Mastering Misery - Part 3: Summit

- With two afflictions in place, along with a new backpack and a hacksaw, it's time to Summit. Usually, I need to rest in the bunker or the alcove, but we are swimming in energy boosters, so perhaps just this time... go straight there? It's cold, though. Like... really cold!

I just hit day 100 on my misery run, and I used the recipes to heal. I get that it might not be intended, but I found it immersive and fun that there were a couple of rare sources of healing (through delicious food!)
Which recipes? I heard it was just one, the meat stew recipe from the cabin in miners folly
@dallashill23 the other one I know is Lily's pancakes. Save your peaches and your syrup!
@@CaptainMcRanglerDanlger interesting I wonder if the devs were already aware. 🧐 I hope they don’t patch it out. Seems like a fun mechanic, and it encourages the use of these recipes which is pretty cool.
@@dallashill23 Totally. I love that it encouraged the usage of the recipes. I hope it stays as well.
Congratz on the 100!
The thing that always opens my eyes when I watch your videos is how far you are willing to walk for a particular item. Here you are playing Misery, and you consider it no problem to walk across multiple regions to get the backpack or the satchel or any other particular thing that will give you an advantage.
you get so much more than one item tho by going along the map. one of the biggest problems new players face is being unwilling to leave behind their current loot because they worry or because they don't know the map well enough to head straight towards the major loot locations. By doing this trip to the gold mine, Zak managed to get not only 5kg extra capacity from the backpack but also cattails to maintain the extra 5kg from well fed. The birch bark from the forest is a lifeline when constantly draining your health in order to travel further and that's why this journey in particular is so easy when compared to the far territory, or HRV, or maybe even BI. You get as well saplings and guts and hides, and the coffee and the clothing from the summit is worth it by itself. Journeying is definitely what the game is made for.
I’m on Day 5 off my third ever attempt at Interloper. I have not cheated death and I am curing 4 guts, birch and maple and I’ve found the Heavy Hammer. This is by far the most successful interloper run I’ve ever tried.
I try 10 or 11 times. and at last i was at day 38 and hadn't made any arrows or any clothes yet, i was hopeless and just about to quit. I suddenly realized that I had enough matches and a heavy hammer in my hand. I spent all my effort making arrows, axe and knive. exactly that save is now 480 days old. make a plan and don't give up. hope you the best.
I can’t believe you walked onto crystal lake with three scent bars without being *swarmed* by wolves and the bear.
Its likely because of the route I took, which made their pathing awkward
55:55 Contrary to popular belief, you can actually read with a headache/pain. Strangely though, you can't read with a sprain.
Is that a ravaged moose in ur pfp??!
@@themeemster2211 It is! A rare spawn in HRV.
If broken body occurs and you lose the well fed bonus, the 10% condition also disappears. If you get the well fed bonus again, your condition bar increases but the 10% condition bonus remains. In other words, if your calories fall to zero for just one second, you immediately take 10% damage. That's probably a bug.
I keep dying before day 10. Mainly because of calories depleting so incredibly fast. There is not enough food or rabbits for me before I reach the forge with a hammer. I would need at least 4 rabbits or 4 cans of food a day to make it managable. And most points of interest have little to no food.
Edit: You find so much more food with the DLC. It is a tiny bit unfair, because you need so much calories in Misery mode. It feels like it's balanced with the DLC in mind.
Yeah honestly I have zero idea why they made the frontier cooking system only available with the dlc. It seems very unbalanced, both due it making free players have a harder time and also because it basically has to be added on top of the normal game balance it just is extra food. I think it would be more well balanced if they rebalanced it and included that with the main food loot table. Basically replace some normal food spawns with the frontier food which would also I think accomplish the goal of actually forcing players to cook to survive.
I wouldn't mind if the pies or stim healed as they are finite.
Otherwise you may want to use all your stim before the final affliction.
The 5% heal with well fed is not a lot either 5% every 3 days compared to all the damage you can take otherwise (maybe it would be +2.5% with the affliction which reduce heal).
You forgot to use your thermos when going back from the summit and then from the mountaineer hut but the warmth is draining so fast I'm not sure it's worth it.
the way you’re so chill with the bear on you omg. gotta love knowing the animal mechanics
21:49 You might also encounter a bear here, not only wolves, sometimes he wanders this far from his den.
I always encouter that big guy when I'm exactly at this point lol
Love the high production value and helpfulness of your videos. Thank you
You said “REH-shi”!! Can’t tell you how happy that made me! You’re the best, Zak!!!
I had a blizzard (in the early days) that lasted almost 3 days. Thought of eating my socks. lol Great series!
If I was in a survival situation I would 100% drink straight from the thermos. I wouldn't be bothered with pouring it in a cup.
Savage.
I love how you choose to leave in a blizzard!! There’s some awesome map knowledge for ya! Not great for the rest of us who don’t know what way you are going. But still, love these vids!
For someone who titled his opening video of this run "every decision matters", he uses the phrase "it doesn't really matter" an aweful lot throughout these videos 😂
Found your channel recently and the last week It's all I'd watch basically x) Really enjoy having your long videos on while I'm doing other stuff at my desk :))
Thanks for your videos, Zak, learned to survive on Interloper from them.
Was waiting in baited breath for this video, have been for every video
as you were explaining the difference between Astrid and Will concerning pain, I was thinking...don't women tend to have a higher pain tolerance, like for enduring childbirth? if so, then that's why Astrid might not suffer so much. the devs may or may not have implemented that subtle detail on purpose. 🤔
great episode as always! stay safe and take care.
