Love, love, love this filter! It’s self priming which is a must for where I live. The adjustable flow is perfect for my betta. AND has plenty of room to get creative with filtration media. Better than every expensive hob I’ve tried so far.
I'm running twin IQ 60 on my 55 gal goldfish tank...they are trusty great filters!! I've tossed the carbon, and converted them to bio media...I rate these right up there w past Fluval filters I've used....these are quieter, AND self prime! A+++ ❤
The sloped lid makes it look less bulky, so that's nice! And pump inside the water is always best, I totally agree. Love this series of videos; you're doing a great job!
John and Lisa, love your channel. Been a fish hobbiest off and on since mid 70s, and I'll be 70 this year. wish I had your videos then! Keep up the good work!
I've always liked the Tetra Whisper filters. I have a huge double filter extra large cartridge one that is over 20 years old and still going strong.....also, another one with the regular large cartridge that is over 20 year old. Only issue has been where the motor "O" ring seats becomes distorted over the years and I had to seal it with silicone so they won't drip. I always reuse the old cartridge frame to aid in maintaining the bacteria....like the idea of the new bacteria grid, and the motor in the water. Next outside filter I buy will be the Whisper.
Because of your video on Aqueon hang on back filter I bought one for a super red bushy nose Pleco grow out tank. After the cartridge that came with gunked it up.I did add an intake sponge and filled filter with floss .Did have a sponge filter in tank but feeding young Pleco’s just couldn’t keep water clear with out hang on.It was fun meeting you and talking with you at Aquatic Experience ,you still haven’t got me to get a cichlid .But love your videos
After your video LFS had them with rewards program for ten dollars.live where we get frequent power outages and didn’t want one that the motor wasn’t under water.
Thank you for telling me about the housing on this filter I thought it was broken also and was worried about electrocution I was going to take it back and then I watched your video and decided it was ok. I appreciate you
I have the IQ 60, I got a good size coarse prefilter on the intake, and put some medium density sponges inside with some quilt batting some matrix and a little bag of purigen. it makes a pretty good job.
Great review and that's a great filter. Having the pump in the water keeps it cooler which adds to longevity. Thanks for all the videos and all you do for us. Happy Holidays to and yours.
Love the pump being inside the tank - my AquaClear will not restart when power goes off and I end up having to twist the motor back and forth to ‘snap’ it into position a few times to get it to start again - even after pouring water into the box to help it before plugging it in. I also don’t like how, when the power stops, my AquaClear deliberately empties all of the water out of the box part where the pump is. There may be a good reason for that (nitrifying bacteria might die if stuck in stagnant water with no continual flow to give it oxygen, maybe??) but it’s a lot to remember to put water back in it to try not to burn the pump motor out.. several times I thought it had died completely, and it’s only a couple of months old. That said, I DO LOVE that there is so much room in this one for diy tweaks on the media.. Pump inside the tank is a must for my next filter choice - along with the wiggle room for media hacks. 😊 Thanks for sharing all of these things!
Same probs with Aqua Clear. Large box is great for varying media but the noise this filter makes is too much at times.Paricularly micro bits of gravel, sand or rock getting in the impeller chases. Ugh.This Whisper IQ avoids that as an issue.
I love my tetra overhang filter pumps. Few of mine been going strong for over 9 years now! Thanks for the new review on tetras new updated overhang definitely like the new changes. Cheers from California and happy holidays!
Lisa N.J. Awesome Lisa that’s good to know! It’s not always about new and high end stuff. Some companies can make things last a lifetime you just need to take proper care of it. Thanks for the feedback and have a Happy New Years as well!
