To respond to cottons question, the reason the meat for Cows, Pigs and Sheep (Beef, Pork and Mutton), are different from the animal name but Chicken, Rabbit and other meats aren't, is because those meats were more often eaten by nobility, and thus the meats where called by the name of the animal in the nobles language ( usually old french, beouf, porc, mouton), but the chicken and rabbit meats were more often eaten by commoners and thus got the commoner language (old english). The animals kept the names of the commoners who raised them, but the meats got the names of the people who ate them.

Well some useless facts since you asked. The cow vs beef thing comes from when the norman french ruled england for 350 years, a lot of norman french words were added to english, beef was french and cow was english, pork and pig are the same thing. And chicken does have another name, poultry, a french word. The way the words are used reflects the social structure of the time, the noble normans ate du boeuf and porc while the peasant english ate cow and pig.
18:20 You know, this conversation reminds me of my age-old question of: “Who was the loon that looked at a cow and said: ‘I’m going to drink that!’?” And thus discovered milk.
"Beef" is not called "cow" because of the big ol cultural blender that was the Battle of Hastings. Basically, buncha different castes had different languages and ate different parts of the cow, until it just all became part of the English language.
fun fact: the name for meat and the animal comes from the fact that after the french invaded britian the upper class was replaced by the french. The upper class would be the ones eating meat, so the words for meat come from the french whilst the ones raising the animals were the lower class, thus the names for the animals come from old english. The difference in chicken comes from the fact that chicken was far more common for commoners to consume
19:00 the reason in english that animals we eat have different names depending on if they are the animal or the meat is because due to the norman conquest, the nobility and upper class spoke french. so while the peasantry who dealt with the animals and spoke english gave the animals names, the nobility gave the meat names based on french. why chicken gets to be called chicken in both, i don't know especially since the obvious word that the meat would probably be called does still exist in english (poultry)
Interestingly enough cotton, the reason we have different names for animals and their meat comes from a blending of pretty much old fancy English and peasants english thanks to the battle of Hastings, so that way we have beef poultry mutton and other fancy words along with more casual peasant words such as animal names Anyway chicken is usually referred to as chicken because poultry encompasses multiple birds such as ducks, turkeys, chickens, etc

The actual reason for animals and their meat often have separate names comes from class differences: the nobles never saw the living creatures, and simply named the meat separately.

Now the answer to the beef/chicken question is actually rooted in the very foundations of the English language. You see, way back when the Normans migrated to England they brought with them the words for meat that they wanted to put into English, but the Anglo Saxons didn't like that so the went to war over the whole thing and the Normans won so we got words for meats, but why not chicken? Because as you might imagine it would've been nigh impossible for tenth century Normans to even see a chicken let alone eat one