Thats true and possibly intentional, yes. Good point.
If men could give birth, then I think we’d have the accurate data to know which sex could tolerate pain better.
@@dallashill23 we dont need to - just compare men vs women who have not given birth.
And woman voice is medicine for the soul.
@@Боб_Рок only when they're not screaming at you for something you didn't do wrong, or asking for more money that you don't have. 😆 oh, and when she tells you your mother-in-law is coming over for a visit. those times you wish she would just keep her mouth shut. but then...🤔...I guess you WOULD need to know when she's coming over in advance to prepare for it mentally and emotionally, just like when soldiers are about to be shelled and someone screams "INCOMING!" 😆 and I'm sure there are some veterans who would rather go back into the trenches then have to put up with their mother-in-law. 😁
I just started a new Voyager run, spawned in Ash Canyon and basically did that very same path, and you did it better on Misery then I did on Voyager lol.
that's me too, I died quiet fast 😅
butI play on xbox and that seems to be more tricky ...
Grunting 😂hahahaha. We use that as a slang over here sometimes. But yes Will’s grunting is like nails on a chalkboard. I can’t play his character anymore.
Love this series, I waited eagerly for this episode!
The fact you weren’t swarmed by wolves when you smelled is insane
8:25 zak talking about birch bark locations for a full minute reminds me of Bubba explaining shrimp dishes in Forrest Gump
Hi, Zak. I'm trying to choose the best base for misery. From my point of view it should be somewhere near cave, with fishing spot nearby, with coal cave and workbench. I think about Pleasant Walley or ML i really want place with beachcoming as well but I'm concerned that CH doesn't have caves and DP doesn't have fishing hut. What do you think what be the best option and if you have some advices they're really welcome!
I think I stand with what I said in this one: Camp Office. But Mountaineers Hut is also good.
As I've been playing for years, I did not start using much of the cooking mecanics that they implied a few years ago. I do also only carry a pot + can in my runs and usually leave oil and flour wherever I find it.
Seeing how powerful some pies are in early game, specialy the ones that restore fatigue, I might change my way of playing and go skillet + pot and cook a bit in early game. Then later, go back to my old and trusted popt + can.
At the summit, you just trade sleep for feather with pies, which seems very very smart.
Hello survivors and Zak, I wonder what if devs implement a change where in choosing character does matter. Astrid is more agile (more walking and running speed) and sneaky but less strong (affecting carrying capacity and wolf struggles). Will is not so sneaky but is strong. this is just a rough idea/suggestion. More traits can be worked upon
Intro music is so on point.. touches my soul
I knew it would be the summit
Nice video
“Here we goat” hahahahahahahahahaha
Of course... A new Episode when im Literally Unable to watch it because my eyes are so Bloated and In pain and Theres a possibility ill hsve my left eye Amputate. Love the Timing zak :'D
I hope all will be well for you!
Nice video👍🏾
Its great that you have a lot of salt. Broth will be amazing in the late game for those warming up bonuses.
Just remember that broth gives stink level even of it wont drop as decoy
Hey, what can I say, you did actually use the salt at the summit 😂
Will really grants a lot (and this goes on my nerves) but I have the feeling, Astrid is a bit more sweary than she used to be - but it easier bear for sure (pun intended)
On cocking lvl 3 you dont lose kalories when you smash open the cans. Saves alot of weight. 🙂
As far as momento caches on loper (not sure about misery yet), I feel like the broken railroad cach with cured saplings is pretty strong.
29:30 🍄(I would use the one on Discord but I think you need to have TH-cam memberships turned on to add custom emojis)
Hello Zak , im following you for a while now and im really enjoying your content . I dont know if you realise but i want to share a bedroll spot i got across to in winding river when you get out of from the dam with one wayed door , on downstairs there is 3 pipes which put one on another . I found my bedroll right inside of that pipe in my misery run you should check for that spot when you are vrossing winding river
Thanks for the heads up - I have already gone past there for Part 4, but good to know :)
I'm not clear on the value of the DLC recipes that don't provide buffs. Do you gain calories by cooking ptarmigan meat into broth? My inclination would be to just eat the meat. Same with maple syrup and pancakes.
You mainly want the buffs, not the calories
With the additional regions have they added more skill books or just spread out the existing ones? Wondering because you couldn't get level 5 in all skills in interloper difficulty as there weren't enough books.
Should be more books so could be possible
why does it take 160mins to pluck a ptarmigan? 🤣
Im still on my day first on Misery, but still cant persuade myself to continue, because i still on my road to 500 days on my interloper and 1000 days on stalker haha. However, i guess i can survive until Broken body in Misery.
Great video as always...
PS. Im i drunk or i see 70 days for Misery on 1:16.😂
His 70 days was during his play testing of the misery mode, he said previous video that he used mods to skip days to test things he wanted to do.
Oh yes, i remember now that he talking about that. I know now saw in one of his video.
Yeheyyyyyyy❤
15:09 Since when is there wind in caves?
Hm yeah thats weird. Probably a bug
Pies lower your fatigue Zak ;)
Not rosehip or peach pies. Well, they raise the fatigue meter but lower fatigue - I guess its kinda confusing now that I think about it haha
Doin' well.
Why is carrying 0.75 kilograms of salt if he says he doesn't need it? 😂 (but at the same time drops a piece of charcoal that weighs like 0.1 kilograms?)
I love your voice
why you don't check the other plane crash?
It was out of the way and I didnt need much from there
Fatigue half full or half empty depending on who you are haha
Is it me or is there a slight difference in line delivery, like this sounds a bit more serious than usual and emphasizes the cruelty of this challenge?
Sounds the same to me

In my misery playthrough I am losing no calories from smashing open cans. I am not sure if it makes a difference but I am cooking level 3 I think. Still lose the can but I am getting the full amount of the food.
Thats intentional