Can't say that Whisper is false advertisement. The aquaclears, and recently marineland penguins are notorious for being loud and unfixable. The seachem tidal 35 is getting there too
I know this vid is sorta on the old side but glad I found it! I was all set to make a 2 hour round trip to return it for the very same reason you said…I thought the motor housing was broken! So so glad I found this before i did! Thanks 😊
Hi John…with over 35 years of fish keeping, I’ve had a number of HOB filters, but my favorite has been the AquaClear110. I have two of them on my 75 gallon African cichlid aquarium and the water quality is excellent. I’d love to have the one you’re giving away to put on a new 40 gallon that I’m presently setting up. Many thanks for doing your videos. John Bravo Audubon PA
Great review. I agree about the placement of the motor. Perfer it in the water for quiet filter. Thought it was awesome about how it moved ( motor) with the rubber to deal with vibrations. Thank you for showing this filter.
Like the Whispers. Still run a 60 I got back in early 2001 on my 40 breeder along with a sponge filter. Never had any issues and it's very quiet..and has always restaterd with no priming ever. No complaints here. I do hot rod it with sponge. and some filter floss for polishing.
"Who ever puts their filters upside down,I don't even know why I'm doing this? " LOL. Too funny. And it comes as an added bonus to another comprehensive, mucho excellent review! Gracias!
I love these filters. Bought a ac 110 and I'm going BACK to my whisper iq 60's. I can get 2 of the whisper IQ 60 for the price of one ac 110. I prefer the front to back flow with no bypass till the filters need cleaned. I replace the blue tray with foam and filter floss. The flow control is actually functional and two filters give me a filter on both sides of my tank vs just one side. My aquaclear has has to much filter media bypass even with fresh media. Plus the aquaclear bottom up flow blows my filter material up if not weighted down. Bought the ac 110 thi king I'd love it and I hate it. 😅😅😅 Great review John. P.S. the new ac 110 didn't put the pump in the tank or really change much.😢😢😢 I was hoping they would've.
Thank you. I was worried about that gap on the motor. Thinking water would get into somewhere it shouldn’t be. I even brought one back to pet store and the lady at register said she would get the senior expert that worked there to come look at it. He was baffled too. So he was no expert. I took several boxes off the shelf and they all had the gap. So the expert said they must have got a bad batch. So they sold me a different type filter. But the motor died after 3 weeks. So I have the Tetra whisper filter now. Will not worry any longer. I would stress that those pre filter foam tubed should be placed on the long stem that sucks up the water because when I went from gravel to sand, some sand made its way into that tube and no matter what I did in an effort to clean it out, it still makes a loud grinding noise from time to time. So if you have the pre filter foam over the suction tube the motor will be protected and remain quiet for a lot longer. Thanks again for the great informative video -Karen
I have my Whisper 30 for more than 15 years, just change the cartridges and clean it. used it with a sponge or with a nylon bag with some media if I want to remove some chemical or modify the ph. May this new one all dark won't develop algae inside the tubes...Mine has semi clear plastic tubes and some algae grows inside. Generally remove the top cover since it started to rattle and add some more noise. Never gave me problems...sometimes prime itself some times need a little help if the screen entrance is blocked with debris. I prefer to be able to remove the cover completely. The new penguin pro doesn't have a removable cover, and the screen at the end of the tube is large but look flimsy (easy to break). The material of the new cartridges look and feel cheap. Provably will try this filter rather than the Tidal 35 because of the lack of the intake tube. I like the surface skim option of the new Penguin pro (mid level intake)... I'm undecided between this Whisper IQ or the Penguin pro 175...I have a Bio-wheel pro 30 with a Marineland power head which the impeller broke once, but once replaced it's still running. I don't think Marineland make just the bio-Wheel to be operated with a power head since they incorporated to all the filters. I also added a Whisper bio-filter foam along with API Bio-chem stars to have more biological filtration surface to the old Whisper 30....Nice reviews of all the filters...waiting for the Penguin pro line review...
I have an old tetra in my 45. I cut sponge for the filter. My tank is crystal clear and after 3 weeks it tests great for all the nitrogen. I do us a diy gravel vac a couple times a week
Awesome review. Just purchased one having to replace a double hosed tank that my cousin passed along to me. Time to give my tank some loving after being lackadaisical during lockdown.
