I've been a fan for years now, but up to this day I never knew that he has his own modified trumpet with one extra valve to play quarter notes, which are used in Arabic music. A real eye opener to me, it explains in a way how he can sound like that.
Ive been studying makams for a few years now on trumpet, not all, but like 10 makams with microtonal notes can be achieved by alternate fingering on the trumpet. Lets say you want to play a microtonal E then instead of playing it with the normal fingering use only the third valve to play the microtonal E. Its a little bit flatter then the normal fingering. You can also lip alot of these notes, purposely intonate them lower. If you search for Rast Makam or Huseyni Makam on google theres tons of examples and trumpet players you can watch how they do it. If you like, there is an English book on the market by Murat Aydemir, its really cheap and very clear on how and what makams are with tons of examples on 2 cd´s. The book is called the Makam Guide.
Magnifique : Ibrahim Maalouf et François Delporte nous transportent .. PS Je serai curieux de savoir quel ampli utilise par François Delporte ? Sublime: Ibrahim Maalouf and François Delporte transport us .. PS I am curious to know what amp uses François Delporte?
+Alain Chatignon It looks a lot like a Fender Bandmaster but the colors don't match... hope someone is able to identify it because the sound is excellent!

Thanks! I've been wondering about this.
