I watched the official Tesla video first and decided I should consider having a Tesla mobile service technician change my Model Y's cabin air filter; then I saw the price ($73) and decided to look at other videos. This is the best one I have come across and it boosted my confidence that I could change the filter. I was unable to unclip the wires to the speaker and light, but that did not matter; I was able to both remove and install new filters.
Great tutorial. Coming from owning several European cars, I can say Tesla engineers designed the filter change process as you would never have to change it.
Hello, female here. I was able to do this step by step. The hardest part was just bending sideways from the passenger side door to get to it but other than that, I was able to do it in about 20 mins. Just have a little cup to collect the screws and black clip thingys they pop out and they blend in with your mat since it’s black. I bought this filter from your link and got it the next day with all the tools included which helped so much. I have the same car. MYP 22
Wow so this worked once I figured out that the screw for the filter was way up higher than I realized. I thought it was lower and i'd have to unscrew like 10 screws. Nope, its up high in the footwell, just 1 screw and didn't even have to pop off the plastic for the glove box. I didn't even fully remove the side of the footwell. Very easy peasy. 2022 Model Y.
thank you for sharing, I watched your video while I was changing my filter, the screw where my filter is was on the top , which was a little bit harder to uncrew. and also I had this I guess guide in the middle of the cover, so while placing the cover back on the side, I have to make sure I align the center short plastic "rod" so everything aligns and push the tabs back in... thank you again
I had Tesla change the Cabin Filter in my 2018 Model 3 and they also sprayed a foam disinfectant of some type to help deal with the smell. Have you seen that done & do you know what they would use?
Great video! Came in handy for me today after I had Tesla replace the filter 13 months ago, and got that mildewy smell and figured I might as well do it myself. I decided to not unplug the speaker, I had enough room behind it to put in the new filter…since it seemed a bit tricky to unplug it.
@@gimmekithh I did not use an evaporator cleaner, and initially I felt perhaps I should have. Immediately after changing the filter the mildewy smell was faint, but still present. The AC was set to recirculating the air, I put it on high for a few minutes and then set it to fresh air coming in from the outside for about a 10 minute drive. Went back to recirculating the air, and the mildewy smell is no longer present. It’s a 2021 MY by the way.
@@hp-fx9pv Thank you for the reply! I just replaced the filters today, will see how it does. If the smell is still faint like what you said, I will do circulate AC 5 minutes, fresh air for 10 minutes like you, and back to recirculating.
I just did this 22 MYLR. I also didn't have to remove the speaker, but I did remove the light. This allowed me to move that piece out of the way. I did find this to be a huge PITA because my filters were jammed inside there. The bottom one took a lot of force to get loose. I'm sure it'll be easier next time since I was more careful about placing the filters but if round 2 goes like that I will never do it again. The HEPA was considerably easier to change and honestly after 2 years of driving I don't think I even needed to change mine. The HEPA was absolutely disgusting though.
Thanks for the video easy and simple install. Your instructions were very detailed and a very smooth removal of all that install of New couldn’t have been easier.
It worked just as displayed for my Tesla 2022 Model Y Long Range vehicle. I was surprised at the old filter. Like in the video, it appeared to be pretty clean. Hopefully, the musty smell goes away. Thank you
Great video. Not sure if this was related to the smell but the bottom filter was poorly installed and air may have been just going around it. It was severally crushed on one side
Great how to video, what i did when i removed the kick plate part was i didn't remove the speaker or light plug, just installed it behind the kick plate < it slides right in saved 2 minutes.
The screw that holds the air filters cover on the 2023 model is on top of the panel not on the bottom as in the 2022 model.. Just a little more tricky to remove..
Why not use evaporator cleaner prior to putting in the new filters? Is this not a thing anymore? Only asking because I’m about to do my cabin air filters for the first time as well. But I always thought you wanted to clean the system as well, no?
2022 Model Y LR. Took me a while, but this works 🤗 I couldn't disconnect the wiring to the fan, and also couldn't completely open the kick panel at one connecting point toward the center bottom, but that didn't get in the way. Thank you for the video! Having the tools ready help (flat head screwdriver and T-20 screwdriver works for my case)🤗
You made no remarks about the direction (fwd/aft) of the filter relative to airflow.. I believe there is a proper orientation for these filters. Yes/No?
Someone may have posted this already. You don't need to completely remove the console side panel. First, remove the plastic panel underneath the glove box, as shown in the video. Then, disconnect the two wires from the glove box panel and set aside. Next, reach up to the right of the center console panel and pull back just enough (about halfway) of the holding clips to access the filter door compartment and filters. That's it. Replace the filters, reattach the door with the screw, and place the console panel by pressing in on all of the clips. Again, you don't need to completely detach the console panel. This makes this job much more manageable.
@@lisalee3490 I’m not sure since I did mine myself. It isn’t a difficult job - just physically challenging for an old man. You can purchase the filters from Tesla (there are 2). Anyone with mechanical abilities should be able to do it after seeing the video.
Holy cow. Could not get the clip holding the speaker to come off. Had to remove the speaker by the screws. Also the largest clip in the center of the side panel did not want to release. Had to reach in with pliers to squeeze the backside of the clip to make it release. 2022 MYLR
Tesla has totaly changed the design for 2023 model y LR(berlin) the plastic cover under the glov box are now hold in place by two tx20 screws instead of plastic clips and has a different design…when unscreved u just need to pry a light force where the plastic panel meets the glove box and its loose. Tesla manual is still showing a guide for this ”old” design…😢
Not sure why everyone disconnects the light and speaker, just to move that piece out of the car. I'd just leave it laying on the floor while I do the filters.
the design have a problem like other cars, when pull out the old one ,easy to drop something to the bottom and pass the new filter, better Check before put the new one😊 !
If you have a 2021 model Y you should let Tesla Service change the filters due to very very poor design flaws that has been fixed in newer models. You should tell Tesla that you max will pay for half an hour for the change. It will take longer even for Tesla but due to the design flaws it is not fair that you should pay for their mistakes

