  • The Problem of Driving a Car in Mumbai | Versova & Lokhandwala Tour Vlog
In this Sandy and Karan vlog, we dive deep into the ongoing struggle of driving a car in Mumbai, focusing on the current situation in Versova and Lokhandwala. Join me as I take you through these popular neighborhoods and share why driving in Mumbai has become more of a hassle than a joy.
When I first started driving in Mumbai, it felt like freedom-zipping through the streets, heading to favorite hangouts, and enjoying the city's vibe. But over the years, things have changed. Today, taking the car out for a simple drive or a coffee run has turned into a complicated task, especially in areas like Versova and Lokhandwala. These neighborhoods, once vibrant with activity and ample parking options, have gradually turned into no-parking zones.
In the past, parking in Versova was fairly simple. You could pull up right in front of your destination, park the car, and be on your way. Now, nearly all the spaces in Versova are designated as no-parking zones. This means, even if you want to visit a local coffee shop or a favorite restaurant, you can’t simply drive up and park. Instead, I have to drop the car off at a Pay and Park lot and either walk a fair distance or take a rickshaw to reach my destination. It takes the spontaneity and joy out of the entire experience.
This vlog shows you first-hand what it's like driving through Mumbai’s Versova and Lokhandwala. I highlight how difficult it has become to find parking in these areas and how this has impacted my daily routine. From the once-busy streets now filled with no-parking signs to the overcrowded Pay and Park areas that charge high fees, the convenience of owning and driving a car in Mumbai has almost disappeared.
The parking problem in Mumbai is now a huge issue for car owners. In neighborhoods like Lokhandwala, where driving used to be enjoyable, the frustration of finding a parking spot overshadows everything else. If you don’t have a driver or someone to drop you off, it often feels like driving your car out of the house is not even worth the effort anymore. It’s not just about finding a place to park, but also about the time and energy wasted driving around in circles trying to secure a spot.
In this vlog, we touch on the reasons why the situation has become so dire. With the number of cars on the roads increasing every year and limited infrastructure to accommodate them, the city had no choice but to enforce stricter parking rules. On paper, it’s a good idea to regulate parking, but the lack of paid parking options makes the situation even worse. We need more Pay and Park lots in Mumbai, but they are scarce and often overcrowded.
As a car owner, I completely understand why the city has made these changes. With Mumbai’s population growing rapidly and the number of vehicles on the roads reaching an all-time high, stricter parking laws were inevitable. However, the city’s infrastructure has not kept up with these changes. While there are more no-parking zones, the availability of paid parking spots has not increased to meet the demand. This imbalance has made driving in Mumbai less practical and more stressful.
I’ve had several days where I simply abandoned the idea of driving altogether. The hassle of trying to find parking and then still having to walk a distance to reach the final destination takes the joy out of driving. The lack of sufficient parking options also adds to the congestion on the roads. Cars pile up as drivers search for any available spot, leading to more traffic and frustration for everyone.
Despite these challenges, I still love Mumbai. This city is home, and even though driving here has become difficult, it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else. But the realities of driving in Mumbai today have forced me to reconsider my habits. I now often prefer to take public transport or rickshaws rather than drive, especially when heading to busy areas like Versova. It’s faster, less stressful, and I don’t have to worry about parking.
But will this change my love for driving? Maybe, or maybe not.
In conclusion, while driving in Mumbai has its challenges, I’m still hopeful that things will improve in the future. Maybe we’ll see more paid parking lots, better traffic management, and an overall improvement in the infrastructure. Until then, we just have to learn to live with the current situation and find ways to make driving in this city a bit more bearable.
