- Cape Sounion, or Sounio is located about 50km drive south of Athens at the end of the Attica Peninsula in Greece.
Sounio is at the end of the Athens Riviera, and is a fantastic day trip and drive along the coast from Athens. It is noted for the Temple of Poseidon, perched on the final headland of Attica, and surrounded on 3 sides by the Aegean Sea.

Completed in 440BC it is one of the major surviving buildings of Hellenic Greece.
The current temple is built on top of the remains of an older temple building, which was destroyed by the Persians in about 480BC, following their defeat of the 300 Spartans and Leonidas, and the subsequent destruction of Athens.
A visit to Sounio is not just about a visit to the temple, but also to visit and perhaps eat at one of the many beach resorts located en route to the temple along the Athens Riviera from Athens.
There are also many large hotel complexes located in the area, which are perfect for a few days stay if you wish to remain near Athens, and not travel out to the Greek Islands.

Hi, I commented the other day on another video.
Having spent a couple of days looking at day trips from Athens, I'd 99% settled on Sounion, and this exceellent video just confirmed it for me. That's the sort of place I love. I know it's 90min or more on the bus but that's fine, some good tunes on the phone, and that beautiful place to enjoy at the end.
