  • In this edition of Instant Analysis, USCFootball.com reporters Jack Smith and Shotgun Spratling discuss USC firing defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.
USC announced late Sunday morning that Grinch had been relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator by head coach Lincoln Riley following the Trojans' 52-42 loss to Washington in the Coliseum.
With Grinch out, defensive line coach Shaun Nua and inside linebackers coach Brian Odom will serve as interim co-defensive coordinators. Former defensive analyst and USC safety Taylor Mays will be elevated to an official on-field assistant coach, working with the safety position. Grinch, along with being USC's defensive coordinator, was also the coach previously responsible for working with the safeties.
Shotgun and Jack talk about why USC felt it needed to fire Grinch midseason and what the move means for the Trojans going forward. The two also hit on fan and current player reactions that have emerged online following Grinch's firing.
Jack, Shotgun, and Ryan Abraham will be live at 7 p.m. to break down the move and the Washington loss on Tunnel Vision later tonight.

Grinch shouldn't have accompanied Riley from Oklahoma in the first place. But unfortunately, he did, and he should've been gone at the end of last season at the latest, which means he wasted two seasons for the team. What a truly boneheaded decision Riley has made to retain him up to this point!!

Up the dough to actually get an actual real quality Defensive Coordinator. Tremendously disappointing season after all… can’t believe it with the decently high quality offense and the d can’t stop a single nosebleed. Tremendously disappointing. And 4th to last in power 5 in yards per game allowed with 436 yards allowed per game. They were pretty much at the very bottom defensively and couldn’t drop much further. I suppose it could be just as bad though. A change in coordinator doesn’t necessarily mean improvement. Although, it’d be kind of hard not to given how historically bad the numbers were this season.

(2) Pete Carroll was Brilliant in taking a few minutes before games just to say hello to HS prospects who may be sitting in lower seats. There is NO VIOLATION to say HELLO to someone enjoying the game. (3) Stop focusing only on Mater Dei & St. John Bosco. Talent is Everywhere (i.e. Carlsbad HS has a 6'7 & 6'8 300lbs DL right now, SC missed Fred Warner to Utah from the same area, etc.). th-cam.com/video/ompevuR1644/w-d-xo.html&start_radio=1

It's on both the players and the coaches, to be perfectly honest. There have been so many missed tackles and blown assignments throughout these last 2 seasons as well, and apparently no consequence for the players. Instead, they are encouraged with NIL incentives and such despite poor performances. Players are coddled way too much these days. I remember when growing up in the '80s and '90s. you could see coaches, referees, basically everyone involved with college football keeping the players humble. Once they went pro (those who were good enough to go pro that is), then they could act like spoiled man-children all they wanted.

I wasn't even talking about USC specifically, but rather the whole atmosphere of college football (and probably collegiate sports in general) nowadays. I'm talking about apples, while you want to talk about... IDK, dragons? 🤨🙄
And my point was exactly that. It's not that USC just had terrible coaching from the likes of Riley and Grinch, but the players themselves are not being held accountable for their poor performances! That's why we need old-school coaches, and need to get back to the old ways and keep players humble! Only then will the program improve.

The problem is with USC’s recruiting is Lincoln. Riley doesn’t want to use NIL money for recruits and so Oregon has been beating us for a few years now they’ve been getting all the elite off until lineman from Southern California from Mater Dei and Saint John Bosco and they’re not going to Oregon. They’re going to Washington they’re going to Georgia they’re going to everywhere elsewhere people are paying the money to go there unless Lincoln Riley decides to use some of the NIL money on recruits then it’s not really gonna happen until we’re consecutively winning back to back seasons

