    #DidYouKnow: Static friction is when an object is held stationary against another and neither moves with respect to each other. A certain minimum tangential (lateral) force is required to budge them, and then they start moving in relation to one another. For example, Papers on a tabletop. We count on them not falling off. However, sufficient wind force or earthquake vibrations can dislodge the papers and other objects, overcoming the static friction force.

      Static means rest and static friction means 2 objects that are in contact but they are not moving . They are at rest . Like a table on floor or book on a table are example of static friction because the 2 objects are in contact with each other but they are not moving

    Can't we just say that the sofa has higher inertia . Hence we are applying more force?

    • @it5942
      @it5942 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a bit different. All objects exert gravity on each other, not just the Earth. This should cause objects to move towards each other and not just the Earth. One reason this doesn't happen is because the force of gravity is so weak. Still, they should move at least a little. The reason they don't move at all is due to static friction.
      Essentially inertia effects the objects acceleration. Higher inertia results on slower acceleration. Static friction prevents objects from moving at all.
