    Kurt jokes at the beginning about wanting Lead Belly’s guitar but it’s so expensive. The guitar Kurt is holding has become the most expensive guitar sold at auction.

      Sadly, true... pretty sure it's the same one he picked up at a thrift store, or garage sale to record Polly on... for like $35 dollars, that never stayed in key... actually, I think that's not the same one, but sold for even more than that one. I think Kurt would have been a little disgusted by that though.

      Polly guitar he used was a $30 thrift store guitar that had wore out strings so it sounded very flat and duct tapede E6 string screw so it kept in tune as long polly sessions on Nevermind lasted.

    I think one thing that goes unsaid is that Kurt was great at playing the guitar on-time while singing complex lines that fall on the riff in weird amazing ways... Come As You Are is a good example, as simple as it is. Would be curious to hear your take on the "About a Girl" performance from this unplugged...the rasp on that is crazy

    This must be one of the best live performances EVER! He put SO MUCH feeling into it, it's like he's just fully showing it all out there (there's a moment just before the last 'niiight throough', when the camera focus on his face...one second that delivers a whole lot hahah).
    I've also tried this one, but in a lower key...it kinda loses a bit of the feeling, but it's just so fun to put myself in Kurt's place and just let it all out, less technical, just full on feelings! Thank you for this, Chris! I'll check out your version now, I'm sure it'll be amazing!

  • @followfornothing
    @followfornothing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    It's ironic that you would say that Kurt was "deadpan" on this particular song because this is the last song of the night and this is that song that Kurt gave the infamous look to the camera that made everybody believe that Kurt gave into defeatism and made everyone believe after the "so-called suicide" kind of hard not to think about it after your wife goes around telling everybody that you're always depressed and suicidal) the gasp of hesitation that Kurt gives before he ends the song sends shivers down your spine and makes the hair on your arms stand on end like goosebumps also that feeling could be compared to that of a death rattle.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Eek.. Interesting and good insight here! My 'deadpan' comment was based on the observation that he's not straining his face or pretentiously playing to the camera in any way. He's in his own moment that he's creating. But ya, that baggage with his own wife... HITS HARD

    Chris, I really enjoy your vids and have def learned a lot from watching. I have a request, Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon had a very original sounding voice. Not just high but a head voice, specifically on their second album Soup, especially live that was just amazing. And he did it effortlessly as well. I would really love to know if a head voice can be improved upon like screaming and belting or a chest voice can. Or is a good head voice, like Shannon's just something you're born with? Thanks in advance, I'm a big fan

    Here is an interesting suggestion, could you analyse Jonsi’s voice the Icelandic singer of Sigus Ros. Very much like Thom Yorke with a very unique head voice. Really interested to see your take on it.

    Hey Chris, this was very informative. I subscribed to your channel recently when you did an analysis of Holy Diver by Dio. That cinched it for me! However, since then I haven't seen one video from you that offers any analysis or explanation of how to sing like any of the great rock vocalists of the 70s and 80s.
    I like the way you explain things. I think you're an excellent teacher, so please realize I say this out of respect and a desire to be genuinely helpful:
    There are legendary rock vocalists like Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, David Coverdale, Blackie Lawless, Sebastian Bach, John Arch and countless others who I've seen get little or no mention on your channel. I like many vocalists of the 90s, especially Phil Anselmo, but in my opinion, to focus in on one decade so closely with only occasional looks at singers from earlier decades comes at the expense of availing your channel of the tremendous wellspring of knowledge that would come from taking some more time to analyze those rock legends of earlier times, all of whom with wonderful things to offer.
    I love learning all sorts of rock vocal techniques. I find it absolutely fascinating. At the same time, I also find it somewhat scary that so many of these vocalists have lost considerable ability over the years, Phil Anselmo being a prime example. Chris Cornell experienced a vocal decline in the later years of his career, when he was still a relatively young man.
    Does expending the effort to sing in extreme styles such as hyper-compression inevitably take a toll on our vocal cords? James Hetfield isn't singing with the intensity he once did. Can we continue to use these extreme vocal techniques into our 50s and 60s without a loss in quality of sound, or is some vocal decline in middle age inevitable in extreme singing?

