I just got my DS61 late last week. I purchased it without trying it out or even seeing any youtube vids of it. Videos like this one didn't exist when I made my pre-order purchase.
I have to say that I am pretty floored with this keyboard for the money I spent. The sounds are fantastic, the abilities this thing has in performance mode are pretty much endless.
I wish it had a bit more sampling capacity but for sampled song intros I can just use the audio function that plays mp3 files directly from the USB stick. A press of an MPC pad instantly plays the mp3 file so you can use the MPC's as sample triggers that way in groups of 8 samples at a time. Just read the manual and understand how to build the file system on your USB stick and it's a breeze.
The key bed on the DS61 seems a little shorter in depth and shallow on the key press but I got used to rather quickly.

+2012nimrod You use the import function from the USB Stick. The user manual explains how your file system on the USB stick should be setup in order for the import function to recognize where your files are. I use 44.1 / 16bit PCM .wav files as my import files that I have already edited the start and end points in using another piece of software. Preparing your samples ahead of time like that will save a lot of time and result in your sample working the way you expect it to on key press.
You can set the default key for the sample as well. In my case I like to use the lower register of my keyboard for samples.
There is no multi-sample function that I have found as of yet but I found a neat little trick that I use. If I need 3 separate samples in one song I set the first one to default key of C1, the second sample to C#1, the third to D1 and create 3 separate samples.
Then in performance mode you can split, layer the keyboard and assign key ranges.
I only assign sample one to C1, sample two to C#1 and sample three to D1. That still leaves me five channels to layer or split up the rest of the keyboard.

I haven't had a chance to try the Korg m50 yet. The keybed on Juno DS feels like it has a slightly 'shorter' throw to it. The key press doesn't feel as deep as say my Triton Pro does. It just takes little getting used to but since I use the DS for mostly synth sounds live anyway it's really no big deal.
It's not an ideal keybed for more expressive piano 'concerto' style pieces. ;-)
+Bill Blanchard have you played the moX6 and Moxf6 ? somenthing like that? or like a Casio keys jajajaja............i just want to know.....because..........most of the new era 61 mid price keyboards have a casio touch and noisy keys.

This dude has demo’d for years, he’s there even on Roland’s RD100 demo or somethin, which is around 1999
these here are mostly the... cheapest sounding DS presets one could demonstrate, But the machine is a beast, Just listen to the atmos etc pads/ Best Roland pads after JD- 800.. / Filters , internal effects and Piano action are great too. A great buy

to transform pattern sequencer to a real linjär play recorder, just change beat from 4/4 to 32/2 and it give 4 min of real play recording. if change pattern lenght to 8 measure. great!

PS does anyone else wish Roland would make some instructional videos, ie that take you through some of these things step by step? I might even pay a nominal fee.....frankly it looks like so much to figure out, esp the more technical aspects, and operator manuals typically suck

so to exsplain if the juno ds/juno di [ though di needs software editor] the others dont. /juno stage are programed correctly, not using the ring modulator effect ie as a typicle 4 occerlater synth all these roland synths can all operate as a full 64 multitimbral synth not just 16 parts with any split/layer posistioning if only requiring 1 partial per sound, which for me is easyly enough as the single partial sounds, sound so good, which most people are un aware of. useing the [4] partial per patch funtion. even the ax-1 shoulder synth has this partial function can be used this way as a 4 way multitibral synth not as comanuarly advertised, all the exsplanations are in the keyboard forum link. these roland synths are simply amazing. note the partials are saved in the patch locations while the parts are saved in the parts locations why is this information not readerly avaible either OBVIOSLY in the manual or the youtube vedios, i had to work it all out my self, 1st thing i did was spliting partials into bass and organ splits with out having to use the part funftion as i wanted to save my parts locations, so i kow it can be done as i did it, i only needed 1 organ and 2 bass sounds, a slap and a sine wave to give extra depth, i always do that with my bass sounds, split apropiatly in the partial l split mode. note the new jupitor 80 only has 3 partials but then againg 10 parts, = other layering functions giving you i believe 10 layers. but i personaly have no use of the new "hip hop" pad functions of the new ds i only play live and am blown away why they didnt just leave the original funtions of the original di as they were, as there great funtions for learning/ checking though songs when your practising at a rehearsal.or the new axial fuctions they simply take up extra patch space which i would rarther use for my own patches. cheers

Just bought this keyboard a few minutes ago from Guitar Center and awaiting delivery. I had been gigging previously with a 61 key Juno D which was stolen a couple days ago by some degenerate I'm still trying to track down. Not even one of the best around but weighed only 10 lbs, had some decent sounds, and I had an original backpack Juno gig case for it. As far as lite keys go (no car right now so I'm lugging keys and amp on buses and trains) I was really considering the Korg X50 or Korg Kross, Juno Di, Yamaha MX6. On a tight budget right now so these are pretty much within my budget. I got a deal on the DS61 so I decided to try it out, I've got 45 days to send it back if I don't like it. What do u guys think? Once again, I need to travel light, about 10 lbs max, maybe an extra 1 or 2 lbs, give or take....