The loss to Notre Dame was Caleb Williams' (and by extension, Riley's) fault, not so much the defense's. In fact, Riley deserves a lot of the blame for the team's overall performance this season. They managed to get by the first half of the season because they weren't playing ranked / quality opponents then (with the exception of Arizona who was still kind of getting it together with their back-up QB just starting his second game, and even then they gave 'SC a scare). But in this second half of the season, they are being exposed by better teams, and FAR BETTER coaches!
Riley's up-tempo style of offense, run ALL THE TIME, is simply not a good idea, period. Even Oregon moved away from that style of play after the Chip Kelly / Mark Helfrich years. The reason being is it wears out the WHOLE TEAM and makes them all play more snaps than necessary. Even if the offense succeeds, the drive is over in 2 to 3 minutes. This is very taxing on the defense as they don't get adequate time to rest. And if the offense doesn't succeed, then that just means the defense has to get back out onto the field that much faster! This is just a terrible overall plan. Riley ought to be held accountable for that. He was doing some of the same things in Oklahoma, and fans were noticing it there as well.
And finally, Caleb Williams is overrated too. The only reason he won the Heisman last year is because USC had a relatively easy schedule not having to play Oregon or Washington (and Notre Dame wasn't a good team last year either). The only truly good teams they played were Utah and Tulane, and they lost to Utah twice and the bowl game to Tulane. Caleb holds onto the ball too long hoping for that deep pass opportunity to pad his stats. His athleticism allows him to escape some pursuers trying to sack him, but against a good defense (especially good pass rushers), he can't rely on his usual tricks as often. Anyway, he has been exposed as well, and will likely be leaving after this season, because this team will get hammered by good defenses week after week once it moves to the Big 10!

USC offense is 2nd as a team in total points per game… and yet the season is already over for them. Crazy that if they had just a plain bad defense ranked like 90th in the country they’d probably be 9-1 rn with a chance still at the Pac title and playoff berth, but they literally had the worst def among power 5 teams. Crazy to waste a generational QB talent going 7-5. Wow.

Ken Norton Jr. Should be an option. He coached at USC during the Pete Carroll era during the last dynasty. He has coached for years in the NFL in Seattle and San Francisco. He was a defensive coordinator in the NFL too. How about Michigan State's former head coach Mel Tucker. Ken Norton Jr. coached and recruited current USC DB coach Taylor May's and many of the NFL hall of famers that played linebacker at USC duringthePete Carroll era. He was a phenomenal recruiter too. Mel Tucker was considered a defensive coordinator with genius level expertise prior to becoming a successful head coach prior to this year. Those two should be at the top of the list honestly. I also think they would do well with Alabama. Mel Tucker could easily be the heir apparent for the Alabama Crimson . or Assistant Head Coach under Riley at USC. Just saying. Does this mean we won't have the Grinch for Christmas? Unfortunately, the other half of the problem is the play calling by Lincoln Riley. He refuses to depend on the running game which has an enormous impact on clock management. This means the defense will still be on the field more than the offense no matter who they have as defensive coordinator.

I’d like them to hire a NFL experienced coach. Donald D’Alesio a defensive assistant under Andy Reid could be a good fit. He has experience as a college DC and coaches DB for the Chiefs. He’s young and should understand how to recruit.

Lincoln Riley has never had a defense, e er. Anywhere. He fired Grinch to cover himself. Riley is to Blake. When you understand his goal is to outscore the other team, you understand he was a Mike Leach disciple. This is smoke and mirrors.

Alex Grinch is not the root cause of USC's defensive woes, but keep drinking that sweet-sweet very expensive Lincoln Riley kool-aid USC. LR just tossed his "best friend" under the bus to save his own ass for a little while longer. That man has no spine, no character, and no respect for defensive football.

@shameless1047 OU's fine....Yes, going through a rough patch right now, but they are about where I thought they would be year 2 after getting gutted and trashed by the great offensive mastermind currently holding the top spot at USC.

Just goes to show a unacceptable season & a bad loss can come with GOOD NEWS. The Grinch is on his way out of Whoville & little "Cindy-Lou Who" who is no more than two along with all the other USC fans will not have to suffer another stolen Christmas by the Grinch. Lincoln Riley is still under the gun in my book though. He's the Head Coach & he is the one that continues to abandon the run game, has not shown to be a solid recruiter & is the guy that brought Grinch back after last year. So Hopefully we get a solid top of the line DC but this is only the first step. We need to get more than just a few top Skill Players on the Offense as far as recruiting goes to be competitive & LR & his staff need to show they go out & do just that otherwise as a lifelong USC FAN I want COACH O back because in my mind he got done wrong when he was let go as the interim Head Coach at the end of that season. I know I am not the only USC FAN that feels that way. So lets see now what LR does from here on out NO MORE EXCUSES. If this dont really improve the program & turn USC around I am going to be the 1st one calling for LR head & screaming for USC to make amends to COACH O & bring him back. I still got LR on probation lets see what happens both in Recruiting & on the field next year. THIS COULDN'T BE BETTER NEWS!!!!!!!! FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!
