You just kept talking and I need to get some things done but I couldn’t shut this video off. What an interesting and informative presentation. Great job!! I just logged 29 acres last winter and in on season the regroth has been phenomenal. I can agree with everything you said! I can’t wait for this winter to get back to work in the woods. Thanks for sharing your story.
Another great video packed with outstanding information! I just wish this video had come out about a year ago before I logged my property-would’ve saved me a lot of guesswork! My only complaint? You and Jake don’t put out enough content! Keep up the awesome work!
In my familys’ property in Mississippi, our neighbor did a clear cut into our property thinking it was his. Three years later, we have a great cutover that is great for deer bedding and just yesterday I harvested my first deer just on the outside of that cutover. Will be doing much more habitat management. Definitely subscribing, Thanks for the advice!!
Great info Randy! I purchased my land 4 years ago and by cutting trees and making corridors I have gone from seeing very few deer to usually having deer all around me. This year in one day I had 7 different decent bucks (for my area 2,5 years is decent) on my cameras all on 40 acres
I clear cut 25ac, it was closed canopy white pine. What has regrown are red oak and black cherry and bunches of switchgrass. The amount of browse is more than I ever would’ve imagined. The bedding created by the switchgrass has been great. Thanks for the tips to have this area cut hard, Randy.
After 3 years of small habitat improvements on my 40 acres in NC, I landed a huge 8 point that I’m getting mounted. He was the 5th mountable 8 point I’ve seen after 4 hunts this year. (The others were during bow season and I didn’t have a clean shot) Overall I saw 38 deer and passed on around 25 that I could have easily shot while the others weren’t in a position to shoot. Small improvements go a long ways, especially when creating pinch points. Big learning for me this year, don’t slack on cutting shooting lanes like I did. I was lucky to get a 5th chance.
Tree harvest can be scary but once you do it, you are more comfortable. I had 750 trees cut the first time, after 5 years it really didn’t do what I wanted, not enough open canopy. I had them come back and cut everything 14” and up, another 750 trees. It takes more than you think. Now I have some stuff regrowing. Making a big difference. Can’t wait for 2-3 more years.
How many acres roughly? Trying to gauge for my property .. I’m only working with 20 acres ; joins up to 400 though, all of which has ZERO hunters as of today lol… working on permissions now; I have 20 acres of field on the south end but mine is long and narrow but acts as a sever cut thru from where they sleep to where they eat.. Nice video Randy. Foresters and farmers have the same troubled, contradictory nd complementary, complex relationship with deer managers. I’ve been tempted to plant them in something like clover. To just have more food on my place . But been hesitant to
I select cut about 5 years ago. I got raspberries and grasses growing, but the deer like grazing off the small brush that's trying to grow. The does are living on my property, but bucks are gone by rifle season. I have good bucks from late October to mid-november. I'm adding mature conifers this year (5 - 6 foot tall) to accelerate the process. Also adding switch grass. I don't have years to wait so I need an accelerated plan. My neighbor just clear cut 22 acres of his 40. My other neighbor's 40 is so mature you can see straight through it, so he's not holding any deer. Hire a reputable timber company. I had success with one. Another guy came in and cut wood and disappeared without paying me for it. Be careful. I'm also going to till some areas in the timber to get the seed bank going. I have 3 food plots and the deer still keep them mown down like a putting green. Need more browse. Looking forward to the land management plan this year.

Randy what are your thoughts on bush honeysuckle here is Michigan. I am overrun with it. It looks thick from the outside but once in it it’s all canopy and no forage grows under it. I am tempted to wipe out some pockets of it to see what the sun will bring back.
If you wipe out pockets, it will grow back if the stumps are not treated. How much you wipe out depends on how much other bedding cover you have. You may want to leave some standing until you can establish other areas of bedding cover.

why hinge cut when you can take young trees and bend them to grow along the side so they never die? The idea that deer like shitty woods is not lost on me . hunt public forest and you find out quick the deer do not like WOLVES and they are not going into any area that could corner them if wolves show up . Hinge cut properties are properties that are not wolf laden . If you hinge cut northern WI right now you will never see a deer near that unless you are on property you can control the wolf from entering. Wolves use hing cut areas to herd deer and kill them in mass if you do not have open spaces for the deer to get away . I watch wolves wipe out a herd of 63 (we found all 63 skulls) deer this fall because the guy took advice and hinge cut his property and the deer kept getting caught in spaces they could not get away from the wolves. YES the hinging brought the deer and held them but it also drew the wolves as never before and ruined the entire property for hunting because of that . Until we can kill the wolf OFF again we should not be setting up diners for the damn things to eat cheap! If you have a want for more deer then stop letting people who advocate for Wolves! This would do so much more than any modification of a woods. There is a huge amount of teaching about other things besides how great these cuttings help deer in the southern regions of the country and no teaching going on about the risks with predation. The wolf is the enemy of deer habitat. Never forget that.
Instead of hinge cutting why not fell large trees and set them up on 1' lifts then core sections of the tree fill with soil and plant living plants that deer eat ? Same effect and you have a constant food plot coming out of the fallen trees for at least 2 decades and you get the crossing cover you are seeking in felled trees . Deer do not care if it looks natural to use it. They will bed in junk yards between rows of cars if it is near food and other cover. They do not care that junk cars are not trees . They still do the same job. Hinge cutting your property seems like a lazy (at least the easiest ) way of doing bedding area and increasing the chance of forest fires and wolf slaughter zones. I have mixed feelings about this practice and think it is getting way overused without developing better more sustainable methods to make better deer bedding zones . Clear cutting spots is obviously smart and so is selective harvesting . Hinging is so dumb to me . Push the trees over so you get roots that are up in the air . You create even more pockets and the tree lives about the same if not longer than a hinge cut tree. Deer and all animals love exposed roots that hinging does not help . There has to be a more effective way to built cover deer bed in. Whether is adding a specific plant type to your property that naturally produces bedding plants and trees or if you get horizontal blockage through more permanent means like mound building with train rail wood being dropped into areas in piles . you can get the same effect from other methods but this has caught fire and no one is looking for alternatives. Seems like a mistake .

Seems like a mistake .
forester takes cut of the profit not worth it
