I was in that part of the UK a few years ago and finally tried a Parmo. Incredible. And the employees were floored that a dude from California knew of it and had searched it out.
I'd say burgers are burgers here. Otherwise its a sandwich. (never heard it otherwise in 44 years - maybe its a London thing?). There IS a weird thing with chicken breast though (and thats due to KFC, certain restrictions and marketing). Bacon on a round shaped bun, bap or barm cake (etc) is a sandwich (or in many cases you might hear butty). As to Parmos I think they actually took off as a national thought via Blackpool (having been popular there for a long time too - and with it being a holiday and hen/stag do destination). Didn't know we had them in York now. Doesn't surprise me though! XD