2 questions:
1: How is the feeling of this keybed compared to RD pianos?
Is it light as semi weighted keys or is is a bit heavy?
2: Does the mic input only have robot voices and such or does it have other vocal effects such as reverb/echo?
WoW Scott that really was very good indeed mate :-) I especially was blown away with the capabilities of this synth, but when you played that tune at 2:16 that was pretty cool playing and I never realised that the Juno DS was such a capable machine :-) what was that tune that you were playing called anyway ?? and for the price, I looked it up and was pretty surprised, I would say that this must be on par with a Korg Krome, and it sounded pretty damned good mate :-) aside of the Moog sounds at 1:06, I also loved the pianos, and the guitars too

So nice...I'm selling my very nice Fender guitar amp, so I can buy a synth. I had thought I knew which one I wanted, but I've figured out (as of a few hours ago) that I shouldn't jump on the one most like my first. This one sure seems like a candidate. I just need to have a price I can deal with. An Odyssey still tempts me greatly.
Are the keys heavy or medium or light? Can someone describe me the keys feel? It would be nice.
I played one of these, only once. If my memory serves me right, they were medium. Satisfying medium, with a much more organic feel than I expected.

It's really a good keyboard... The best piano sound for solo are the one intern the Juno Ds. The fewest on the exp are fine in a mix ... (Sounds a little bit upright) this board is excellent for playing in a cover band (not only ) ... And studio as well ! I'm waiting for a supernatural piano sound in a new EXP ? Is this possible? And a software update for the phrases that you can arrange different phrases to a complete song (8 phrases/song) ... Roland?

Depends, one the hip hop, but this is a West coast "rap" beat. Hip Hop is about culture and knowledge and is normally accompanied by a jazz beat of some off time stuff.

NEED Advice!!!
I am at beginner level and I am little confused about buying the basic digital Piano or a synthesizer (workstation) with a weighted keyboard. I have read and investigated for last couple of months on different websites in this matter. For the Basic Piano I have option of buying Roland FP-30, Kawai ES110 & Yamaha P125. And for the Synthesizer I have option of Roland Juno DS88. Now Juno DS 88 has weighted keys with many other options. I was wondering which one should be my choice since I will not be able to buy another keyboard at least for next 10 years to constrain of finance. So I need to make a decision now keeping in mind this keyboard is going to assist me for my musical learning and exploration.
Though I am a beginner is it better to have a range of extra sounds (which is available in the mentioned synthesizer) to keep myself encouraged more? And will it be useful too to have DS88 over the DP, for those extra features, if I am not going to upgrade my DP/Keyboard?
Roland Juno DS88 (keyboard) has the weighted Key action with ivory feel G and the Roland FP-30 (DP) has PHA IV where the latter is superior but will it be very different that I will have much lesser advantage with DS88 for the keyboard action while learning piano?
If you suggest the DPs over the DS88 in that case which one would you prefer more amongst P125, FP-30 and ES110?
I found something new about these DP/Keyboards that they have their certain longevity…will you please clarify that these DPs will have more or same kind of longevity over DS88 or the same?
I know I have asked you many questions, But if you answer, it will enable to make up my mind and take a decision without further delay in purchasing.

Nice board overall, but if you're looking for decent B3 with Leslie happening, look elsewhere. Pianos and so much more on this are great and don't understand why Roland can't come up with better organ sounds.

Not sure how to find a clear answer on this, but I'm in a band that plays 30+ song gigs and am mainly looking for the ability to easily bank sounds before a gig so I can switch to the next one on the fly at the gig - up to around 30 sounds. It says on " user memory patches: 256" on Thomann, is this referring to the ability to do that?
The Roland RD-800 would be a great option for you. With the live sets.

I wish someone had answered your question. I'm in the same boat. I think you can save 10 "favorites" in the 0-9 buttons, but most gigs have more than 10 songs!

I've just tried both of them yesterday and the DS-88 has sliiiiiiightly lighter action than the FA-08, but it's barely noticeable

does this have more synth than the roland fa series? it seems so....the Fa seems more based on real instruments this kinda has that magic i like in a keyboard
FA is skewed towards electronic as well. Its synth engine seems to have the same parameters as the Juno, and all the same synth sounds in addition to more lazily named "Hard Lead 1, Hard Lead 2", etc.

yes, but go easy on the pads, their circuit board underneath is not physically reinforced like the pads of controllers like the M-Audio Axiom

You'll have to preview the sounds to see which you like best. The older Roland keys have sounds designed by Eric Persing of Omnisynth fame. There's a lot more recognizable sounds from the older synths.
ADVICE PLEASE!!!
Need a stage piano for gigging funk/soul and would like something new to play around with aside from that. Budget is pretty much the price of this. Is the fact that this is a synth rather than digital piano a problem? Does anyone know if this is my best option. Thanks in advance

"Synthesizer" means "synthesis". All I hear here is an automatic accompaniment keyboard.

DS has the same 'synthesis' engine as Fantom S/X. Technically it's PCM synth engine, not real synthesizer, but you can change preset sounds significantly. And it doesn't have automatic accompaniment. What you hear in video is sequenced/preset patterns.

Scott Tibbs is a great performer; however you need to start having more modern performers to play more modern styles of music. People aren’t going to be impressed when they hear a performer play the same songs on every instrument they pick up. This is a newer synth so it requires a younger person that knows newer styles to play on it. What is your target audience?

Bah....can the voices be edited in any way? Combined? It seems like either the synth is far too complicated with wave patches that go 16 layers deep. (Editing and tweaking 1/16th of a performance at a time gets a little time-consuming.) Or they don't offer any way to modify, edit, or mix voices. I miss the Roland D-50.