      Thanks so much for the comment and thoughtful suggestions and insights Russell! I definitely plan on diving into more of the amazing vocals of the 80s. Those voices continue to be some of the greatest from a technical and inspirational standpoint. I've done videos on Sammy Hagar, Dio, Halford, Geddy Lee, and of course, Freddie Mercury. There are two reasons I've focused on the 90s and later era singers more on the channel so far, although I'm always peppering in new things to see how they do:
      1. I hit my teens just as Soundgarden released Superunknown and Kurt died. This music is in my blood and I'm so very passionate about it.
      2. Probably because of number 1, those who regular resonate with my content here on TH-cam seem particularly drawn to 90s and later music. With the exception of Queen, the other videos I've done on 80s era vocals have not performed very well. That doesn't mean they won't... Stuff is always changing, but in efforts to connect with my growing audience and teach material that gets watched, used and valued, I've tried to hone in on what it seems like most people really resonate with.
      As with all styles of music and singing, it is OVERUSE and ABUSE that causes vocal problems. You're right, lots of these singers from the 90s are either dead or can't sing nearly the same anymore. But look at guys like Ian Thornley and Jimmy Gnecco. WOW... Incredible range and power and they have had long and consistent singing careers. Cornell's alcohol and drug problems, as well as overuse and bad technique on the road caused earlier-than-some issues. It doesn't mean that we can't learn from his techniques and do them in moderation, safely and in the context of lots of other great ideas inspired by great singers.
      Screaming is the same way. Anything done too much or without other lifestyle aspects in mind can be dangerous. Think of it like running. Because people can't run as long or as fast as they get older, does that mean we shouldn't run? NO. We can learn how to run well... Enjoy it... Do it in moderation, and accept that we all age. I've certainly run into this physically with sports and other athletic training. I've abused my body a little in certain ways... but overall have had a good long run of rewarding physical training and exertion, and I hope for many more years to come.
      But there are things that just can't do the same way that I did in my 20s and early 30s. But there are some things I can do better! Things change.
      Cornell said this same sort of thing in an interview later in his life: That his range had changed and his voice felt differently, but that he could interpret a melody and be more free to express than he has ever felt.
      I think, in general, the 80s era vocalists did a better job of exercising moderation given the techniques they focused on... And they took better care of themselves (some of them... I realize that's a huge generalization).
      Look at Michael Sweet!! Sammy Hagar, Dio, Tate... YEP... Lots of them were or are just continually incredible! All this to say... Stay tuned!! There will be more from the golden era of incredible mixed voice singing soon!! Thanks again for subbing to the channel and for your care to bring this issue up in the first place!

      @@chrisliepe Thank you, Chris! I really appreciate you addressing the thoughts I had and going into that Kind of depth in your responses to each of them.
      That you were just hitting your teenage years around '94 and that it led you to be especially into the music of that decade is certainly understandable. I went to high school in the mid 80s, so I grew up listening to singers like Ronnie James Dio, Geoff Tate and Rob Halford. I got into playing electric guitar in 1984 and have played ever since. I've only gotten into singing much more recently and a lot of that has to do with the bar being set so high in the 80s for vocal range that I thought: "I'll never be able to hit those kind of notes, so I'm better off leaving singing to people who have a natural gift for having an incredible range and great tone."
      It's only been in the last couple years that I decided to get into singing anyway. I found I enjoy it too much to not do it! I wanted to teach myself to sing and I went as far as I could until I reached a point where I found I needed instruction to take it further. After looking around at various vocal coaches on the internet, I found your videos explain things in a way that I especially like. You provide impressive amounts of substance in your videos and explain things in a feel-oriented way that resonates with me far better than any other approaches I've come across.
      Just today I found a video of yours titled "First Thing To Do After Hurting Your Voice (And What NOT To Do) where you address the idea that "there's a lot of paranoia that goes along with your voice not feeling right after you've overdone it" and how the fear that goes along with it can negatively impact one's recovery time. That video seemed custom made for me! I found it to be such a quality piece of advice that is so pertinent to me, that I'm inspired to look into your free course as well as any further instructional things you may have available for someone in my position.
      Keep up the great work!

      @@russellspear6188 That video about fear and vocal recovery was made because I used to struggle SO badly with that... It would paralyze me from a creative standpoint cause I was so afraid I'd screwed things up. But once I learned how to really lean into feel-based singing... I can honestly say, this paranoia has completely left me... Even after a long couple days of pushing my voice. Keep in touch as you go through my free course (you'll have my email now) and I look forward to possible working with you on a deeper level in the near future!

    I wonder if Kurt’s love of Bobcat Goldthwait was related to their shared vocal abandon. Totally different arts, but same kind of artists if that makes sense. Listening to your take on a Kurt’s technique (no offense, you’re freaking incredible) totally reminded me of Bobcat if Bobcat sang.
