As someone of a rather liberal persuasion I nevertheless cannot recall any other two leaders of state together in the same room with equal powers of eloquence and persuasion as these two statesmen.
With Trudope in office, Canada has been relegated to eating at the kids' table. Back in the '80s and early '90s, Canada (Mulroney), the U.S. (Reagan, Bush Sr.), and the U.K. (Thatcher) were a tripod. We consulted each other on geopolitical matters such as Gadhafi and Saddam, and none of us (especially Canada) was afraid to dip our hands in the proverbial 'bucket of blood' when necessary.

As far as canada us relations go, while the relationship between mulroney and raegan was solid, us canada relations fared ok under chretien and clinton as well!
Timeline 4:46 I'd imagine President Regan meant well, but we don't have a Queen of Canada. We have a Canadian Constitution. Finally settled over many decades.and enshrined as law of the land, 7 years before this dinner.
You need to read up on Canada's constitution. The monarchs official title in Canada, is the Queen of Canada, (now the King of Canada), totally seperate constituonal title than their English title.
The United Kingdom and canada are joined in a personal union. That is they share the same individual person as same head of state while at the same time both being fully independant countries. The government of the UK has no power over the Government of canada and vice versa, The United Kingdom used to control Canada's foreign policy but that was done away with many years ago.
I respect Reagan, but Mulroney doesn't have one tenth of his integrity. Unlike Reagan, who was consistent in his views, Mulroney turned. He was originally against NAFTA, before signing it. And he pretended to be a friend of east and west, only to be an eastern pawn.
Yet Mulroney had enough adults in the room to push him into NAFTA, and enough of them were around in Chrétien’s cabinet as well to keep him on it. I wish Mulroney could have had the same guidance on spending. Just barely enough were around for Obama to prevent him from leaving it, and one of them was Stephen Harper. But they’re all gone now, as we have seen with the gruesome group of Trudeau/Trump/Brandon. Like the brilliant poet Remy said, “free trade is like a magic wand/Takes what you make, turns it into what you want”.

@@broadstreet21 Your original comment about Mulroney originally being against NAFTA before signing it, is misleading. Mulroney ran an election campaign predominantly on the issue of free trade and won a majority government, and then implemented NAFTA. Your comment refers to Mulroney’s 1976 PC leadership bid, where he stood with his party on the issue of free trade. Mulroney did a lot for the west: The Western Accord of 1985 killed the National Energy Program brought in by Liberals, that tried to bring oil prices under federal control, installed a state-owned oil company, and made every effort to divert the industry out of Alberta to Canada Lands. Mulroney dismantled the Foreign Investment Review Board, which hindered the flow of capital into the West. Mulroney privatized 23 crown corporations. Including Air Canada, Petro Canada, and Canadair. Mulroney introduced the largest income tax reform in our history. I don’t get the hatred Mulroney received from the West.
Funny how people have a short memory. Look back at the scandals he was involved in while he was Prime Minister. People look back fondly at the past but forget the realities of the past. Yes he did some good things as well but his death does not erase his misdeeds.
Such class on both sides, and true friendship
RIP to a great man, a Mr. Brian Mulroney
AYE LADDIE!
He would have stood -up to the carnage in GAZA.

It was a time when we were united
Beautiful speech by Mulroney...he delivers it almost like a priest delivers a homily.

WONDERFUL! LEADERS RESPECTING EACH OTHER AND BOTH COUNTRIES
Back when we were friends. Today, with Dunp and Trudope, things have changed.
Mulroney had class as did Reagan.

Damn, the guy knew how to give a speech.
🙏Ronald Reagan, former president of USA & Brian Mulroney, Former Prime Minister of Canada 🇨🇦
those were the days...
True Leadership. It’s not there today in politics. Too bad for us, we the people.
Back in the day when leaders actually wrote their own speeches.

Or better yet, just search Wikipedia for "King of Canada".

So you respect people who are uncompromising and not those who are willing to consider an issue that challenges their own opinion.

He is not honourable. In fact he is a liar and a thief.
Mulroney was the best Canadian PM of the modern era.

This can be said for any decade.
I seriously doubt you could accurately depict any scandal or misdeed that you are referring too.