2023 Model Y LR, this worked perfectly, no need to disconnect wiring, plenty of slack to get it out of the way. Thank you!

Worth noting that for RHD versions the access is via the driver's side. I figured that out after dismantling the passenger side 😢.

I did this with a 2022 Tesla performance and it was difficult for me to unsnap every thing but I still got it done thank you
Aug 2024 referenced your video and got the job done at around 40mins. Thank you so much !

Shout out to you man. I just installed my filter and this video made it a breeze!

I just changed mine. It was a breezxe, thanks to you!
I wonder why the oem filters did not have the carbon filter layer like the after market ones? Does it really make a difference?
No. You did an amazing job. Do you use foam cleaner at all?
Good instructions
Awesome thanks! I did it. 2022 Tesla model Y long range

How often you change this filters
Thanks it worked

Worked for my 2021 Y model! Thank you
The screw is either T15 or 20 star screw for the filter latch cover.
What an Excellent video, very helpful for us home Mechanics.
Very well done. Thank you.
do I have to remove the panel under the glove box and the wires?
Wondering the same thing. Seemed really unnecessary.
You don't have to, but removing it provides a bit more clearance to pull out and insert the filters. I've done it both ways.
Make sure to clean the evaporator coils at the same time.
What a shame on this crap design
You made no remarks about the direction (fwd/aft) of the filter relative to airflow.. I believe there is a proper orientation for these filters. Yes/No?
Yes, air flow direction does matter. Both the filters i removed and the new ones i installed are clearly marked on direction to install.
I recall he pointed out the the arrow on the filter points into the car cabin.
He mentioned it at 4:55.
Also, if the tab on the filters is oriented to the top right, it is the proper orientation.
Worked like a charm.. MYLR 💯
Worked fine, 💯
