lempicka is a masterpiece. the team was open to criticism, some of the criticism stuck me as unfair. should have received more Tony nominations . I will say say there is lots of material for show . it was tuff to know what to keep . Lempicka is brilliance

Interesting video, thanks for breaking it down. Sadly didn’t get to see Lempicka as I was supposed to go this week, but it’s interesting to hear what the issues were

Here’s the thing I think the Florence Welch Gatsby is gonna come to Broadway when the creative team (especially Chavkin) knows it’s ready for Broadway, they’re already making significant changes to the show in Boston as we speak. And remember Hadestown had 3 or four tryouts before it finally made it to Broadway

Now I’m scared - I’m seeing Gatsby in Boston tomorrow June 1 - wish me luck 😮, should be interesting if nothing else…

@jyangtoho I just saw it. I have a lot of thoughts. I don't want to say that it was a mess... But it was definitely a work in progress. I think the performers we're strong. The choreography was excellent. They spent quite a bit of money on the basic set. But the book was meandering and weirdly highlighted characters and plot lines from the book that aren't that important to the whole story as it originally was. The music was good but... I'm not sure it works as a musical. There weren't really any bops. I could see this music working more like something Jamie Lloyd would do, or even illinoise - deconstructed. This didn't know what it was... but maybe they'll figure it out. Also there wasn't any joy or lightness in it. No jokes really. If you didn't know the story already you wouldn't get the story from this and so it doesn't work on its own. It's bleaker in tone than the broadway version.

@@atuljoshi1990 do you think it should go to Broadway eventually?

    • @atuljoshi1990

@@broadwaybabywmh I want it to because of the talent of the cast, director, choreographer, Florence (I mean!) etc.. but only if they fix it. As it is now I personally think it would be compared harshly. Whatever the flaws of the current B’way production, it has named stars that give stellar performances, the music is more traditional Broadway (dependable for a tourist) …plus it has a couple of bops (I like the green light duet). Also it is equally funny, follows the movie book/plot pretty closely, and the Book is clean and tight. I think this Boston production is shooting for something more modern and subversive, but it has (a lot) of work to do. Just my opinion (I mean, who am I other than just a theatre fan). I think if it decides to go more modern and less B’way, that might be the way. Look - the music was great but whenever they ended the songs, the audience wasn’t sure if it was time to clap or not - that’s because the music or direction or both didn’t do its job in guiding the audience. That is true of the whole thing.

It wasn’t perfect but it was clearly picking up steam with more and more fans. I loved it and believe had it not been buried among so many newbies, it would have had a better shot. The vast majority are praising it. Read comments on any clip, any article, any theatre app/thread. The critics represent the minority. They screwed it. It’s a shame. We need more shows like Lempicka.

I think we read different articles. The point of the article was not what you drew from it.
But that was also the challenge with Lempicka. Some got it. Others didn’t.

I watched the opening number in that one bootleg video posted on TH-cam. I can definitely tell why it failed even if no one “explained” it to me. Yes, visually, it’s very stunning, and then there’s Eden Espinosa. But the music just didn’t hook me. People who say they love the score probably enjoy other music that’s similar. It was watered-down, 4-chord pop song structure, and forgettable melodies. A show can have all the bells and whistles in sets, lights, costumes, etc….but if the actual book and score aren’t strong…it’s gonna fail almost immediately. The music just didn’t fit the theme of the show. That’s what happens when you hire people to write music who aren’t strong at composition. That’s my biggest criticism….and it’s a pretty big one considering the most important part of a musical is the music.

17 shows launched this season , that has never happened . as someone said to me if you are coming in to nyc and can see one show , do you pick a show you know or one you do not. final weeks it was picking up , I believe if it had a few more weeks it would have made it .
