Those who want a true scientific breakdown of bass fishing and do not want to spend 200$ on this book should follow the YT channel The Nature of Fishing. The dude is a biologist and does an incredible deep dive into the science of largemouth bass.
I compare a bass brain to a micro SD CARD and human brain is a SD CARD. One is bigger but both can store the same amount of Information ! FOOD FOR TAUGHT? THEY ARE NOT AS DUMB AS MOST PEOPLE PRESUME!
Your next purchase, should be the entire series of Dr. Elwood "Buck" Perry, the father of structure fishing. I also have a copy of the "Knowing Bass" book and it is very good. I have read both of these various publications more than once.
The book sounds interesting and not that expensive for a professional who can educate himself on his craft. Doug Hannon 'The Bass Professor' was who I studied for bass wisdom. Taken from us way too early. Don't share too many secrets. 😉
When did you graduate from Stevens Point? I work in forestry in Oregon and have worked with a Matt Mellantine who went to same school. He had dreadlocks. Man did he get a shock when he saw how we do forestry in the PNW.
Definitely interested in you sharing out! Not getting my personal copy anytime soon @ 300-1k. Original price was $26.95…absurd gouging…they should reprint…sell at around $50 x ~30 million bass anglers (even if only 5-10% put out money) = 75-150 million in sales…easy math…easy money!?!
I have a feeling why that doctor left Berkley; given now days they can't come out with their own ideal of a glad bait; instead they just knock-off a bait like their Nessie soft glad bait from Grow Design Flag 170. Berkley is a big company with money and have all this hi-tech resource, but yet none of their scientist can't come up with one a glad bait? i find that kinda funny to be honest. I guess it falls down to this sayin "good artists borrow, but great artists steal." 😂
I was lucky enough to buy this when it was first released, so I got it at its normal price. It’s not a super easy read (unless you’re seriously into biology), but there is a lot of insight that can be taken from this book. Side note, that book is heavy. Every page is gloss paper, so it weighs more than most books of the same size. Highest quality paper back I’ve ever owned.
Anybody want a copy I got one for sell America. $300. Can’t believe that book turned into such a great investment. Bought it on Amazon about 10 years ago for $20. 😂😂😂
Dang! 200$, been looking for a good “scientific “ approach bass book but haven’t been able to find much, pretty surprising nobody got a stout bass biology and science book
One of my favourite types of videos on TH-cam is bass research. Not only is it interesting, it also helps me become a better angler. I have a question in regards to bass behaviour. What is the latest you’ve seen bass guarding fry around your area? I’m in Ontario Canada, on the west end of Lake Ontario. I came across a large mouth guarding fry in the middle of September and it threw me off. Spawn here is around May into June, so seeing one guarding in September was a trip for me.
Depends on the water and temp. I'm in AZ. Have seen January and August here between lakes, rivers and ponds. Waves of spawning. Sometimes they spawn , move out because of weather or something else that interferes and then spawn again. Not all bass spawn at the same time. I've caught same bass on bed few months apart.
@@youtubzkoz The water temp was in the 70’s at that point. The temperature’s were already starting to fall at that point. I just never seen them guarding that late in the year before, so it threw me for a loop. 😂
@Triple87 there has been some bass which have been seen bedding and guarding in winter and fall so as it's unusual it's not impossible . It's unlikely that the offspring live through the harsher times though. Many variables create this.
@@youtubzkoz Well, it’s a bit different up here. It’s usually snowing half way through October here. It might not be unusual down south, but us northern guys it’s definitely out of the ordinary. The marina I saw it in I’ve been fishing for years and never seen them guarding that late.
Knowing bass anglers who are also students of bass behavior, will have to join and become a member. Sign me up ! Great concept for future videos for sure !
It will be interesting to get your opinion as to whether most fishing success is determined by the bass's genetic instinctual behavior or whether a measure of success comes from their reaction outside those parameters....
This is the kind of book that I think us fisherman should read, look forward to your thoughts on it as you read it and Im going to try and find a copy, any thoughts on where to start my search???
Ugh. There is some basis to a few of his conclusions...but it's not all it's cracked up to be. His knowledge did help Berkley's research in the early days...back when they cared about research. science and weren't concerned about people like Ike designing baits. Then again, when you're owned by the parent company of Rubbermaid...well, it's all down hill from there.
Matt, I have a question about Jackall Knockin Jaw, I have brought 35 pieces because you said it was your favorite blade. The question is should I also buy OSP Override and Evergreen Little max(have you tried them) or I will be good with Knockin Jaw? Thanks for your answer if you have time.
Hmm…. My wife bought me a copy years ago for my birthday. I got busy that year coaching our son’s travel baseball team and never opened it. I just looked and its on our bookshelf in the living room. I’m not planning on telling her it’s such a prized book 😜. We are heading to Florida to catch some of our son’s season opening college baseball games at the end of the month and will make sure to take it along. You would think our son’s team would be excited to start the baseball season - nope…. The team is staying at a resort south of Orlando for 2 weeks to kick off the season. All the boys are more pumped to hit all the area ponds on off days since we are in winter mode still up here in the north. All the boys are packing travel rods for the trip.
Geez Matt! I looked up the book on Amazon the other day after watching to this video. Paperback was $160 used. I look today and now it is between $300 - $400! I guess I have to blame your awesome influence! Must be because you are a fellow Pointer alumni :)
@@MattStefanFishing You are a great salesman and have a lot of influence on the fishing community. I jest about the price, but I believe it probably spiked because of your video. How many of the over 1300 views checked Amazon? I am sure quite a few. The algorithms probably encouraged the spike. Either way, you sparked me to go and re-read Jim Root's book on smallmouth bass. Keep it up brother and good luck this year!
Thanks for sharing Matt! I also had a similiar experience in college... went to Purdue in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and wound up in IT due to such a small market for Aquaculture and Fisheries work. Now I put my education to use on the weekends figuring out the fisheries of Northern Michigan.

Some excellent research on bass reactive instinct was conducted on chemical reactive behavior,as some of the most miss understood bitting mechanisms chems release from under scales that trigger response to stimulation of reactive behaviors such as being hooked an what happens to the other fish that are schooled in that area taking into consideration of time of year an water temps .causing fish to feed when they are not active, inactive ,neutral fish ,each having their unique characteristics which can affect other fish into reacting to a bait . Causing fish to eat during stressful periods like post spawn females

Just read this book 2 weeks ago, pretty interesting book. Was able to find it at library since the book was well over 100 bucks
Very cool
I bought that book when it came out. I'm glad I grabbed it while it was still in print. It's now out-of-print and over $200!!! BUT I'M NOT SELLING!!!
