I know in Dragon Ball Online he creates treatises about ki an ki control. What we are seeing here, right now, or could have seen if this continues after Toriyama's passing is the beginnings of the Beast Sage.
Gohan is also arguably a child soldier. I know his Saiyan half may not care, but his human half probably does. He may not want to go back to the extremes of fighting a powered up cell or whatever. Also, Vegeta and Goku love this type of stuff so most of the time Gohan only really has to do support. Also also, Gohan doesn't have instant transmission so he's have to fly to the lookout to train and that would be a few hours a day to do. Spend like half of your day training, an activity that Gohan is okay with but doesn't love like Goku, or study, and activity that he actually enjoys and doesn't end up with him nearly killed. While Gohan should train to protect the earth and not fall behind too much, I also agree that to Gohan the Super Sai-ants seem like nicer to study and be around.
And while he was doing his research, he was still training. He didn't learn the SBC out of nowhere. Gohan has learned how to have stability, and that's all he wanted in the first place.

You know it’d be awesome if this is foreshadowing Gohan using his studies to figure out something about Saipan transformations that brings him to a new level of power. Like a level beyond beast. It would justify his “not training for years to focus on research” if it actually had a hugely relevant impact later in the story
Considerably beast is supposed to be an evolution of his mystic form, he’s consistently reached new forms past the cell saga despite his dissolution of transitioning into the main character during that time. Within the manga, whis mentions his beast form is not either of a diety energy nor a saiyan one but one of its own entirely. Respectably it can be referred to as the super saiyan form of mystic gohan almost. Though it’s not directly referred to as such it’s almost clearly an example of it considering in chapter 103 he was able to stand toe to toe with goku as well as a controlled state broly.
Not quite on the same level, but in the Xenoverse timeline it's explicitly stated that Gohan writing a book about ki control is what causes it to become commonplace to humans about a 100 years later. In a sense he makes it so humanity can fend for themselves eventually.

From an external narrative writing perspective, yes it is forever a pity how Gohan gets sidelined and the series just becomes The Goku Power Hour. From an internal world perspective though, it's wonderful that he just gets to live the life he always wanted. He may have had the heart of a hero, but he never wanted to be a fighter, only a scholar And now he gets to live his dream and be happy.

I’m in my Gohan stage rn. Studying and putting training off to the wayside. Familiar weights are heavier than before but my latent potential remains infinite. To be unlocked later in my adult life
Piccolo was always my favorite character. I see him as the father I strive to be and the father I wish mine was, I didn't have a great relationship with my father when I was younger. There was a year he straight up disappeared from my life, during that time I would watch a lot of movies and a lot of Dragon Ball to distract myself from the worries of the world. When Piccolo sacrificed himself for Gohan I realized he wasn't just a mean guy to Gohan, he was someone who pushed him to his limit, someone who encouraged him to do better because he knew he could (and because he needed to). But he was also someone who learned to love and care through Gohan, so much so that he sacrificed himself for him. I always saw that as the way a father should be, somebody who is tough when needed, but loving when needed as well. Somebody who's best interest always lays with the protection of their loved ones, in this case Gohan and Pan who Piccolo obviously sees like a son and granddaughter. That's why Piccolo is my favorite.

Put you also hinted at the possibility of gaining power without just “push ups, sit ups and plenty of juice” but perhaps with knowledge. 2 hours in the time chamber every day is literally all it would take for Gohan to maintain himself. There's literally no excuse.
Gohan is also arguably a child soldier. I know his Saiyan half may not care, but his human half probably does. He may not want to go back to the extremes of fighting a powered up cell or whatever.
Also, Vegeta and Goku love this type of stuff so most of the time Gohan only really has to do support. Also also, Gohan doesn't have instant transmission so he's have to fly to the lookout to train and that would be a few hours a day to do. Spend like half of your day training, an activity that Gohan is okay with but doesn't love like Goku, or study, and activity that he actually enjoys and doesn't end up with him nearly killed.
While Gohan should train to protect the earth and not fall behind too much, I also agree that to Gohan the Super Sai-ants seem like nicer to study and be around.

You know it’d be awesome if this is foreshadowing Gohan using his studies to figure out something about Saipan transformations that brings him to a new level of power. Like a level beyond beast. It would justify his “not training for years to focus on research” if it actually had a hugely relevant impact later in the story
Considerably beast is supposed to be an evolution of his mystic form, he’s consistently reached new forms past the cell saga despite his dissolution of transitioning into the main character during that time. Within the manga, whis mentions his beast form is not either of a diety energy nor a saiyan one but one of its own entirely. Respectably it can be referred to as the super saiyan form of mystic gohan almost. Though it’s not directly referred to as such it’s almost clearly an example of it considering in chapter 103 he was able to stand toe to toe with goku as well as a controlled state broly.
Not quite on the same level, but in the Xenoverse timeline it's explicitly stated that Gohan writing a book about ki control is what causes it to become commonplace to humans about a 100 years later. In a sense he makes it so humanity can fend for themselves eventually.

From an external narrative writing perspective, yes it is forever a pity how Gohan gets sidelined and the series just becomes The Goku Power Hour.

Piccolo was always my favorite character. I see him as the father I strive to be and the father I wish mine was, I didn't have a great relationship with my father when I was younger. There was a year he straight up disappeared from my life, during that time I would watch a lot of movies and a lot of Dragon Ball to distract myself from the worries of the world. When Piccolo sacrificed himself for Gohan I realized he wasn't just a mean guy to Gohan, he was someone who pushed him to his limit, someone who encouraged him to do better because he knew he could (and because he needed to). But he was also someone who learned to love and care through Gohan, so much so that he sacrificed himself for him. I always saw that as the way a father should be, somebody who is tough when needed, but loving when needed as well. Somebody who's best interest always lays with the protection of their loved ones, in this case Gohan and Pan who Piccolo obviously sees like a son and granddaughter. That's why Piccolo is my favorite.