Surprised how the Tetra made some major improvements in their filter or at least the IQ series. Makes them definitely worth buying. Happy Holidays to the KGTropicals family!
If not for this video I would not have known about this filter. I have the TopFin 10 that came in a kit. I hate the noisy bastard on my Beydah tank. It sits on the nightstand next to my bed. Ordered the 10 gal version of this filter just now. THANKS!

Thanks for the video John. Well done as always. I bought the Tetra IQ 60 for my 50 gallon acrylic tank. It is smaller in size than the Marineland ML Pro 375. However, I can place it on the tank with the motor attached. It does make some noise. I am used to my Oase canister filter which is super quiet. I found if I filled the tank to about 1 inch from the top, that stops the splashing noise. Over all not a bad design. I give it a B.
I watched your video about the Penguin150 and decided to buy it a few days ago & I LOVE it!!! Thanks for being so informative John!!! I have a 20g tank but would love to eventually upgrade to a 75g once I'm past the beginner fish keeper stage! You got my attention concerning the Fluval !! Lol 😍🐠
I know I'm late. LOL But I love these filters. I don't use the cartridges. I use Cory's coarse sponges, and I also like to use purigen here and there when I need it. I have a couple of those little bio-ball things shoved in too. I use these on all my bigger tanks. I love that the motor is inside, so in case of a power failure, I don't' have to worry about it re-starting if I'm not home.
I just got an aqueon quiet filter for a new 15 gal tank. I called tech support 2ce because it's noisy. They said to take the motor out and put vaseline on it. It made it worse. I like the tetra whisper for my 10 gallon, it's virtually silent.
exciting to see the new designs of so many filters, Aqua Clear is one of my favorites, I have one of first, a Aqua Clear 2000 same similar as a AC500/110 in a brown color :)

Just got the IQ 20 and like you, at first thought that gap between the motor and the top was not supposed to be there. I am glad you thought the same thing. I have had Tetra products in the past and never had a real problem with any of them. They seem to be very reliable, which is a #1 priority with me and not very expensive like some others. You did mention the large compartment with the bio-bag goes and would like to know what you could put in there if you remove the blue plastic cage thing. Would you add ammo chips, or ? Thanks!
I like it because of that filter cartridge You can rinse it out clean and reuse them over and over again. I get rid of the carbon and add in the bio rings . You just dump them from one into the new one and wash the bag and reuse them
I have one as part of a kit seems to work well. I am still cycling the tank been thru a 4 hour power outage. Restarted well I am returning to the hobby after 25 years away. I would not mind winning this one.
Hey from Denmark. A lot of talk. You people look fine. How are your fish? Do they also look fine?. How big now? (Discus). Have you forgotten that it's all is about the fish... 😀 happy new year.
The one I run in my 20 gallon I didn’t change the cartridge in a while the other day I realized that it was over flowing so I learned a lesson that day
I have a question I’m getting a 5 gallon tetra tank and it comes with a smaller whisper filter. My question is after cycling how often do you change the filter cartridge and will it mess up the balance in the tank. The filter comes with no sponges or anything so I feel as soon as you take the cartridge out then your taking almost everything good out
You can use these filters twice to three times. Just rinse them out in clean but seasoned aquarium water. That will allow some of that good bacteria to remain within the cartridge, so you won't be re starting the cycling process from the get go. You can also squeeze some plastic or ceramic bio balls or noodles behind the filter cartridge.Just keep them there and that will enhance your bio filtration, too.
Nice to see manufacturers revising their designs to have self priming filters. The latest Marineland Penguin Pro and Emperor Pro filters have changed, and now Tetra (which is owned by Marineland's parent company) has as well. I wonder if Hagen will follow suit and revise the AquaClear and C series filters.
I love the videos! Huge fan. I've gone from one tank to 3 tanks. I've learned a Ton! Thank you guys for everything! Your "ten things" line of vids has opened my eyes.
