Good evening! And thank you so much for helping us to over 9,200 subscribers! I'm really grateful for all the support, and there are some surprises in store on the channel to come in December - so stay tuned :)
This evening, we're going for a walk around another fascinating Calder Valley town, Sowerby Bridge, which we briefly mentioned was settled as far back as the Viking age. That's borne out in the town's name, which, originally means 'farmstead by the muddy ground', or 'Saur-by' in Old Norse. The muddy ground in this case was likely the swampy River Calder, which was much wider and slower at the time the Vikings were in the area!

I wish you best of luck with the move! Yorkshire is indeed a spectacular part of the world, and with so many great places within touching distance of Wakey among other cities :)
Thank you so much for watching!

      @@LetsWalkUK thanks
I’m looking to move next year around April / May time now as it’s not the right time to move and not a lot of properties about for my budget
But I know that I will be going up - and be better for it much cheaper ,,, I wanna be nearer the A1 rather than the M1
The areas I’m looking at are Knottingley - Darlington - Featherstone - Normanton

Sowerby Bridge was my home town until the mid 1980s.

Absolutely! It always amazes me just how much history there is to be found in such a small area, even on just one main road you can uncover the story of an entire town, and an entire region :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Unfortunately, you didn't show my town to its best advantage, the piece you showed was the worst part where all the shop fronts need refurbing, and they mak SB look grubby, you didn't go to the other end of Wharf Street where there are amazing restaurants and bars, also the canal basin where millions of pounds have been spent.

My walk starts the Navigation and ends at the Puzzle Hall Inn. Two old Pubs much more interesting than the Blind Pig. 🙂

We like Yorkshire nice to get a little sight seeing.
I especially love the old name “Farmstead” by the muddy ground.

That's lovely to hear! Indeed Sowerby Bridge has all the trappings of a classic Yorkshire town, and its Viking-esque name is a nice cherry on top of the cake :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

The "old Town Hall" was never actually used for that purpose. It was built by a speculator (with two wings either side of the clock tower). The old Sowerby Bridge Urban District Council refused to buy it and it's last use was by Lloyds Bank. There are now plans to convert it into an Indian restaurant.

Interesting to know! But even without the heritage of an old Town Hall, the building certainly has the grandeur of a great centre of town life - hopefully it's a good Indian restaurant when it opens :)

No not another indian restaurant that's the last thing sowerby bridge needs ffs

Ha ha that's an interesting comparison! The rustic industrial past certainly is a common trait - as are those hills which make walking around town a good bit of exercise :)
Thank you so much for watching - I do hope you enjoyed this video!

It is a pity that street movie theaters are gone , like Regent, ( 3 min), but ,as described, it was closed already in the 70´s , long before the street theaters were gone. So, with this one , it must has been that this part of central street went in decay and caused it to change to nightclub. Learning with L´Walk , PHD reporter on England.

I agree! Although cinemas may not have the same demand as they did back in the '30s and '40s, those very central, art-deco screens seem like a wonderful heart of the community - at least we can still see the hallmarks of them today :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
