. I played Earthbound, Mother 3, and then Mother 1. I did end up enjoying it in this order because Mother 1 felt like a more challenging game which was great after playing the other two games. Though I'd say that Mother 3 could be considered quite hard at times as well.
2012: "earthbound is never going to be released again for international audiences" 2022: "a fourth re-release in the west? yeah it was only a matter of time"
Mother 3 at E3, calling it now 6:40 gonna push back on this a little. EarthBound has kind of a inverted difficulty curve where up until you get Paula is easily the hardest part of the game. Edit: Well Stephen basically said that. Should have waited a second
I wish I had taken more time to soak in the world of Earthbound on my first time through. I still enjoyed it a lot, but I feel like I would've gotten a bit more of an experience out of it
And on this episode of Stephen and Mal being adorable nerds.
I can't wait to finally play Earthbound!!
I can't stress the "talk to everyone & really soak it in" tip for first time players enough, it's SO important. Hell, I'm doing the same thing right now, and I've finished EarthBound more than ten times over the years. My personal tip: check everything you can. Trashcans are obvious, but drawers and desks sometimes hold important or useful things.
can you give me an example of a drawer or desk in earthbound that has items in it because as far as I know they dont, I've played through the game a few times and have literally never found anything in desks or drawers and I always would check in houses and hotels n stuff
@@chimp9465 The drawer in the patients' room in the Threed hospital. Trying to give a hint to a good item to have without outright saying what to do.
Games like Earthbound are why I learned to respect emulation. So many people would've missed out on that experience if it didn't exist.
I would've never gotten into emulation if not for earthbound
Same for me, except replace "Earthbound" with "Fire Emblem".
@@MicaiahBaron same but both
If it wasn't for emulation and Mato's team, I'd still be waiting for Mother 3. I remember seeing that "Earthbound 2 in Development" sign in Fourside after beating Giygas, but I didn't know I'd be waiting 13 years for it -- longer if it wasn't for those madlads.

Even though I've played the Mother games a million times, it's still so cool to see new people getting to the series, this is really good advice to newcomers

We all knew this was gonna happen, I'm just glad it happened when it did, my friends who've never heard of the game are loving it and are surprised this game came out when it did.
I got EarthBound on the 3DS back in July. I'm excited to play it on a bigger screen now!

I like the Strawberry one
This will be my first time playing earthbound, and I'm very excited. Especially after watching you two for years now
I’ve watched several LPs of EarthBound (including yours!) and am so excited to play it for myself! I just got to Winters and am loving it!

person from the starmen dot net days here and I have to say, while I also wouldn't recommend someone play earth bound beginnings first, I think you're underselling it.
I've never played Earthbound but i watched Emile's LP of it and have been itching to play it. Thank you guys for the tip! I'm starting it tomorrow
I made my way through most of my adventure playing earthbound and I have to say, this is what I deserve for a very long time.
THANK YOU!
I've beaten the game a few times on my wii u and 3ds! Can't wait to try the tent glitch on the switch 😂
The only thing I can think is of, is that everybody who plays this needs to be introduced to the Tent and everything wonderful that can happen there.
With the 3DS and Wii U eshops shutting down, this is likely your only way to legally play Earthbound without getting scalped, once 2023 comes around.
I adore these 2… I hope to meet them at some point in the future
I've seen playthroughs of it before and so far I've only used walkthroughs to remind myself of a certain order of things and then prioritize them like I got really confused what to do in threed at first so I used the first page of a walkthrough to remind myself
I started Earthbound last weekend, and YEAH. Frank is HARD XD I am going to follow your tip and fight everything lol
I'm a new comer to earthbound, I've seen chuggaa's playthrough but that's it. It's been fun so far
I’ve wanted to play EarthBound for probably close to eight years now but have never been able to because of the limitations of the ways to play. Finally after so many years of waiting I’m in the middle of my first ever run through of the game and it’s absolutely fantastic
I’ve never played Earthbound myself but I might consider after I finish Arceus 👀
12:45 hello!
I played Earthbound for the first time 4 years ago on the Wii U; before that, I'd watched NCS' playthrough a few times. Watching that playthrough is a classic way to have a chill time.
I defeated the fifth Sanctuary boss with Flash Beta!
TOILET EARTHBOUND RETURNS \o/
I already started Earthbound Beginnings before watching this video. I am enjoying it though, a lot of save state/rewind, but still enjoyable.
I just finished my earthbound playthrough on switches night. I did the T-rex% challenge for it and the SoK grind took me almost 5 hours to get,
5 Hours for Sword of Kings? Lucky.
@@josephboehmer1245 I know, I was expecting at least 10
@@AntiHeroSora I've legitimately never had it take under 12.
@@josephboehmer1245 I got extremely lucky one playthrough and got in within 10 enemies
First time Mother player here, and I’m doing the unthinkable… starting with Earthbound Beginnings. That said, I’m having a great time!
I’m a first time earthbound player and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE L BUTTON TIP!
This game was really cool."
...
I just wish there was a physical copy of it for those who don't have wireless internet like me.
2012: "earthbound is never going to be released again for international audiences"
2022: "a fourth re-release in the west? yeah it was only a matter of time"
It's ironic that the vlog where they mention that you can get it on the 3DS on the day that announced that the Eshop is shutting down next year
Earthbound just reminds me of the Earthbound Immortals from the YuGiOh 5d's anime.
One more thing, of you are overleveled, you can get the experience and items from enemies without fighting
Mother 3 at E3, calling it now
6:40 gonna push back on this a little. EarthBound has kind of a inverted difficulty curve where up until you get Paula is easily the hardest part of the game.
Edit: Well Stephen basically said that. Should have waited a second
Never played the game myself, but knowing that it's on NSO may encourage me to give it a playthrough at some point!
I gotta replay Earthbound for the 100th time now
I wish I had taken more time to soak in the world of Earthbound on my first time through. I still enjoyed it a lot, but I feel like I would've gotten a bit more of an experience out of it
the only time you need to grind is in the first area in my opinion
I love Earthbound its honestly one of my favorite games but I don't think that I'll ever play beginnings lol
I've been wanting to play the game eventually and now its easier to do.
i cried the same way at the ending of wind waker, cause I knew the game was done lol
Thanks for the end slate tip. That part was kind of annoying lol