I've been using my filter that came with the tank since November and I didn't realize until I turned it off today to change the extention cord just how loud it was. It also never really ever worked so I ordered this one and hopefully it'll work better
It's interesting to see how HOB filters have changed now compared to how they were done 15-20 years ago. Seems basic now but almost no one did them back in the day, I wonder how much information on the internet has influenced those changes, e.g. the ladders for beneficial bacteria.
I just got this same one for my 20 gallon tank & it’s been working well, it’s nice and quiet but I do agree with you about the filter cartridge 😂 it fits on there weird haha
Love, love, love this filter! It’s self priming which is a must for where I live. The adjustable flow is perfect for my betta. AND has plenty of room to get creative with filtration media. Better than every expensive hob I’ve tried so far.

Thank you for reviewing these filters. It does help when trying to decide which to try.
I have the biggest model and I use some sponge cut outs and lava rock instead those cartridges and it works terrific, and the plus, it is quiet.
@Drinking Water Yes, it is, you can get it at Petco. The IQ 60 is a nice filter for tanks below 50 gal

Nice filter John
Nice to see manufacturers revising their designs to have self priming filters.
The latest Marineland Penguin Pro and Emperor Pro filters have changed, and now Tetra (which is owned by Marineland's parent company) has as well.
I wonder if Hagen will follow suit and revise the AquaClear and C series filters.
I'm in need of a filter right now so why not!
Inside motors are such a bonus
Great content, I love that you are reviewing filters. I wouldn't mind this one for my 20 gallon. Gotta replace the hob on it soon.
This filter works great. Especially when the power goes out, the filter just starts back up.
I thought about trying one of these. Thanks for the very helpful information.
Have always liked the tetra hob's,thanks for the review!! Great info in your videos!! Thank's!!
I've used Whisper filters for over 30 years. They are very reliable.
I love the videos! Huge fan. I've gone from one tank to 3 tanks. I've learned a Ton! Thank you guys for everything! Your "ten things" line of vids has opened my eyes.
Compared to the Aqueon Quiet Flow 30 which is the better filter? I want to make a purchase one but I'm confused.
Thanks for the reviews, it makes it easier to understand them. Happy holidays.
THANK YOU JOHN FOR DOING WHAT YOU DO. I ENJOY EVERY VIDEO AND TANK TALK THAT YOU AND LISA MARIE MAKE FOR US
I've been using my filter that came with the tank since November and I didn't realize until I turned it off today to change the extention cord just how loud it was. It also never really ever worked so I ordered this one and hopefully it'll work better
@Drinking Water pretty well
I think the filter is good enough I win it it be great thanks for your videos they’re really help me a lot.
It's interesting to see how HOB filters have changed now compared to how they were done 15-20 years ago. Seems basic now but almost no one did them back in the day, I wonder how much information on the internet has influenced those changes, e.g. the ladders for beneficial bacteria.
Awesome review
I need a HOB with flow control for the shrimp. Meanwhile, I have went with a sponge filter. Great video as always!
Awesome series, so glad I've found this series, I've been looking into starting up a quarantine tank and been trying to find a great filter
Seachem Tidal is the king of hob filters
Enjoying the series; wouldn’t mind winning this one!
Very good review that seems like a very good filter
Not having worked in a pet shop in 20 years , nice to see what is out there these days.
Tetra makes some decent filters.
Wouldn't mind checking this filter out in one of my aquariums. Great series on HOBs.
Looks like a decent filter for someone starting out
If you like the motor in the water, you should try one of the Marina Slim filters. I find them superior to this and some other. Try it!
I just got this same one for my 20 gallon tank & it’s been working well, it’s nice and quiet but I do agree with you about the filter cartridge 😂 it fits on there weird haha
Like the reviews pump in water is a good thing, disposable cartridges go in trash too expensive and have carbon which I don't run.
I want it😁
LOUD support on this Quiet 🤫 filter vid.
I like the aqua clear best.
